The story is told. The curtain has been brought down on it. Two life sentences have been run. And I have brought my recollections of them within the cover of this book. They are narrated in brief and put together within the narrowest. When I came into this world, God sent me here, possibly on a sort of life sentence. सिनेमा छवियों का खेल है। उन्हीं चेहरों ने अवाम के दिलों पर राज किया है जो उनके भीतर एक छवि की तरह समा गए। हिन्दी सिनेमा में कुन्दनलाल सहगल से लेकर शाहरुख़ ख़ान तक अलग-अलग कालखंडों में अनेक छवियों ने दर्शकों को सम्मोहित किया। कुछ अपना सम्मोहन अल्पकाल में ही खो बैठीं और कुछ आज तक नुमायाँ हैं। सिनेमा के पर्दे पर कोई छवि तभी मक़बूल होती है जब कलाकार द्वारा अभिनीत पात्र उसके व्यक्तित्व को आच्छादित कर लेते हैं। अपने चरित्र से एकमेक होकर जब कोई कलाकार किसी सार्थक कृति में प्रस्तुत होता है तब कहीं जाकर एक इमेज में ढल पाता है। अनेक प्रतिभाशाली अभिनेता किसी सार्थक चरित्र की प्रतीक्षा ही करते रह जाते हैं और उनकी समूची प्रतिभा सार्थकता का सन्धान नहीं कर पाती। वहीं इसके विपरीत साधारण क्षमता के अभिनेता भी किसी सार्थक चरित्र के द्वारा एक हरदिल-अज़ीज़ इमेज में तब्दील होकर यादगार बन जाते हैं। कुन्दनलाल सहगल, अशोक कुमार, दिलीप कुमार, राजकपूर, देव आनन्द, बलराज साहनी जैसी अनेक छवियाँ आज सिनेमा के वर्तमान में मौजूद न होते हुए भी अपनी जीवन्त उपस्थिति अपनी छवियों के कारण ही बनाए हुए हैं। इक्कीसवीं शताब्दी में हिन्दी सिनेमा ने एक नई छवि गढ़ी—मुन्नाभाई। उसे संजय दत्त ने इस तरह अंजाम दिया कि संजय दत्त खो गया और मुन्नाभाई ने उसकी जगह ले ली। मुन्नाभाई की यह छवि इक्कीसवीं शताब्दी में आज सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण हो गई है तो सिर्फ़ इसलिए क्योंकि यह यथार्थ और कल्पना को एकाकार करते हुए हमें आत्मावलोकन के लिए प्रेरित करती है। वह हमारे भीतर इस तरह पैठती है कि हम सत् की ओर एक क़दम आगे बढ़ाने का प्रयास करते हैं। नकारात्मक छवियों का भयानक संजाल तोड़कर मुन्नाभाई जीवन के सकारात्मक बिम्ब को उभारता है। सो, ‘जुग जुग जिए मुन्नाभाई’—जो आदमी से इंसान बनने की प्रक्रिया में हमारा हमसफ़र बनता है। वह छवि जो हिन्दी सिनेमा में सबसे नई उभरकर ही नहीं आई है, अपितु जिसने परिदृश्य को सार्थक दिशा की ओर मोड़ने में भी अपना विनम्र योगदान दिया है।

पिछले दो-तीन दशकों में हिन्दी नवजागरण और हिन्दी-नागरी आन्दोलन पर केन्द्रित अध्ययनों ने हिन्दी लोकवृत्त की हमारी समझ को निश्चित ही समृद्ध किया है। लेकिन जहाँ तक हिन्दी के भाषाई संगठनों का सवाल है तो ये अध्ययन हिन्दीभाषी क्षेत्र के इन भाषाई संगठनों के समूचे वजूद को प्रायः भाषायी राजनीति के चश्मे से ही देखते हैं। कहना न होगा कि ऐसा कोई भी मूल्यांकन उन भाषायी संगठनों की बहुआयामी गतिविधियों के आकलन का एक संकीर्ण और सीमित नजरिया है। ऐसे मूल्यांकनों में इन भाषायी संगठनों की वह भूमिका परिदृश्य से ओझल हो जाती है, जो वे हिन्दी लोकवृत्त में ज्ञानोत्पादन की प्रक्रिया में निभा रहे थे। इसलिए मौजूदा पुस्तक में हिन्दी साहित्य सम्मेलन का इतिहास लिखते हुए उसे सिर्फ भाषा की राजनीति या हिन्दी-नागरी आन्दोलन में हिन्दी साहित्य सम्मेलन की भूमिका तक ही सीमित नहीं किया गया है, बल्कि हिन्दी साहित्य सम्मेलन की बहुआयामी गतिविधियों और हिन्दी लोकवृत्त में ज्ञान के सृजन में सम्मेलन के योगदान को समग्रता से विश्लेषित करने का प्रयास भी इसमें हुआ है।
‘भाषा की राजनीति, ज्ञान की परम्परा’ एक संस्था के रूप में हिन्दी साहित्य सम्मेलन के इतिहास को उसकी समग्रता में प्रस्तुत करने का प्रयास है। इसमें हिन्दी लोकवृत्त के निर्माण में हिन्दी साहित्य सम्मेलन की भूमिका और उसके योगदान का विस्तृत विश्लेषण तो हुआ ही है। साथ ही, हिन्दी साहित्य सम्मेलन के स्थापना की ऐतिहासिक पृष्ठभूमि और उसकी शुरुआती गतिविधियों, सम्मेलन के वार्षिक अधिवेशनों, सम्मेलन द्वारा कराई जाने वाली परीक्षाओं और उसके प्रकाशनों की चर्चा भी इस पुस्तक में विस्तार से की गई है। हिन्दी-नागरी आन्दोलन से सम्बद्ध अन्य संस्थाओं के साथ मिलकर सम्मेलन ने कैसे काम किया, इसका विश्लेषण भी इसमें हुआ है। बीसवीं सदी के पूर्वार्ध में भाषा की राजनीति ने कैसे करवट ली और हिन्दी साहित्य सम्मेलन की इसमें क्या भूमिका रही, इतिहास-लेखन के क्षेत्र में हिन्दी साहित्य सम्मेलन और उससे जुड़े विद्वानों और इतिहासकारों के मत और उनके योगदान की पड़ताल के साथ ही हिन्दी में विज्ञान सम्बन्धी लेखन के क्षेत्र में हिन्दी साहित्य सम्मेलन के योगदान को भी इस पुस्तक में विश्लेषित किया गया है.

