मेरी की यह सर्वप्रमुख कृति 1792 में प्रकाशित हुई। प्रकाशित होने के साथ ही इसकी ख्याति इंग्लैंड के बाहर पूरे यूरोप में और अमेरिका तक में फैल गई। मेरी ने इस कृति में प्रबोधनकाल की तर्कणा और बुर्जुआ क्रान्ति के ‘स्वतंत्रता-समानता-भ्रातृत्व’ के सिद्धान्तों को स्त्री-समुदाय के ऊपर भी समान रूप से लागू करते हुए स्पष्ट शब्दों में यह स्थापना दी कि कोई भी समतावादी सामाजिक दर्शन तब तक वास्तविक अर्थों में समतावादी नहीं हो सकता, जब तक कि वह स्त्रियों को समान अधिकार और अवसर देने की तथा उनकी हिफ़ाज़त करने की हिमायत नहीं करता। इस स्मारकीय कृति में मेरी वोल्सटनक्राफ़्ट ने ‘शिक्षा की कपटपूर्ण और कृत्रिम प्रणाली’ की निर्भीक-विध्वंसक आलोचना प्रस्तुत करते हुए यह तर्क दिया है कि यह मध्यवर्ग की स्त्रियों को ‘नारीत्व’ (फ़ेमिनिनिटी) के मिथ्याभासी दमघोंटू आदर्शों के दायरे में जीने के लिए तैयार करती है। शैशवावस्था से ही उन्हें यह शिक्षा दी जाती है कि ‘सौन्दर्य स्त्रियों का राजदंड होता है, कि दिमाग़ शरीर के हिसाब से अपने को ढालता है (यानी शारीरिक भिन्नता के चलते स्त्रियों का दिमाग़ भी अ़लग क़िस्म का होता है), और अपने स्वर्णजड़ित पिंजरे में चक्कर काटते हुए वे अपनी जेल को पसन्द करना सीख जाती हैं।’
मेरी वोल्सटनक्राफ़्ट ने अपने समाज के उग्र पुरुष-वर्चस्ववादी, रूढ़िवादी परिवेश में स्त्रियों को ‘तर्कपरक प्राणी’ के रूप में सम्बोधित करने का साहस किया और ऐसे व्यापकतर मानवीय आदर्शों का आकांक्षी बनने के लिए उनका आह्वान किया जिनमें अनुभूति के साथ तर्कणा और स्वतंत्रता के अधिकार का संश्लेषण हो।

- Description: साहित्य के हज़ारों साल लम्बे इतिहास में जिन चन्द काव्य-विभूतियों को विश्वव्यापी सम्मान प्राप्त है, ग़ालिब उन्हीं में से एक हैं। उर्दू के इस महान शायर ने अपनी युगीन पीड़ाओं को ज्ञान और बुद्धि के स्तर पर ले जाकर जिस ख़ूबसूरती से बयान किया, उससे समूची उर्दू शायरी ने एक नया अन्दाज़ पाया और वही लोगों के दिलो-दिमाग़ पर छा गया। उनकी शायरी में जीवन का हर पहलू और हर पल समाहित है, इसीलिए वह जीवन की बहुविध और बहुरंगी दशाओं में हमारा साथ देने की क्षमता रखती है। काव्यशास्त्र की दृष्टि से ग़ालिब ने स्वयं को ‘गुस्ताख़’ कहा है, लेकिन यही उनकी ख़ूबी बनी। उनकी शायरी में जो हलके विद्रोह का स्वर है, जिसका रिश्ता उनके आहत स्वाभिमान से ज़्यादा है, उसमें कहीं शंका, कहीं व्यंग्य और कहीं कल्पना की जैसी ऊँचाइयाँ हैं, वे उनकी उत्कृष्ट काव्य-कला से ही सम्भव हुई हैं। इसी से उनकी ग़ज़ल प्रेम-वर्णन से बढ़कर जीवन-वर्णन तक पहुँच पाई। अपने विशिष्ट सौन्दर्यबोध से पैदा अनुभवों को उन्होंने जिस कलात्मकता से शायरी में ढाला, उससे न सिर्फ़ वर्तमान के तमाम बन्धन टूटे, बल्कि वह अपने अतीत को समेटते हुए भविष्य के विस्तार में भी फैलती चली गई। निश्चय ही ग़ालिब का यह दीवान हमें उर्दू-शायरी की सर्वोपरि ऊँचाइयों तक ले जाता है।
