- Description: पाणिनिकालीन भारतवर्ष आचार्य वासुदेवशरण अग्रवाल की अक्षय कीर्ति का स्वर्णकलश है। पाणिनि-संबंधी उनकी पहली कृति है--'पाणिनि ऐज सोर्स ऑफ इंडियन हिस्टरी '। डॉ. राधाकुमुद मुखर्जी के निर्देशन में लिखित यह उनका शोधप्रबंध है, जिसके लिए लखनऊ विश्वविद्यालय ने उन्हें सन् 1941 में पी-एच.डी. उपाधि प्रदान की थी। पाणिनि संबंधी उनके द्वारा संवर्द्धित रूप में पुनः प्रस्तुत दूसरा ग्रंथ-रत्न है--' इंडिया ऐज नोन टू पाणिनि '। इस पर सन् 1946 में लखनऊ विश्वविद्यालय ने ही उन्हें डी.लिटू. की उपाधि से विभूषित किया। उनके परीक्षकों में डॉ. राधाकुमुद मुखर्जी के अतिरिक्त महामहोपाध्याय डॉ. आर. शाम शास्त्री और प्रो. विधुशेखर भट्टाचार्य भी थे। वासुदेवजी ने द्वादश वर्षपर्यत संस्कृत भाषा और 'पाणिनीय अष्टाध्यायी ' का सम्यक् अध्ययन किया था । इसलिए वे पाणिनि के सूत्रों की व्याख्या में इतनी गहरी पैठ बना सके और भारत के इतिहास का स्वर्णिम पृष्ठ हमारे लिए उद्घाटित कर सके । उन्होंने एक बार पुन: इन दोनों कृतियों की सामग्री का उपयोग करते हुए हिंदी में एक सर्वथा नई कृति 'पाणिनिकालीन भारतवर्ष ' की रचना की, जो न केवल दोनों कृतियों का समाहार है, बल्कि अधिक पूर्णतर है। मातृभाषा हिंदी की अनुपम सेवा के साथ ही हिंदी-भाषियों पर उनका यह अतिशय अनुग्रह और उपकार है। प्राचीन बृहत्तर भारत की प्रामाणिक तस्वीर के लिए डॉ. अग्रवाल का यह ग्रंथ अनिवार्य है। इसमें पाणिनि और उनके शास्त्र के अतिरिक्त तत्कालीन भारत के भूगोल, सामाजिक जीवन, आर्थिक दशा, प्राचीन जनपद, राज्यतंत्र एवं शासन, शिक्षा और साहित्य, धर्म एवं दर्शन आदि सभी का विस्तार सहित विवरण और विवेचन है। यह भारतमाता के चरणों में अर्पित उनकी अनूठी श्रद्धांजलि और राष्ट्रभक्ति का अमिट अभिलेख है।

लेखक की इस पहचान को स्वयं उन्होंने जिस अकुंठ निष्ठा और मौन संकल्प के साथ जिया, उसके आयाम ऐतिहासिक हैं। उनका लेखक सिर्फ़ लिखता नहीं रहा, उसने अपनी सामाजिक, राजनैतिक और नागरिक ज़िम्मेदारियों का आविष्कार भी किया और लेखकीय अस्तित्व के सहज विस्तार के रूप में उन्हें स्थापित भी किया।
उन्होंने कई बार पुरस्कारों और सम्मानों को लेने से इनकार किया, क्योंकि वह उन्हें लेखक होने की हैसियत से ज़रूरी लगा। उन्होंने दशकों-दशक एक सम्पूर्ण रचना के अवतरण की धैर्यपूर्वक प्रतीक्षा की, क्योंकि लेखक होने की उनकी अपनी कसौटी बहुत ऊँची और कठोर रही। लेखक के रूप में अपने युवा दिनों में ही उन्होंने अपने पहले और बड़े उपन्यास को एक प्रतिष्ठित प्रकाशक से छपाई के बीच में ही इसलिए वापस ले लिया कि उन्हें अपनी भाषा से खिलवाड़ स्वीकार नहीं था। उन्होंने जीवन के लगभग तीन दशक कॉपीराइट की सुरक्षा के लिए लोकप्रियता और राजनीतिक पहुँच की धनी ताक़तों से अकेले अदालती लड़ाई लड़ी।
और आज उन्हें अपने स्वास्थ्य से ज़्यादा चिन्ता इस बात की है कि सत्तर साल की आज़ादी के बाद देश फिर एक ख़तरनाक मोड़ पर है। वे रात-दिन सोचती हैं कि भेदभाव की राजनीति के चलते जैसे उन्हें 1947 में विभाजन की विभीषिका से गुज़रना पड़ा, कहीं आज की राजनीति वही समय आज के बच्चों के लिए न लौटा लाए! मौजूदा सरकार की राजनीतिक और वैचारिक संकीर्णताएँ उन्हें एक सात्त्विक क्रोध से भर देती हैं जिसमें पूरी सदी छटपटाती दिखाई पड़ती है।
