The goal of religion is to eliminate discriminatory misconceptions and ignorance. But the reality is that this elimination has to be done through cognition at the individual level itself. From this point of view, the existence of the power of duality cannot be denied. Just as the existence of wave in the ocean cannot be denied, the existence of the wave of duality in the ocean of the Supreme Consciousness will have to be accepted; but keeping in mind that the real existence is not that of the wave but of the ocean.

- Description: डॉ. उदयभानु सिंह भारतीय दर्शन और संस्कृत काव्यशास्त्र के गहन अध्येता थे। तुलसीदास पर उनके ग्रन्थ अपने प्रकाशन-काल से ही निरन्तर तुलसी काव्य के रसग्राही पाठकों और शोधार्थियों के लिए प्रामाणिक स्रोत-सामग्री की भूमिका निबाह रहे हैं। ‘कामायनी-लोचन’ उसी परम्परा को आगे बढ़ानेवाली रचना है। विद्वान लेखक ने प्राक्कथन में इस तथ्य का उल्लेख किया है कि कामायनी आधुनिक काव्य का “ऐसा गौरवग्रन्थ है जिस पर सबसे अधिक आलोचनात्मक पुस्तकें तथा लेख लिखे गए हैं; सबसे अधिक टीकाएँ लिखी गई हैं, सबसे अधिक शोधपरक निबन्ध एवं प्रबन्ध प्रणीत हुए हैं, और सर्वाधिक विवाद भी हुआ है।” यह कथन इस सामग्री से उनके बाख़बर होने का प्रमाण है। इस सामग्री की ख़ूबियों या ख़ामियों पर उन्होंने कोई टिप्पणी नहीं की। विनम्रतापूर्वक बस इतना जोड़ा कि “ ‘कामायनी’ के विषय में बहुत-कुछ कहा जा चुका है, परन्तु बहुत-कुछ अनकहा भी रह गया है। अतएव उनके अध्ययन की शृंखला को आगे बढ़ाने की आवश्यकता है। ‘कामायनी-लोचन’ उसी शृंखला की एक कड़ी है।’’ कहना न होगा कि ‘कामायनी-लोचन’ हिन्दी में कामायनी की टीका-व्याख्याओं की किसी चली आती अधूरी परम्परा की पूरक कड़ी-भर नहीं है। उसमें जो कहने से रह गया उसे कहकर रिक्त स्थान की पूर्ति का दायित्व निर्वाह भर करने का प्रयास नहीं है। उसका आदर्श तो संस्कृत-आचार्यों की वह समृद्ध टीका-व्याख्या परम्परा है जिसके आधार पर लेखक ने इसका नामकरण किया है। दो खंडों में विभाजित इस ग्रन्थ में ‘कामायनी’ के सर्गों की व्याख्या-समीक्षा के साथ इसकी शब्द-सूची प्रस्तुत की गई है। प्रस्तुति की एक निश्चित प्रविधि है। ऐसा ढाँचाबद्ध पैटर्न जिससे एकरूपता और एकरसता एक साथ पैदा होती है। एक ऐसा अकादमिक अनुशासन जिसका पालन वे शिक्षक के रूप में अपनी कक्षाओं में भी करते थे। वे पहले सर्ग-वार कथा-सूत्र प्रस्तुत करते हैं, उसके बाद एक संक्षिप्त समीक्षात्मक टिप्पणी जोड़कर अन्त में शब्दार्थ देते हैं—जिसे उन्होंने शब्द-सूची कहा है। इस प्रकार ‘लोचन’ कामायनी का शब्दकोश भी है। अकादमिक अनुशासन के विरोधियों को इसकी विधिबद्धता से रसज्ञता और सर्जनात्मकता की कमी की शिकायत हो सकती है। भूलना नहीं चाहिए कि इसका रचयिता दर्शन, व्याकरण और काव्यशास्त्र का अध्येता विद्वान तो था, अभिनवगुप्त की तरह कवि नहीं। उनकी यह कृति भले ही पाठकों को गहरी रसमग्नता का संतोष न दे पर ‘कामायनी’ की समझ में अनेक भ्रान्तियों का निवारण करेगी और उसकी गहन अर्थ-व्यंजनाओं के उद्घाटन में मददगार होगी—व्युत्पत्यर्थ और दार्शनिक अनुषंगों की दृष्टि से। —निर्मला जैन
