The demand for creation of a separate Islamic country for Muslims by dividing India was being raised since 1940. - Description: सामान्यतः दो व्यक्तियों या परिवारों के बीच लिखे गए पत्र उनके निजी अख़बार होते हैं और साहित्यकारों के पत्र उनके जीवन एवं साहित्य के अन्तर्तम तक पहुँचने के चोर दरवाज़े। इस संग्रह में (सन् 1951 से 1969 तक) अठारह सालों के बीच मोहन राकेश और उपेंद्रनाथ ‘अश्क’ एवं श्रीमती कौशल्या ‘अश्क’ द्वारा एक-दूसरे को लिखे गए लगभग सवा चार सौ पत्रों में से चुने हुए पत्र प्रस्तुत किए गए हैं। मोहन राकेश और उपेंद्रनाथ अश्क का व्यक्तित्व अपने बहुस्तरीय जटिल सम्बन्धों के कारण काफ़ी दिलचस्प और कुतूहल-भरा रहा है। उनके इन तमाम खतों में अश्क और राकेश के ख़ून की गर्मी, दिल की धड़कन, दिमाग़ी उथल-पुथल, बेताबी, बेसब्री, जद्दोजहद, हँसी-ख़ुशी, दुःख-दर्द, भाव-अभाव और आत्मीयता-अन्तरंगता के न मालूम कितने रंग बिखरे हुए मिलेंगे। उनके सम्मोहक व्यक्तित्व की तीखी-भीनी महक का भी अहसास होगा। हिन्दी साहित्य के जाने-माने मुँहफट अश्क और बेबाक राकेश के इन पत्रों से जिन पाठकों को किसी विस्फोट या हंगामे की उम्मीद है, उन्हें शायद किसी हद तक निराश होना पड़े। जिन्हें इन दोनों महत्त्वपूर्ण लेखकों और विशेषतः मोहन राकेश के रचनाशील अन्तर्मन को देखने तथा व्यक्तिगत जीवन-संघर्ष को जानने की अपेक्षा होगी, उन्हें इनके दर्शन यहाँ पूरी प्रामाणिकता एवं सहजता के साथ होंगे। तत्कालीन परिवेश, साहित्यिक-आन्दोलनों और हलचलों की तसवीर भी साफ दिखाई देगी। अश्क और राकेश के जीवन, साहित्य और उनके समय में दिलचस्पी रखनेवाले जिज्ञासुओं, अध्येताओं एवं इतिहासकारों को ये पत्र निश्चय ही इतिहास के कालजयी सन्दर्भ-स्रोत जैसे ज़रूरी और दस्तावेज़ी महत्त्व के प्रतीत होंगे। यह पुस्तक वास्तव में ‘राकेश और परिवेश : पत्रों में’ का पुनश्च ही है, और इसे उसकी पूरक के रूप में ही देखा जाना चाहिए।
