It deeply influences the Indian society and emerged as a debate between Brahmo Samaj and Hinduism.

Rabishankar Bal’s novel “Rumi – Ek Aaina Si Zindagi” portrays the spiritual revolution that transformed Jalaluddin Balkhi into Maulana Rumi. The work offers a fresh interpretation of the centuries-spanning influence of the Masnavi and Rumi’s poetry. His celebrated novel Dozakhnama was honoured with the Bankimchandra Smriti Award (2011). The English translations of his works, Dozakhnama and Aaina Jeevan, were also widely appreciated. This novel has been translated from Bengali by well-known translator Amrita Bera.

उन्नीसवीं सदी की मशहूर तवायफ़ उमराव जान ‘अदा’ लखनऊ और आस-पास के इलाक़ों की ख़ास महफ़िलों की रौनक़ हुआ करती थी। उसकी ख़ूबसूरती, शोख़ अदाओं, नाच-गाने और शायरी के मद्दाहों में उस ज़माने के ख़ानदानी रईस, जोशीले नवाबज़ादे और नामी ग़ुण्डे तक शामिल थे। लेकिन फ़ैज़ाबाद के एक जमादार की बेटी अमीरन के मशहूर तवायफ़ उमराव जान बनने की कहानी काफ़ी अफ़सोसनाक है और पढ़ने वाले इसे पढ़ते हुए जज़्बाती हो उठते हैं। इस कहानी को मिर्ज़ा हादी रुस्वा ने इस तरह से बयान किया है कि उमराव जान की ज़िन्दगी के सफ़र का हर मंज़र हमारी आँखों के सामने ज़िन्दा हो उठता है। इस किताब को पहली बार 1899 में छापा गया था और उसके बाद से इस कहानी को कई बार किताबों और फ़िल्मों की शक्ल में सामने लाया जा चुका है मगर लोगों में इसकी दिलचस्पी आज भी बरक़रार है।

The ‘Middle-Aged Teenagers’ is a short novel with a strong story line and clearly etched out characters which Indian readers will relate to. It is the story of a group of friends who, now in their 40s, embark on a stag weekend to Goa, hoping to relive earlier times. Happily married but looking for excitement elsewhere, the five get out of the mundane to be their natural selves. The story brings out the contrast between this trip and one taken 23 years ago when they were just out of school, cash-strapped and immature. But what the two trips have in common is their propensity to run into trouble. If they had steered clear of misery as teenagers, they find themselves in a bigger pit on this trip. In a hilarious climax that has them at the mercy of underworld goons at a sleazy joint, they end up fulfilling their long forgotten desires that laid buried under the pressure of home and hearth. The story has a subtle but strong message for the readers— that they can pursue their desires, which are often not very difficult to achieve.

राहुल सांकृत्यायन के ऐतिहासिक उपन्यासों में ‘सिंह सेनापति’ का विशेष स्थान है। इसमें उस वैशाली की ढाई हजार साल पूर्व की ऐतिहासिक गाथा को लिपिबद्ध किया गया है, जिसे गणतंत्र की जननी माना जाता है। इस उपन्यास में राहुल दिखलाते है कि गणतांत्रिक अथवा प्रजातांत्रिक शासन व्यवस्था से भारत का परिचय हजारों साल पहले हो चुका था। वैशाली के निवासियों ने, आज से ढाई हजार वर्ष पूर्व अपने लिए गणतांत्रिक व्यवस्था का आविष्कार कर लिया था और उसको सफलतापूर्वक संचालित किया था। ऐतिहासिक तथ्यों के जरिये वे इस कथा को न सिर्फ जीवन्तता बल्कि प्रामाणिकता भी प्रदान करते हैं। उपन्यास की कथा युद्ध और प्रेम का आधार लेकर आगे बढ़ती है, जिसमें तत्कालीन युग और जीवन को सूक्ष्मता से चित्रित किया गया है। साथ ही उस समय के सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक-नैतिक मूल्यबोधों के बीच ​स्त्रियों की आजादी, बराबरी, भाई-चारा आदि को विशेष रूप से रेखांकित किया गया है। परिणामत: यह कृति अपने ऐतिहासिक परिधि को लाँघकर सार्वकालिक प्रासंगिकता प्राप्त कर लेती है।

