- Description: डी.एन.ए. मूलभूत आनुवंशिक पदार्थ है और बहुत थोड़े से लोगों को साठ साल पहले यह भान हुआ कि डी.एन.ए. ही जीवन की कुंजी है। जेम्स डी. वॉट्सन उन्हीं में से एक थे जिन्होंने अपने सहयोगी फ्रांसिस क्रिक के साथ जीवन के इस अनूठे रहस्य की संरचना को खोजा और इसके साथ ही बीसवीं सदी के विज्ञान को नए पंख लगा दिए। इस खोज को बीसवीं सदी की दो सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण वैज्ञानिक घटनाओं में से एक माना जाता है। इस खोज ने डी.एन.ए. पर शोध का जो तूफ़ान चलाया था, वह आज तक थमा नहीं है। बात फिर चाहे जीन्स के पशुओं में परिस्थापन की हो या फिर फ़सलों की प्रकृति बदलने की, आप जीन्स या डी.एन.ए. से बच नहीं सकते। लेकिन यह शोध अपने साथ जो विवाद लाया था, वह भी आज तक ज़िन्दा है। क्रिक और वॉट्सन को कुछ रसायन विज्ञान का ज्ञान था, लेकिन दोनों में से किसी ने भी अपने शोध के परिणाम तक पहुँचने के लिए कभी प्रयोगशाला-परीक्षण नहीं किए थे। इसके विपरीत उन्होंने दूसरों द्वारा किए गए शोध को आधार बनाकर सिर्फ़ मॉडल बनाए—और बात बन गई। इस क्रम में केवेंडिश की प्रयोगशाला में रोज़ालिंड फ़्रैकलिन द्वारा लिए गए एक्स-रे चित्रों की विशेष भूमिका थी। वॉट्सन ने वह मशहूर चित्र 51 बिना रोज़ालिंड फ़्रैकलिन की जानकारी के रोज़ालिंड के सहयोगी मॉरिस विल्किन्स की मदद से देख लिया था। वह चित्र स्पष्ट रूप से डी.एन.ए. की प्रकृति को दिखा रहा था। इसके बाद वॉट्सन ज़ोर-शोर से मॉडल बनाने में लग गए। लेकिन अपने शोध में उन्होंने रोज़ालिंड के उस चित्र की भूमिका को कभी नहीं स्वीकारा, न ही अपनी खोज के श्रेय में रोज़ालिंड को कोई हिस्सा दिया। बल्कि इस पुस्तक में भी उन्होंने रोज़ी के रूप में उनका नकारात्मक चित्रण किया। बाद के वर्षों में रोज़ालिंड के सहयोगियों और तमाम स्त्रीवादियों द्वारा वॉट्सन के चित्रण की भर्त्सना भी की गई। यह पुस्तक बीसवीं सदी के विज्ञान साहित्य की सर्वश्रेष्ठ पुस्तकों में गिनी जाती है। इसकी सीधी-सपाट भाषा प्रयोगशालाओं और वैज्ञानिकों के बीच के बौद्धिक सम्बन्धों की परम्परागत तसवीर को पूरी तरह खंडित करती है और दर्शाती है कि वैज्ञानिक भी मनुष्य हैं—ईर्ष्या, अभिलाषाओं और कुंठाओं से भरे मनुष्य। भारत में यह पुस्तक पहली बार 2003 में हिन्दी में प्रकाशित हुई और अपने विशेष महत्त्व के कारण आज भी पाठकों की प्रिय बनी हुई है।

- Description: इस पुस्तक में संकलित महाकोशल अंचल की लोककथाओं को मध्य प्रदेश के मंडला, सिवनी, बालाघाट, बिलासपुर एवं रायपुर ज़िलों और रीवा, कवर्धा, सारंगढ़ और बस्तर से एकत्र किया गया है। इन कहानियों को स्थानीय जनजातियों के लोगों से सुनकर और बातचीत कर यहाँ लिपिबद्ध किया गया है। मध्यवर्ती भारत में प्रचलित कहानियों के अनेक रूप हैं। इनमें से कुछ को हम गद्य कह सकते हैं—सीधे–सीधे विवरण जिन्हें संकेतों और भंगिमाओं के माध्यम से सुनाया गया, फिर भी उनमें कोई विशेष परिवर्तन नहीं आया। कुछ कहानियों में संवादों के अंशों को गाकर बताया गया था। सूक्तियाँ या पद्य लयबद्ध सरल धुनों में गाई गई थीं। किसी–किसी कहानी में सभी संवाद संगीत में नहीं थे। कुछ विशेष पद्य और भाव ही संगीत में थे। यह जानना दिलचस्प होगा कि कहानी का गाया हुआ अंश कहानी के साथ जुड़ा ही रहा जिससे इन कहानियों की आत्मीयता बनी रही। प्रस्तुत पुस्तक आदिवासियों की कहानियों के ज़रिए हमें उनके नज़दीक ले जाती है। आदिवासियों के विभिन्न संस्कारों के साथ–साथ उनकी मासूमियत और भोलापन भी हमें इन कहानियों में देखने को मिलता है। इसके अलावा इस पुस्तक को आनन्द के उद्देश्य से पढ़ा जाए तो यह और मनोरंजक तथा सरस लगेगी।

