शिवाजी महाराज ने एक पत्र में लिखा था—‘‘स्वयं भगवान् के ही मन में है कि हिंदवी-स्वराज्य निर्मित हो।’’ उस युवा वीरपुरुष ने क्रांतियुद्ध की पहल की। शिवाजी महाराज ने शालिवाहन संवत् 156७ (ई.स. 16४5) में अपने एक साथी के पास भेजे हुए पत्र में—स्वयं पर लगे इस आरोप का निषेध किया कि बीजापुर के शाह का प्रतिरोध कर उन्होंने राजद्रोह का पाप किया है। उन्होंने इस बात का स्मरण कराते हुए उच्च आदर्शों की भावना भी जाग्रत् की कि अपना एकनिष्ठ बंधन यदि किसी से है तो वह भगवान् से है, न कि किसी शाह- बादशाह से। उन्होंने उस पत्र में लिखा है— ‘‘आचार्य दादाजी कोंडदेव और अपने साथियों के साथ सह्याद्रि पर्वत के शृंग पर ईश्वर को साक्षी मानकर लक्ष्य प्राप्ति तक लड़ाई जारी रखने और हिंदुस्थान में ‘हिंदवी-स्वराज्य’ यानी हिंदू-पदपादशाही स्थापित करने की क्या आपने शपथ नहीं ली थी? स्वयं ईश्वर ने हमें यह यश प्रदान किया है और हिंदवी-स्वराज्य के निर्माण के रूप में वह हमारी मनीषा पूरी करनेवाला है। स्वयं भगवान् के ही मन में है कि यह राज्य प्रस्थापित हो।’’ शिवाजी महाराज की कलम से उतरे ‘हिंदवी-स्वराज’—इस शब्द मात्र से एक शताब्दी से भी अधिक समय तक जिस बेचैनी से महाराष्ट्र का जीवन तथा कर्तव्य निर्देशित हुआ और उसका आत्मस्वरूप जिस तरह से प्रकट हुआ, वैसा किसी अन्य से संभव नहीं था। मराठों की लड़ाई आरंभ से ही वैयक्तिक या विशिष्ट वर्ग की सीमित लड़ाई नहीं थी। हिंदूधर्म की रक्षा हेतु, विदेशी मुसलिम सत्ता का नामोनिशान मिटाने के लिए तथा स्वतंत्र और समर्थ हिंदवी-स्वराज्य स्थापित करने के लिए लड़ी गई वह संपूर्ण लड़ाई हिंदू लड़ाई थी।

वीर सावरकर रचित ‘१८५७ का स्वातंत्र्य समर’ विश्व की पहली इतिहास पुस्तक है, जिसे प्रकाशन के पूर्व ही प्रतिबंधित होने का गौरव प्राप्त हुआ। इस पुस्तक को ही यह गौरव प्राप्त है कि सन् १९०९ में इसके प्रथम गुप्त संस्करण के प्रकाशन से १९४७ में इसके प्रथम खुले प्रकाशन तक के अड़तीस वर्ष लंबे कालखंड में इसके कितने ही गुप्त संस्करण अनेक भाषाओं में छपकर देश-विदेश में वितरित होते रहे। इस पुस्तक को छिपाकर भारत में लाना एक साहसपूर्ण क्रांति-कर्म बन गया। यह देशभक्त क्रांतिकारियों की ‘गीता’ बन गई। इसकी अलभ्य प्रति को कहीं से खोज पाना सौभाग्य माना जाता था। इसकी एक-एक प्रति गुप्त रूप से एक हाथ से दूसरे हाथ होती हुई अनेक अंतःकरणों में क्रांति की ज्वाला सुलगा जाती थी। पुस्तक के लेखन से पूर्व सावरकर के मन में अनेक प्रश्न थे—सन् १८५७ का यथार्थ क्या है?क्या वह मात्र एक आकस्मिक सिपाही विद्रोह था? क्या उसके नेता अपने तुच्छ स्वार्थों की रक्षा के लिए अलग-अलग इस विद्रोह में कूद पड़े थे, या वे किसी बड़े लक्ष्य की प्राप्ति के लिए एक सुनियोजित प्रयास था? यदि हाँ, तो उस योजना में किस-किसका मस्तिष्क कार्य कर रहा था?योजना का स्वरूप क्या था?क्या सन् १८५७ एक बीता हुआ बंद अध्याय है या भविष्य के लिए प्रेरणादायी जीवंत यात्रा?भारत की भावी पीढि़यों के लिए १८५७ का संदेश क्या है? आदि-आदि। और उन्हीं ज्वलंत प्रश्नों की परिणति है प्रस्तुत ग्रंथ—‘१८५७ का स्वातंत्र्य समर’! इसमें तत्कालीन संपूर्ण भारत की सामाजिक व राजनीतिक स्थिति के वर्णन के साथ ही हाहाकार मचा देनेवाले रण-तांडव का भी सिलसिलेवार, हृदय-द्रावक व सप्रमाण वर्णन है। प्रत्येक देशभक्त भारतीय हेतु पठनीय व संग्रहणीय, अलभ्य कृति!

