बीसवीं सदी के आठवें दशक में आइसलैंड के कवियों का एक ऐसा समर्थ और महत्त्‍वपूर्ण दल उभरकर सामने आया जिसने वहाँ के कविता संसार में भाषा, बिम्‍ब एवं शिल्‍प के स्‍तर पर बहुत कुछ बदला। सिगुरदुर पॉलसन इसी दल के कवियों में से एक थे। इस दल के कवि अपने आप को ‘पोयट्स लॉरिएट विदाउट लॉरेल’ अर्थात् ‘जयपत्र विहीन राजकवि’ कहते थे। अपने पहले काव्‍य-संग्रह 'पोयम्‍स प्‍ले एट सी-सा' से ही सिगुरदुर पॉलसन ने एक ऐसे सम्भावनाशील युवा कवि के रूप में ख्‍याति अर्जित की, जिसके पास शब्‍दों की असाधारण सम्‍पदा थी और उसके साथ ही थी उनसे खेलने की अप्रितम प्रतिभा। जीवन अपने सम्‍पूर्ण प्राकृतिक सौन्‍दर्य के साथ उसके पास था जिसे वह ‘अभी’ में जीता था—अतीत और भविष्‍य से परे। पॉलसन की कविताओं में ताज़गी है, रचनात्‍मक ऊर्जा है, जीवन के प्रति अगाध अनुराग है। लेकिन इसके साथ ही है समाज में व्‍याप्‍त बुर्जुआ ठहराव के प्रति एक बेचैनी। वे उन लोगों से क़तई सहमत नहीं, जो पाप और दु:ख को, जीवन के सुखों को, जीवन के अस्तित्‍व का सार मानते हैं और जीवन में सुखों को नकारते हैं। सिगुरदुर पॉलसन की शिक्षा-‍दीक्षा पेरिस में हुई और कुछ-कुछ अन्तराल पर वे पन्‍द्रह वर्ष वहाँ रहे और नाटकों का अध्‍यापन करते रहे। पेरिस के साथ उनके युवा जीवन की विभिन्‍न स्‍मृतियाँ बहुत गहराई से जुड़ी हैं। यही वजह है कि उनकी कविताओं में पेरिस में बिताया गया समय बार-बार आकर जीवन्‍त हो जाता है।

The novel is about two lovers cum friends, Nihal and Bhoomi, who leave their houses searching for fulfilment. They both have a dream. Nihal wants to win a gold medal in Mega events on an international platform, whereas Bhoomi intends to search for her biological parents as an adopted child. Both of them meet at a certain point and fall in love, and decide to get married even after the divine forces have declined their match. Along with this runs a parallel story of Antra and Apurva, who come from different backgrounds. They also fall in love with their terms for getting married. The story is full of magic realism where God and human beings, myth and reality, participate collectively in a specific direction. The attempt here is to experiment with the phrase: Everything will be alright. Humans tend to say to each other, "Don’t worry, Everything will be alright,” in our sheer exuberance, we keep challenging the unseen forces represented by God. The question that the novel poses before the reader is, “Can everything be alright?” Moreover, the intervention of God or Nature at various places is symbolic in asserting that human beings should not try to behave like the Lord of the Universe.

August 11. Divyanagar. The Crime Bureau is rocked with a chilling double murder. Detective Hina and her team of sleuths are on the case. वैशालीनामा सुदूर अतीत की पृष्ठभूमि में ऐसी एक कथा प्रस्तुत करता है जो न केवल रोचक है बल्कि जिसमें निहित मूल्यबोध तत्कालीन देशकाल में जितना युग-परिवर्तक हो सकता था, उससे कम परिवर्तनकारी और प्रासंगिक वह आज भी नहीं है। वह मूल्यबोध है मनुष्यमात्र की समानता का। यह समानता ऐसी किसी व्यवस्था में सम्भव नहीं हो सकती जिसका आधार स्वयं असमानता पर टिका हो। एक लोकतांत्रिक व्यवस्था ही यह सम्भव कर सकती है। वैशाली को लोकतंत्र की जन्मस्थली माना जाता है। इतिहास ही नहीं, इसके पौराणिक सन्दर्भ भी मिलते हैं। लेखक ने इस उपन्यास के लिए एक पौराणिक आख्यान को आधार बनाया है और वर्णों के श्रेणीक्रम में विभाजित समाज की सतह के नीचे खदबदाते उस लावे पर रोशनी डाली है जो मुट्ठीभर उच्चस्थों के वर्चस्व से उत्पीड़ित अधिसंख्य जनों के क्षोभ और क्रोध से निर्मित है। स्पष्टतः यह किसी पूर्ववर्णित आख्यान का औपन्यासिक रूपान्तर मात्र नहीं है। लेखकीय कल्पना का इसमें पर्याप्त निवेश हुआ है जिसके जरिये यह कृति राजतंत्र के प्राचीन युग में समाज में व्याप्त असमानता और उसके विरुद्ध हुई प्रतिक्रिया का उल्लेख कर लोकतंत्र के आदि रूप को रेखांकित करता है और किसी ऐतिहासिकता का दावा किये बिना एक समानता पर आधारित समाज का आह्वान करता है।