आठ साल की एक लड़की सांतो दोमिंगो में अपने पिता–पापू–का इन्तज़ार करती है। यह इन्तज़ार उसे एक लम्बी और दर्दनाक मौत जैसा लगता है लेकिन वह राह देखती है कि पापू अमेरिका से आएँगे और अपनी दौलत और शोहरत की शानदार उपलब्धियों—चमचमाती नई कारों, पोलो शर्टों, सोने की चेन और सुन्दर जूतों से उसे अभिभूत कर देंगे। जब पापू आते हैं तो वह उसे फ़िल्म ‘फ़्राइडे द थर्टींथ’ के जेसन जैसे मालूम पड़ते हैं—स्मार्ट, चतुर और निर्मम। वे एक डोमिनिकन माफ़िया बॉस हैं, एक ड्रग डीलर, एक ऐसा शख़्स जो अविश्वसनीय रूप से ख़तरनाक है, लेकिन इससे उसकी बेटी ख़ुद को बेहद ताक़तवर और जीवन्त महसूस करती है। लड़की के जीवन में पापू आते हैं, ग़ायब हो जाते हैं और फिर एक बार और प्रकट होते हैं पैसे, गाड़ियों और मार-तमाम तोहफ़ों से लदे हुए, प्रेमिकाओं से घिरे हुए। सांतो दोमिंगो और अपने पिता के साथ की गई अमेरिका की जगर-मगर यात्राओं के बीच विभाजित, एक लड़की की बचपन की यादों को समेटे यह उपन्यास एक बेटी के प्यार के अलावा अपराध और मर्दानगी के आकर्षण और बड़ों की दुनिया की हिंसा का कभी न भूलने वाला चित्र पेश करता है। एक बच्ची की कल्पना के साथ व्यंग्य और विज्ञान-कथा के साथ ख़ौफ़ का कुशल मिश्रण, कैरेबियाई संस्कृति की पृष्ठभूमि में बुनी गई इस कहानी को अत्यन्त प्रभावी बना देता है।

इसी उपन्यास से विश्वप्रसिद्ध लेखक जेफरी आर्चर का रोचक-रोमांचक उपन्यास, जो किसी मसाला मूवी का आनंद तो देता ही है; साथ ही माया के मोहजाल में फँसे किरदारों की मनःस्थिति भी दिखाता है।

‘राजस्थानी रनिवास’ राहुल सांकृत्यायन की एक बहुचर्चित कृति है। भारतीय समाज से जुड़ा एक अत्यन्त प्रासंगिक प्रश्न इसके केन्द्र में है—पुरुष प्रधान सामन्ती समाज में स्त्रियों की परवशता। राहुल उन लेखकों में से थे जो लेखन को सामाजिक परिष्कार की संगति में देखते थे। इसलिए उन्होंने चुन-चुनकर उन विषयों पर लिखा जिनकी ओर लोगों का ध्यान आकर्षित करना वे आवश्यक समझते थे। ऐसे विषयों में एक तरफ इतिहास और संस्कृति की गौरवशाली चीजें थीं तो दूसरी तरफ वे चीजें जो हमारी उन्नति की राह में बाधा। प्रस्तुत पुस्तक में राहुल ने जो विषय उठाया है वह दूसरे प्रकार का है। पुस्तक की नायिका गौरी के मुख से वे राजस्थानी रनिवासों के सात पर्दों में रहने वाली रानियों-ठकुरानियों की दुःख भरी कहानी और वहां के पुरुषों की स्वेच्छाचारिता को वे पूरी साफगोई से उजागर करते हैं। स्त्रियों पर पुरुषों के नियंत्रण को सामन्ती समाज अपने वैभव और गौरव के रूप में पेश करता रहा है, लेकिन उसकी अमानवीय वास्तविकता किसी भी सहृदय व्यक्ति को बेचैन कर देगी। ‘राजस्थानी रनिवास’ इसी बेचैनी को बढ़ाने के उद्देश्य से रची गयी कृति है जिसका सन्देश आज भी उतना ही प्रासंगिक है।

