- Description: It rained cats and dogs”, “I know where his shoe pinches”, “Yes, it was really a blessing in disguise”… These idioms are often used in common language in our day-to-day talk or even correspondence. Their usage makes the communication and message conveyed quite effective. The dictionary defines idiom as “a group of words whose meaning is different from the meaning of the individual words.” An idiom is a combination of words with figurative meanings. It often creates a picturesque image, which conveys the meaning. For e.g. ‘where the shoe pinches’, the image automatically creates the image of pain and trouble and the place where there is trouble. Similarly, ‘add fuel to the fire’—it creates the image of fire blazing more, and the meaning of aggravation comes out. The following example is widely employed to illustrate the point.

फ़ारसी भाषा, हिन्दी की ही तरह, भारतीय आर्य भाषा उपकुल का एक भाग है। ईरान एवं भारत, दोनों कृषि–प्रधान देश रहे हैं। दोनों की संस्कृतियों में अनेक समानताएँ आज भी विद्यमान हैं। मुग़ल–पूर्व, मुग़ल और मुग़लोत्तर शासन के दौरान हिन्दुस्तान में फ़ारसी भाषा का प्रसार एवं प्रचार अपनी चरम सीमा पर था। कबीरदास, सूरदास, मलिक मुहम्मद जायसी जैसे हिन्दी के कालजयी महान कवियों ने फ़ारसी भाषा के अनेक शब्दों को अपनी भावाभिव्यक्ति का साधन बनाया और उनका रचनात्मक प्रयोग किया। इस प्रकार कहा जा सकता है कि फ़ारसी ने हिन्दी साहित्य की रचनाधर्मिता पर भी अपनी अमिट छाप छोड़ी है। फ़ारसी के अनेक शब्द ऐसे भी हैं, जिनका चलन आज ईरान में लगभग समाप्त हो चला है, लेकिन हिन्दी में वे अब भी जीवित हैं और साहित्य में ही नहीं, आम बोलचाल की भाषा में प्रयोग किए जा रहे हैं। फ़ारसी के अनेक मुहावरे अनूदित होकर हिन्दी की निधि बन चुके हैं।
प्रस्तुत ‘फ़ारसी–हिन्दी शब्दकोश’ हज़ारों वर्षों में फैले भारत–ईरान के सांस्कृतिक सम्बन्धों को रेखांकित करनेवाला प्रथम शब्दकोश है। विभिन्न विषयों एवं अलग–अलग परिप्रेक्ष्यों से सम्बन्धित लगभग 25,000 शब्द–प्रविष्टियों से सम्पन्न यह शब्दकोश, जिसमें पुरातन और नवीन दोनों प्रकार की अर्थ–परम्पराओं का समावेश है, प्राचीन और अर्वाचीन शब्दों का सुन्दर मिश्रण है।
आशा है, यह शब्दकोश विभिन्न प्रकार के अध्ययनकर्ताओं तथा सामान्य पाठकों के लिए समान रूप से उपयोगी सिद्ध होगा।

- Description: हालाँकि आज उन्हें बहुत लोग नहीं जानते, लेकिन जन गोपाल आरम्भिक आधुनिक भारत के एक महत्त्वपूर्ण देशज बुद्धिजीवी थे। ‘जन गोपाल : संत दादू के जीवनीकार’ पुस्तक के लेखकों का कहना है कि ऐसे कई निर्गुण भक्त कवि रहे हैं जिन पर उनकी काव्य-मेधा और ऐतिहासिक अहमियत के बावजूद उतना ध्यान नहीं दिया गया जितने के वे हक़दार थे। उन्नींसवीं सदी के राजस्थानी कवि एवं कथावाचक जन गोपाल भी ऐसी ही प्रतिभा हैं। यह पुस्तक उनके जीवन और कृतित्व पर केन्द्रित एक अभूतपूर्व अध्ययन है। जन गोपाल किसी आम निर्गुणपंथी भक्त के साँचे में पूरी तरह फ़िट नहीं बैठते। उनका जन्म एक व्यापारी परिवार में हुआ; निर्गुण पंथ का चुनाव उन्होंने किसी पारिवारिक या सामाजिक परम्परा के चलते नहीं, बल्कि अपने सचेत निजी निर्णय के आधार पर किया। उन्होंने अपने साहित्य में न केवल छन्दशास्त्र, काव्य-परम्परा और शास्त्रीय हिन्दुस्तानी संगीत के अपने अद्भुत ज्ञान का बल्कि एक नागर तथा प्रगतिशील संवेदना का भी परिचय दिया। उनकी प्रमुख रचनाओं में ‘दादू जनम लीला’ का नाम सबसे पहले आता है जो उनके गुरु और अकबर के समकालीन दादू दयाल की जीवन-गाथा है। भागवत पुराण की कथाओं को भी उन्होंने अपने काव्य में पिरोया जिनमें ‘प्रह्लाद चरित्र’, ‘ध्रुव चरित्र’ और ‘जड़ भरत चरित्र’ मुख्य हैं। इस पुस्तक में स्पष्ट होता है कि जन गोपाल का विशेष महत्त्व इसलिए है कि उन्होंने लोक-प्रचलित पौराणिक कथाओं को अपनी हिन्दी व ब्रज रचनाओं में समकालीनता का एक सूक्ष्म तेवर दिया। साथ ही इन कथाओं के नैतिक पक्ष को नए रूप में रचने की प्रक्रिया में उन्होंने पारम्परिक धर्मशास्त्र के मूल तत्त्व पर भी नई दृष्टि डाली और भक्ति को एक समतावादी और मुक्तिकारी रूप में प्रस्तुत किया। जन गोपाल के जीवन और कृतित्व के विश्लेषण के साथ और भक्ति परम्परा में उन्हें उनका उचित स्थान देते हुए लेखकों ने इस पुस्तक में उनके रचे तीनों चरित्रों (प्रह्लाद, ध्रुव और भरत) के साथ ही उनके बीस पद भी प्रस्तुत किए हैं। देशज बौद्धिक परम्पराओं और निर्गुण भक्ति के अध्ययन के लिए यह पुस्तक निस्सन्देह महत्त्वपूर्ण है।