- Description: जब एशबी के मैदान में आइवनहो बेहोश होकर गिर पड़ा था और सारी दुनिया उसका परित्याग कर चुकी थी तब रेबेका ने ही अपने पिता को राज़ी किया कि आइवनहो को अपने निवास-स्थान पर ले जाए। रेबेका ने ख़ुद अपने हाथ से उसके घावों पर पट्टियाँ बाँधीं। घर पहुँचने के बाद भी आइवनहो काफ़ी ख़ून निकल जाने के कारण देर तक बेहोश रहा। रेबेका ने कहा कि घाव गहरे नहीं हैं और अगर बुख़ार नहीं आया तो यार्क की यात्रा नुक़सानदेह नहीं होगी। आइज़क ज़्यादा-से-ज़्यादा वहीं अच्छा होने के लिए छोड़ जाना चाहता था, लेकिन रेबेका ने उसको अपने साथ ले जाने के लिए दो तर्क दिए। एक तो वह अपने बहुमूल्य मरहम की शीशी को किसी दूसरे चिकित्सक को नहीं दे सकती। दूसरे, घायल नाइट आइवनहो का विल्फ्रेड सिंह-हृदय रिचर्ड का घनिष्ठ मित्र है और चूँकि आइज़क ने उसके भाई जॉन को विद्रोहपूर्ण कार्यों के लिए काफ़ी पैसा दिया है, इसलिए उसको रिचर्ड के लौटने पर ऐसे शक्तिशाली संरक्षकों की ज़रूरत पड़ेगी। काले नाइट ने कहा, "एक कुलीन महिला का सम्मान ख़तरे में है।" भले रिसालेदार ने कहा, "बेचारे वफ़ादार मसखरे वाम्बा का बाल भी बाँका हुआ तो मैं ईंट-से-ईंट बजा दूँगा !" काले नाइट ने लाक्सले से कहा, "यह अच्छा हो कि सेड्रिक इस हमले का नेतृत्व करे।" लेकिन सेड्रिक ने युद्ध-कौशल में अनभिज्ञता प्रकट करते हुए कहा कि वह अगली पंक्ति में ज़रूर रहेगा, पर नेतृत्व करना उसके वश का नहीं है। लाक्सले ने तीरन्दाज़ों का दिग्दर्शन करने का काम अपने ऊपर लिया। फिर काले नाइट को इस सेना का सूत्र सँभालना पड़ा और पहला हमला शुरू हो गया। सर वाल्टर स्कार्ट का प्रसिद्ध ऐतिहासिक उपन्यास है ‘आइवानहो’।

- Description: ‘हरित नोङ्जाबी’ महाराज कुमारी बिनोदिनी देवी का बहुचर्चित नाटक है जिसकी सिर्फ उनके लेखन में नहीं अपितु आधुनिक मणिपुरी साहित्य में उल्लेखनीय स्थान है। ‘नोङ्जाबी’ शब्द का आशय वर्षा ऋतु में दिखाई देने वाले ताम्रवर्णी आभा से युक्त उन बादलों से है जिन्हें वर्षा ऋतु के विराम ले लेने का संकेत माना जाता है। वस्तुत: नोङ्बाजी का शाब्दिक अर्थ है—वर्षा या बादल का भक्षक जिसका प्रयोग लेखक ने प्रेम को खा जाने वाले समय और समाज को रूपायित करने के लिए किया है। बिनोदिनी इस नाटक में उस प्रतिगामिता को उजागर करती हैं जो न केवल प्रेम को बल्कि कला को भी हेय सिद्ध करने रीति-नीतियों का समर्थन करती है, और जीवन के प्रति रचनात्मक दृष्टि को हतोत्साहित करती हुई मनुष्य की रचनात्मकता को निरे उत्पादन में जोत देना चाहती है। इसके अलावा इस संकलन में दो रेडियो नाटक भी संकलित हैं जिनमें मणिपुरी समाज की स्थानीय परिस्थितियों, आकांक्षाओं और सपनों को कुशलतापूर्वक चित्रित किया गया है। हिन्दी में इन्हें प्रस्तुत करते हुए विशेष रूप से यह ध्यान में रखा गया है कि वे शब्द जो मणिपुरी जीवन व भाषा का आस्वाद हम तक पहुँचाते हैं, उन्हें जस-का-तस रखा जाए; और उनके अर्थ दे दिए गए हैं। सुरुचिपूर्ण ढंग से लिखित और उतनी ही सजगता से अनूदित मणिपुरी साहित्य की ये प्रतिनिधि रचनाएँ हिन्दी पाठकों को महत्त्वपूर्ण लगेंगी, ऐसा हमारा विश्वास है।