कर्म शब्द ‘कृ’ धातु से निकला है; ‘कृ’ धातु का अर्थ है—करना। जो कुछ किया जाता है, वही कर्म है। इस शब्द का पारिभाषिक अर्थ ‘कर्मफल’ भी होता है। दार्शनिक दृष्टि से यदि देखा जाए, तो इसका अर्थ कभी-कभी वे फल होते हैं, जिनका कारण हमारे पूर्व कर्म रहते हैं। परंतु कर्मयोग में कर्म शब्द से हमारा मतलब केवल कार्य ही है। मानवजाति का चरम लक्ष्य ज्ञानलाभ है। प्राच्य दर्शनशास्त्र हमारे सम्मुख एकमात्र यही लक्ष्य रखता है। मनुष्य का अंतिम ध्येय सुख नहीं वरन् ज्ञान है; क्योंकि सुख और आनंद का तो एक न एक दिन अंत हो ही जाता है। अतः यह मान लेना कि सुख ही चरम लक्ष्य है, मनुष्य की भारी भूल है। संसार में सब दुःखों का मूल यही है कि मनुष्य अज्ञानवश यह समझ बैठता है कि सुख ही उसका चरम लक्ष्य है।

मेरी की यह सर्वप्रमुख कृति 1792 में प्रकाशित हुई। प्रकाशित होने के साथ ही इसकी ख्याति इंग्लैंड के बाहर पूरे यूरोप में और अमेरिका तक में फैल गई। मेरी ने इस कृति में प्रबोधनकाल की तर्कणा और बुर्जुआ क्रान्ति के ‘स्वतंत्रता-समानता-भ्रातृत्व’ के सिद्धान्तों को स्त्री-समुदाय के ऊपर भी समान रूप से लागू करते हुए स्पष्ट शब्दों में यह स्थापना दी कि कोई भी समतावादी सामाजिक दर्शन तब तक वास्तविक अर्थों में समतावादी नहीं हो सकता, जब तक कि वह स्त्रियों को समान अधिकार और अवसर देने की तथा उनकी हिफ़ाज़त करने की हिमायत नहीं करता। इस स्मारकीय कृति में मेरी वोल्सटनक्राफ़्ट ने ‘शिक्षा की कपटपूर्ण और कृत्रिम प्रणाली’ की निर्भीक-विध्वंसक आलोचना प्रस्तुत करते हुए यह तर्क दिया है कि यह मध्यवर्ग की स्त्रियों को ‘नारीत्व’ (फ़ेमिनिनिटी) के मिथ्याभासी दमघोंटू आदर्शों के दायरे में जीने के लिए तैयार करती है। शैशवावस्था से ही उन्हें यह शिक्षा दी जाती है कि ‘सौन्दर्य स्त्रियों का राजदंड होता है, कि दिमाग़ शरीर के हिसाब से अपने को ढालता है (यानी शारीरिक भिन्नता के चलते स्त्रियों का दिमाग़ भी अ़लग क़िस्म का होता है), और अपने स्वर्णजड़ित पिंजरे में चक्कर काटते हुए वे अपनी जेल को पसन्द करना सीख जाती हैं।’
मेरी वोल्सटनक्राफ़्ट ने अपने समाज के उग्र पुरुष-वर्चस्ववादी, रूढ़िवादी परिवेश में स्त्रियों को ‘तर्कपरक प्राणी’ के रूप में सम्बोधित करने का साहस किया और ऐसे व्यापकतर मानवीय आदर्शों का आकांक्षी बनने के लिए उनका आह्वान किया जिनमें अनुभूति के साथ तर्कणा और स्वतंत्रता के अधिकार का संश्लेषण हो।