नहीं-नहीं, राष्‍ट्र कभी मरते नहीं । ईश्‍वर पीड़ितों का रक्षक है । उसने मनुष्य को स्वाधीनता में साँस लेने के लिए उत्पन्न किया है । यदि तुम ठान लो तो समझो, देश स्वतंत्र हो ही गया । इससे अधिक प्रोत्साहक राष्‍ट्रमंत्र अन्य कौन सा है? एक बार मनुष्य ने ठान लिया कि मैं स्वाधीनता, स्वदेश और मानवता का परम भक्‍त हूँ फिर उसे स्वाधीनता, स्वदेश और मानवता के लिए लड़ना ही होगा, निरंतर आजीवन लड़ना होगा ।'' '' मेरी इटली की जनसंख्या दो करोड़ है । यदि इन दो करोड़ लोगों ने मन में निश्‍चय किया तो विदेशियों के वे पचहत्तर हजार सिपाही उन्हें दबा थोड़े सकते हैं! दो करोड़ लोग और उनका सहायक ईश्‍वर! ऐसी स्थिति में इटली पलक झपकते ही विदेशी सत्ता को चूर-चूर कर देगी । '' - जोसेफ मैझिनी उपर्युक्‍त कथन 22 जून, 1805 को इटली में जनमे महान् क्रांतिकारी जोसेफ मैझिनी के हैं, जिन्होंने अपनी प्रखर देशभक्‍त‌ि से इटली के स्वाधीनता आंदोलन को अनुप्राणित किया । प्रस्तुत पुस्तक ऐसे महान् राष्‍ट्रभक्‍त का भारत के महान् क्रांतिकारी स्वातव्यवीर विनायक दामोदर सावरकर द्वारा रचित जीवन-चरित्र है । इसमें इटली के स्वातंत्र्यवीर, देशभक्‍त मैझिनी का आत्मचरित्र और कुछ राजनीतिक लेख संकलित हैं । इन लेखों ने दो करोड़ लोगों में चेतना भर दी । इन लेखों से यूरोपीय सिंहासन उलट-पुलट हो गए । इन लेखों से इटली स्वतंत्र हुआ । इन लेखों में सभी पराधीन देशों को स्वतंत्र करने की शक्‍त‌ि ठूस-ठूसकर भरी हुई है । मैझिनी के तत्त्व केवल इटली के लिए ही लागू नहीं होते, इटली केवल निमित्त बना है । राजनीति-शास्त्र के ये महत् सत्य उस महात्मा ने अखिल मानव-जाति के लिए प्रकट किए हैं । इस स्वतंत्रता-सुधा का मिष्‍टान्न सभी संतप्‍त भूमिकाओं की ओर मुड़ गया है ।

भारतीय वाड.मय में सावरकर साहित्य का महत्त्वपूर्ण स्थान है। मातृभूमि की स्वतंत्रता के लिए प्राण हथेली पर रखकर जूझनेवाले महान् क्रांतिकारी; जातिभेद, अस्पृश्यता, अंधश्रद्धा जैसी सामाजिक बुराइयों को समूल नष्‍ट करने का आग्रह रखनेवाले स्वातंत्र्यवीर सावरकर ने इस ग्रंथ में भारतीय इतिहास पर विहंगम दृष्‍टि डाली है। विद्वानों में सावरकर लिखित इतिहास जितना प्रामाणिक और निष्पक्ष माना गया है उतना अन्य लेखकों का नहीं। प्रस्तुत ग्रंथ ‘छह स्वर्णिम पृष्‍ठ’ में हिंदू राष्‍ट्र के इतिहास का प्रथम स्वर्णिम पृष्‍ठ है यवन-विजेता सम्राट् चंद्रगुप्‍त की राजमुद्रा से अंकित पृष्‍ठ, यवनांतक सम्राट् पुष्यमित्र की राजमुद्रा से अंकित पृष्‍ठ भारतीय इतिहास का द्वितीय स्वर्णिम पृष्‍ठ, सम्राट् विक्रमादित्य की राजमुद्रा से अंकित पृष्‍ठ इतिहास का तृतीय स्वर्णिम पृष्‍ठ है। हूणांतक राजा यशोधर्मा के पराक्रम से उद्दीप्‍त पृष्‍ठ इतिहास का चतुर्थ स्वर्णिम पृष्‍ठ, मुसलिम शासकों के साथ निरंतर चलते संघर्ष और उसमें मराठों द्वारा मुसलिम सत्ता के अंत को हिंदू इतिहास का पंचम स्वर्णिम पृष्‍ठ कह सकते हैं और अंतिम स्वर्णिम पृष्‍ठ है अंग्रेजी सत्ता को उखाड़कर स्वातंत्र्य प्राप्‍त करना। विश्‍वास है, क्रांतिवीर सावरकर के पूर्व ग्रंथों की भाँति इस ग्रंथ का भी भरपूर स्वागत होगा। सुधी पाठक भारतीय इतिहास का सम्यक् रूप में अध्ययन कर इतिहास के अनेक अनछुए पहलुओं और घटनाओं से परिचित होंगे।

