शरीर की आवश्यकता से अधिक कैलोरी वाला या अधिक चर्बीयुक्त भोजन वज़न बढ़ाने में सहायक होता है। यहाँ तक कि केवल 20 ग्राम वाला एक ब्रेड का टुकड़ा यदि अतिरिक्त मात्रा में रोज़ खाया जाए तो वह वज़न बढ़ा सकता है। इसी तरह 20 मिनट पैदल चलनेवाला व्यक्ति कार से जाने लगे या पैदल चलना छोड़ दे तो भी उसका वज़न बढ़ सकता है। दस वर्षों के दौरान ली गई अतिरिक्त 48 किलो कैलोरी से 20 किलो चर्बी शरीर में जमा हो सकती है। बच्चों में चाकलेट और फास्ट-फूड खाने की आदतें भी वज़न बढ़ाने में सहायक होती हैं। आए दिन होनेवाली पार्टियों में जानेवाले लोग अकसर ज़रूरत से ज़्यादा खा जाते हैं, यह अधिक खाना उनका वज़न बढ़ाने में सहायक होता है। कुछ लोग तनाव या समस्याओं के कारण भी ज़्यादा खा जाते हैं। इसी तरह कई लोग अच्छे स्वाद के कारण भी अधिक भोजन करते हैं। कई लोगों में एक ग़लत धारणा प्रचलित है कि स्वस्थ रहने के लिए ख़ूब खाना चाहिए और फिर ख़ूब खानेवाली धारणा उन्हें मोटा बना देती है।

- Description: पूर्वी उत्तर प्रदेश जहाँ एक तरफ गरीबी की मार झेल रहा था, वहीं दूसरी तरफ 1970 के दशक से माफिया गतिविधियों की शुरुआत पूर्वी उत्तर प्रदेश से ही शुरू हुई। शुरुआती दौर में गोरखपुर इसका केंद्रबिंदु बना । माफिया गिरोहों में वर्चस्व की लड़ाई शुरू हो गई। वर्चस्व का मतलब जमीनें हड़प लेंगे, खरीदेंगे नहीं। पेट्रोल-डीजल भरा लेंगे, पर पैसे नहीं देंगे; कोई आँख मिलाकर बात नहीं करेगा। गोरखपुर में हुए गैंगवार ने पूर्वांचल के वाराणसी, आजमगढ़, मऊ, गाजीपुर, प्रयागराज, चंदौली, मिर्जापुर, भदोही जिलों को भी अपनी चपेट में ले लिया। 1990 के दशक में सीवान, बिहार के शहाबुद्दीन, गाजीपुर के मुख्तार अंसारी और प्रयागराज के अतीक अहमद का माफिया सिंडिकेट बना। सीवान का शहाबुद्दीन, गाजीपुर का मुख्तार अंसारी और प्रयागराज का अतीक अहमद ऐसे माफिया हुए, जिन्होंने एक-दूसरे के सहयोग से अपने माफियाराज को मजबूत बनाया और अकूत संपत्ति बनाई । उनके गुर्गे एक साथ मिलकर फिरौती के लिए अपहरण, हत्या, किराए पर हत्याएँ जैसे जघन्य अपराध करते थे । माफियाओं के कुकर्मों और समाज को भयाक्रांत कर अपराधों को अंजाम देने की क्रूर मानसिकता को अत्यंत प्रामाणिक और सिलसिलेवार ढंग से प्रस्तुत करती पुस्तक, जो इन अपराधियों की कार्यशैली और वहशीपन को बेनकाब करती है।
