- Description: आज स्त्रियों के काम तथा राष्ट्रीय उत्पाद में उनके कुल योगदान का बड़ा महत्त्व राष्ट्रीय तथा अन्तरराष्ट्रीय दोनों ही स्तरों पर स्वीकार कर लिया गया है। यह भी मान लिया गया है कि एक पुरुष को साक्षर बनाने से एक व्यक्ति ही साक्षर होता है, जबकि एक स्त्री के शिक्षित होने से एक पूरा कुनबा! अकाट्य तौर से यह भी प्रमाणित हो चुका है, कि ग़रीबतम तबके की औरतों तक स्वास्थ्य सम्बन्धी जानकारियों तथा सुविधाएँ पहुँचाए बिना संक्रामक रोगों अथवा आबादी पर अंकुश लगाना क़तई नामुमकिन है। इसलिए ज़रूरत है कि संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ की वर्तमान रपट का महत्त्व तथा शरणार्थी समस्या का यह अनदेखा पहलू हमारी सरकार भी समझे और इन उपेक्षित स्त्रियों में कौन हिन्दू है, कौन ग़ैर-हिन्दू, इसकी स्वार्थी विवेचना की बजाय उन तक ज़रूरी नागरिक सुविधाएँ और आजीविका के संसाधन पहुँचाने की यथाशीघ्र चेष्टा की जाए, वरना लाख प्रयत्नों के बावजूद राष्ट्रीय प्रगति सही रफ़्तार नहीं पकड़ पाएगी। कवि रहीम ने कहा भी था, कि जिस व्यक्ति को याचक बनकर जाना पड़ता है, वह तो जीते जी मरता है, पर उससे भी गया-गुज़रा वह है, जिसके मुँह से निकलता है ‘नहीं’। क्या इन अधमरी स्त्रियों की ज़रूरतों को जाति-धर्म की तुला पर तौलते हुए हम हर बार राष्ट्र के ज़मीर की हत्या नहीं करते हैं?

- Description: समाज और वैचारिक दुनिया में औरत की जगह को लेकर चिन्ता और अध्ययन कोई नया विषय नहीं है। जॉन स्टुअर्ट मिल, मेरी वॉलस्टनक्राफ़्ट से होते हुए सीमोन द बोउवा तक होती हुई यह परम्परा भारत में प्रभा खेतान जैसी चिन्तकों तक आती है। स्त्री-विमर्श विचार के विविध अनुशासनों में अलग-अलग रूप में होता रहा है और हो रहा है, पर अन्तर्धारा एक ही है। यह पुस्तक स्त्री के विरोधाभासी जीवन की सामाजिक समस्याओं का समग्रता से मूल्यांकन करती है, पारम्परिक स्रोतों के साथ-साथ समाचार-पत्रों एवं साहित्य का प्रचुर मात्रा में उपयोग करते हुए इस पुस्तक की अध्ययन-परिधि को राजस्थान के तीन रजवाड़ों—जोधपुर, जैसलमेर एवं बीकानेर के विशेष सन्दर्भ में बीसवीं शताब्दी के पूर्वार्द्ध तक विस्तार दिया गया है। इस पुस्तक की ख़ासियत यह है कि इसमें सायास रजवाड़ों, ठिकानों से इतर सामान्य महिलाओं की स्थिति पर भी ध्यान केन्द्रित किया गया है और बीसवीं सदी के पूर्वार्द्ध के साक्षी रचनात्मक साहित्य और समाचार-पत्रों को बड़े पैमाने पर इतिहास-लेखन के स्रोत के रूप में इस्तेमाल किया गया है। जिस भौगोलिक क्षेत्र को यह कृति सम्बोधित है, उसके लिए ऐसी पुस्तक की बेहद ज़रूरत थी जिसे इस पुस्तक ने निस्सन्देह सफलतापूर्वक पूरा किया है। अनेक विधाओं में और विभिन्न माध्यमों के लिए समान अधिकार से लिखनेवाले दुष्यंत की विषयानुरूप सहज, सम्मोहक और प्रांजल भाषा ने इस पुस्तक को बहुत रोचक और पठनीय बना दिया है। रेखांकित किया जाना ज़रूरी है कि ‘स्त्रियाँ : पर्दे से प्रजातंत्र तक’ हिन्दी में मौलिक और रचनात्मक शोध की बानगी भी पेश करती है। विश्वास किया जा सकता है कि संजीदा और सघन वैचारिक बुनियाद पर गहन शोध के आधार पर लिखित इस पुस्तक को भारत में स्त्री इतिहास-लेखन के लिहाज से महत्त्वपूर्ण माना जाएगा।