काला पानी की भयंकरता का अनुमान इसी एक बात से लगाया जा सकता है कि इसका नाम सुनते ही आदमी सिहर उठता है। काला पानी की विभीषिका, यातना एवं त्रासदी किसी नरक से कम नहीं थी। विनायक दामोदर सावरकर चूँकि वहाँ आजीवन कारावास भोग रहे थे, अतः उनके द्वारा लिखित यह उपन्यास आँखों-देखे वर्णन का-सा पठन-सुख देता है। इस उपन्यास में मुख्य रूप से उन राजबंदियों के जीवन का वर्णन है, जो ब्रिटिश राज में अंडमान अथवा ‘काला पानी’ में सश्रम कारावास का भयानक दंड भुगत रहे थे। काला पानी के कैदियों पर कैसे-कैसे नृशंस अत्याचार एवं क्रूरतापूर्ण व्यवहार किए जाते थे, उनका तथ वहाँ की नारकीय स्थितियों का इसमें त्रासद वर्णन है। इसमें हत्यारों, लुटेरों, डाकुओं तथा क्रूर, स्वार्थी, व्यसनाधीन अपराधियों का जीवन-चित्र भी उकेरा गया है। उपन्यास में काला पानी के ऐसे-ऐसे सत्यों एवं तथ्यों का उद्घाटन हुआ है, जिन्हें पढ़कर रोंगटे खड़े हो जाते हैं।

भारतीय क्रांतिकारी इतिहास में स्वातंत्रवीर विनायकदामोदर सावरकर का व्यक्तित्व अप्रतिम गुणों का द्योतक है। 'सावरकर' शब्द ही अपने आपमें पराक्रम, शौर्य औरउत्कट देशभक्ति का पर्याय है। अपनी आत्मकथा मेरा आजीवन कारावास में उन्होंने जेल-जीवन की भीषण यातनाओं- ब्रिटिश सरकार द्वारा दो-दो आजीवन कारावास की सजा सुनाए जाने के बाद अपनी मानसिक स्थिति, भारत की विभिन्न जेलों में भोगी गई यातनाओं और अपमान, फिर अंडमान भेजे जाने पर जहाज पर कैदियों की यातनामय नारकीय स्थिति, कालापानी पहुँचने पर सेलुलर जेल की विषम स्थितियों, वहाँ के जेलर बारी का कूरतम व्यवहार, छोटी-छोटी गलतियों पर दी जानेवाली अमानवीय शारीरिक यातनाएँ यथा-कोडे लगाना, बेंत से पिटाई करना, दंडी-बेड़ी लगाकर उलटा लटका देना आदि का वर्णन मन को उद्वेलित करदेनेवाला है। विषम परिस्थितियों में भी कैदियों में देशभक्ति और एकता की भावना कैसे भरी, अनपढ़ कैदियों को पड़ाने का अभियान कैसे चलाया, किस प्रकार दूसरे रचनात्मक कार्यो को जारी रखा तथा अपनी दृढ़ता और दूरदर्शिता से जेल के वातावरण को कैसे बदल डाला, कैसे उन्होंने अपनी खुफिया गतिविधियों चलाई आदि का सच्चा इतिहास वर्णित है। इसके अतिरिक्त ऐसे अनेक प्रसंग, जिनको पढ़कर पाठकउत्तेजित और रोमांचित हुए बिना न रहेंगे। विपरीत-से-विपरीत परिस्थिति में भी कुछ अच्छा करने की प्रेरणा प्राप्त करते हुए आप उनके प्रति श्रद्धानत हुएबिनान रहेंगे।

Veer Savarkar was the first man who called the mutiny of 1857 ‘A War of Independence’. Until his time, no Indian had dared to say so. The martyrs of 1857 are really fortunate that they got such a historian to tell their history who himself was both a historian and a creator of history. At times, we visualise Veer Savarkar coloured in the red colour of that revolution, as if he himself was present on the battlefield and participated in the heroic war. At other times, we see him patiently analyse the strengths and weaknesses of both sides—why the mutineers lost and why the British won. The way he analyses the politico-military aspects of the revolution shows his wisdom as a youth of 26 years.