हिन्दी के वरिष्ठ कवि-गद्यकार लीलाधर मंडलोई की यह आत्मकथा ‘जब से आँख खुली हैं’ केवल उनकी नहीं बल्कि सतपुड़ा के जंगलों में विस्थापित होकर पहुँचे खान-मज़दूरों, दलित-अल्पसंख्यक और पिछड़े वर्गों की भी कथा है। कोरकू, गोंड़ और भारिया आदिवासियों के जीवन के स्याह चित्र भी इसमें आपको मिलेंगे। वेस्टर्न कोल्ड फ़ील्ड के छिन्दवाड़ा और दमुआ जिलों में कोयला-खानों की एक बड़ी शृंखला है। एक में कोयला ख़त्म हुआ तो दूसरी, तीसरी, चौथी और यह प्रक्रिया चलती रहती है जिसमें मज़दूरों को बार-बार उजड़ना पड़ता है। न पक्की नौकरी, न अस्पताल, न स्कूल, न मकान; बस भूख, ग़रीबी, अकाल मृत्यु, दुर्घटनाएँ और दुखों का असीम संसार। ओपनकास्ट और अंडर ग्राऊंड खदानों में बाल-मज़दूर का जीवन जीते हुए लेखक ने यह सब बचपन में ही देख-जी लिया था। आस-पास का जीवन त्रासद था लेकिन जीवन की प्रतिकूलताओं में बनी सामुदायिकता ने वहाँ संघर्ष, जिजीविषा और आनन्द की एक पारिस्थितिकी भी निर्मित की थी जिसमें गोंडवाना, बुन्देलखंड और बाहर से आए लोगों की बोली-बानी, भाषा, खानपान, रहन-सहन और संगीत की समावेशी संस्कृति दिखाई देती थी। इस आत्मकथा को पढ़ते हुए हम जान पाते हैं कि खदानों की गहराइयों ने खदानों को कैसे खोखला कर दिया, कैसे जल-स्तर हज़ारों फ़ीट नीचे चला गया, पानी का संकट गहराया और जंगल उजड़ने लगा। जंगल का जीव-जगत समाप्त होने लगा। कई प्रजातियाँ खो गईं। आदिवासियों का विस्थापन शुरु हुआ। उनकी संस्कृति लुप्त होने लगी। सके अलावा प्राइवेट कम्पनी के कार्यकाल में शोषण, अनाचार, उपेक्षा, शोषण आदि के आख्यान भी इस पुस्तक का हिस्सा हैं।

पुलिसवाले ने अपनी दकनी उर्दू में कहा, ‘‘आप लोकां बड़े ऊँचे हाकिमान हैं तो इस प्राइवेट कार में क्या करता मियाँ? पायलट लोग तो सरकारी गाड़ी में तकरीबन घंटा भर पहले गए। अब जरा तकलीफ करके नीचे उतर आओ। तुम्हारी पूरी दास्तान फुरसत से थाने में सुनेंगे।’’ मैंने बहुत समझाया, पर बात इस मुद्दे पर खत्म हुई कि मैं जो अपने को प्रेसिडेंट साहेब का पायलट बता रहा था, अपना आई.डी. कार्ड भी नहीं दिखा पा रहा था। फिर उसने भाई साहेब से पूछा, ‘‘और हजरत, आप तो जरूर प्राइम मिनिस्टर साहेब के खासुलखास ड्राइवर होंगे?’’ मैंने आवाज ऊँची करके कहा, ‘‘अपने सीनियर ऑफिसर से तुरंत वॉकी-टॉकी पर बात कराइए, वरना मेरी नौकरी तो जाएगी, पर आपकी भी बचेगी नहीं।’’ नतीजा उलटा निकला। त्योरियाँ चढ़ाकर वह बोला, ‘‘अरे, मेरे को धमकी देते? जाने दो प्रेसिडेंट साहेब को, फिर मैं देखता मियाँ कि तुम फाख्ता उड़ाते कि हवाई जहाज।’’ जीवन और मृत्यु के खेल से गुजर जाने के बाद इस उड़ान का अंत भी सदा की तरह सकुशल रूप से हो गया। राष्ट्रपति महोदय के जाने के बाद हमारे कप्तान ने पीठ ठोंकी। मैंने पूछा, ‘‘सर, क्या ईनाम दे रहे हैं आप मुझको?’’ अपनी घनी मूँछों के नीचे से मुसकराते हुए उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘बस किसी को बताऊँगा नहीं कि महामहिम राष्ट्रपतिजी हैदराबाद एयरपोर्ट पर खड़े होकर आज महामहिम फ्लाइट लेफ्टिनेंट वर्मा की प्रतीक्षा करने के दंड से बच गए।’’ —इसी उपन्यास से

