Siddique Alam is regarded as one of the foremost contemporary fiction writers in the Indian subcontinent. In addition to two novellas and four short story collections, he has published three novels to date, among which Cheeni Kothi and Saleha Saleha are considered masterpieces of magical realism. In 2023, the English translation of his short stories, The Kettledrum and Other Stories, was awarded the Amory Square Prize for South Asian Literature by a literary institution in New York. Hindi translations of his novels and stories have been published in book form, while English translations have been included in several prominent anthologies both in India and abroad.