‘रेत’ ऐसे दुर्दम्य समाज की कथा है जिसकी परम्पराओं पर हम सहजता से विश्वास नहीं कर सकते। यह उपन्यास कंजर जनजाति की आस्था, धार्मिक विश्वास, समाज, संस्कृति का आईना है। उपन्यास ‘रेत’ के केन्द्र में कमला सदन है जहाँ एक ही घर की चौहद्दी में एक साथ दो अन्तर्विरोधी परम्पराएँ आमने-सामने टकरा रही हैं। खेलावड़ी (वेश्यावृत्ति) के पेशे के साथ कमला बुआ, सुशीला, माया, रुकमणि, वंदना और पूनम एक ही घर में सन्‍तो और अनीता भाभी, यानी विधिवत् विवाह के बाद भाभी कही जानेवाली पतिव्रताओं के साथ रहती हैं। कमला बुआ उपन्यास में मातृसत्तात्मक वर्चस्व की प्रतीक है और ‘भाभी’ ब्याहता होते हुए भी बाहर से लाई गई दोयम दर्जे की सदस्या। मोरवाल का यह उपन्यास अद्भुत क़‍िस्सागोई के साथ ही हिन्दी में नारी-विमर्श का सूत्रपात करता है। प्रकाशन के बाद से ही विवादों के केन्द्र में रहे ‘रेत’ उपन्यास में कंजर जनजाति (काननचर जनजाति) के लोक विश्वासों, प्रथाओं, जीवन-शैली और परम्पराओं का सटीक और दिलचस्पप विवरण है। जरायम पेशा और कथित सभ्य समाज के मध्य गड़ी यौन-शुचिताओं का अतिक्रमण करता यह उपन्यास आज भी अपनी विलक्षण छवि बनाए हुए है।

Raghuvar Prasad teaches Mathematics at a local college. He lives in a one-room rental eight miles away from his place of work. He travels to work by jitney, cramming into whatever space is left by other passengers, milk cans, winter blankets and vegetable baskets. The mode of transportation is unreliable; jitneys won't stop for him when they are full. A sadhu atop an elephant befriends him, offering him a ride to the college on his elephant. The Head of the Mathematics Department suggests that Raghuvar Prasad borrow the bicycle which seems to have been abandoned on the college verandah. Raghuvar Prasad tries these variations and wonders whether he shouldn't move closer to the college to save on travel costs. He has just been married. The day his wife Sonsi, arrives in town to begin their domestic life together, Raghuvar Prasad happens to come home mounted on an elephant. She imagines elephants are part of Raghuvar Prasad's usual lifestyle. Vinod Kumar Shukla's apparently slight novel reaches into the depths of feeling Raghuvar Prasad and Sonsi have for one another and for the world of lower-middle-class neighbours among whom they belong. Their possessions are meagre: the single room barely accommodates their bed, the water pot, the kitchen utensils and the tin box in which Sonsi keeps her precious things. But there is a magical place beyond the window that sustains Raghuvar Prasad's and Sonsi's spirit. This window lived in a wall.

प्रस्तुत उपन्यास में सुशीतल चटर्जी और अल्का नायर का प्रेम है जो सुशीतल के संयमित और प्रतिज्ञाबद्ध विद्यार्थी जीवन से आरम्भ होकर सुशीतल के पक्के जुआरी और शराबी होने तक जाता है, और दूसरी तरफ़ अल्का के एक मान की ऊँची छवि में स्थापित होने तक जो सुशीतल की दूसरी पत्नी से हुए बेटे की पढाई पर अपने जमा पैसे बिना हिचक खर्च कर देती है। दूसरा चरण सरपति राय के ख़ानदान का क़िस्सा है जो पुनः स्त्री-पुरुष सम्बन्ध के झोंकों में ही झूल जाता है। तीसरे उपन्यास में कुसमिया है—एक ईमानदार और सेवा-भाव से सम्पन्न सेविका जिसे अन्त में अपनी मालकिन के बेटे के ख़ून के इल्ज़ाम में फाँसी की सज़ा होती है। ‘विषय नर-नारी’ में बिमल मित्र ने जैसे लेखक होने की अपनी पहचान को भी बार-बार रेखांकित किया और जिया है। स्वतंत्र रूप से लेखन को ही अपना जीवन-ध्येय बनानेवाले उस ज़माने के ऐसे लेखकों की रचनाएँ स्वयं लेखन की प्रतिष्ठा हैं जिससे जनसाधारण पाठक के रूप में एक सजीव उपस्थिति की तरह जुड़ा रहता था। इस लिहाज़ से भी साहित्य की थाती में सुरक्षित ऐसी रचनाओं को पढ़ा जाना चाहिए।

“मैं अपनी तरफ़ से इस कहानी में कहानी भी नहीं जोड़ सकता था। इसीलिए इस कहानी में आपको हदें भी दिखाई देंगी और सरहदें भी। नफ़रतों की आग में मोहब्बत के छींटे दिखाई देंगे। सपने दिखाई देंगे तो उनका टूटना भी।...और इन सबके पीछे दिखाई देगी सियासत की काली स्याह दीवार। हिन्दुस्तान की आज़ादी को जिसने निगल लिया। जिसने राज को कभी भी सु-राज नहीं होने दिया। जिसे हम रोज़ झंडे और पहिए के पीछे ढूँढ़ते रहे कि आख़िर उसका निशान कहाँ है? गाँव मदरसा ख़ुर्द और लछमनपुर कलाँ महज़ दो गाँव-भर नहीं हैं और अली ज़ामिन खाँ और मुस्लिम मियाँ की अदावत बस दो ख़ालाज़ाद भाइयों की अदावत नहीं है। ये तो मुझे मुल्कों की अदावत की तरह दिखाई देती है, जिसमें कभी एक का पलड़ा झुकता दिखाई देता है तो कभी दूसरे का और जिसमें न कोई हारता है, न कोई जीतता है। बस, बाक़ी रह जाता है नफ़रत का एक सिलसिला... “मैं शुक्रगुज़ार हूँ उस नीम के पेड़ का जिसने मुल्क को टुकड़े होते हुए भी देखा और आज़ादी के सपनों को टूटे हुए भी देखा। उसका दर्द बस इतना है कि वह इन सबके बीच मोहब्बत और सुकून की तलाश करता फिर रहा है।”