सूरज मेरे साथ में’ चार उपन्यासों का संकलन है। बाल एवं किशोर मन की दैनंदिन समस्याओं से जुड़े ये चारों उपन्यास सचमुच सूरज की ऐसी उजली किरण हैं, जो बच्चों के पथ को प्रकाशित करने में समर्थ हैं। ‘परीक्षा के बाद’ गौरव का स्कूली परीक्षा के साथ-साथ जीवन के इम्तिहान में भी ऊँचे अंक लेकर सफलता पाने का किस्सा है। बच्चों के लिए पल-पल जिन रोचक-रोमांचक घटनाओं की पिटारी खुलती है, वे उन्हें चमत्कृत किए बिना नहीं रहतीं। ‘खट्टी-मीठी गोलियाँ’ में बाल-मजदूरी उन्मूलन की बात कही गई है। ‘मुझे तो पढ़ना है’ में शिक्षा के बाल अधिकार को एक निर्धन तदपि पढ़ने की ललक रखनेवाले बालक के माध्यम से दरशाया गया है। ‘सूरज मेरे साथ में’ भी कथानायक रोशन के हौसलों की उड़ान है, जो उसे सफलता दिलाती है। कुल मिलाकर चारों उपन्यास बच्चों को सद्गुणों से तो जोड़ते ही हैं, जीवन के प्रति समझ भी जगाते हैं। कदाचित् यही आज के समय की माँग भी है।

इस पुस्तक के लेखक सरकार के लिए कार्य करनेवाले एक सैंतीस वर्षीय भारतीय हैं। भारत सरकार ने अपने मध्य क्रम के अधिकारियों के शिक्षण कार्यक्रम के अंतर्गत एम.बी.ए कोर्स हेतु उन्हें चुना और प्रायोजित किया था। इस कोर्स के लिए उन्हें एक अल्पज्ञात यूरोपीय देश स्लोवेनिया की राजधानी ल्युब्ल्याना भेजा गया। बीते हजारों वर्षों से यूरोपीय यात्री भारत की यात्रा करते और अपनी इन यात्राओं के बारे में लिखते रहे हैं। मेगस्थनीज से लेकर मार्को पोलो और निकोलो कॉण्टी से मार्क टली तक बहुत से श्वेत यूरोपियनों ने भारत की यात्रा कर अपने देशवासियों व भावी पीढ़ी के लाभ हेतु अपने अनुभवों को दर्ज किया है। इस अनुपात में, यूरोप की यात्रा करनेवाले भारतीयों की संख्या बहुत कम है और उनमें से भी अपने अनुभवों, दृष्टिकोणों व प्रतिक्रियाओं को दर्ज करनेवालों की संख्या तो और भी कम रही है। लेकिन पिछली शताब्दी में भारत इतना बदल गया है, जितना इतिहास में किसी भी शताब्दी में नहीं बदला था। आज इतिहास में पहली बार यूरोप से आनेवालों के मुकाबले यूरोप जानेवाले भारतीयों की संख्या अधिक हो गई है। इसके बावजूद कुछ अज्ञात कारणों से अपनी यूरोप यात्रा के अनुभवों को दर्ज करनेवाले भारतीयों की संख्या नगण्य ही है। यह पुस्तक इसी असंतुलन को साधने का एक विनीत प्रयास है, जो वहाँ की कला-संस्कृति-समाज का सांगोपांग दर्शन कराती है।

हिन्दी के श्रेष्ठ उपन्यासों में शामिल उपन्यास ‘भूले-बिसरे चित्र’ के विषय में आलोचकों ने कहा था–‘‘एक महान कृति–भारतीय समाज और परिवार के विकास की विविध दिशाओं और रूपों का एक विराट एवं प्रभावोत्पादक चित्र...’’ ‘टेढ़े-मेढ़े रास्ते’ और ‘भूले-बिसरे चित्र’ की परम्परा में‘सीधी-सच्ची बातें’ भगवतीचरण वर्मा की तीसरी महत्त्वपूर्ण कृति है जिसमें 1939 से 1948 तक के काल की एक सशक्त कहानी है, और जिसमें मानसिक संघर्ष और राजनीतिक संघर्ष का अभूतपूर्व सम्मिश्रण हुआ है। मध्यवर्गीय परिवार का एक युवक, कुशाग्र बुद्धि और तेजस्वी, अपनी नैतिकता, आस्था और विश्वास के साथ अनायास ही उस नवीन हलचल में आ पड़ता है, द्वितीय महायुद्ध, देश की स्वतंत्रता, देश का बँटवारा जिसके भाग थे। और अन्त में उसके सामने थी अन्दर की घुटन, आदर्शों के पीछे वैयक्तिक स्वार्थों और कमज़ोरियों का विकृत चित्र और निराशा। ‘सीधी-सच्ची बातें’ एक सशक्त कहानी है, और साथ ही सीधी-सच्ची बातें भी।
