- Description: सुपरिचित कथाकार हृदयेश ने इस उपन्यास में एक छोटे-से शहर की धड़कती ज़िन्दगी को केन्द्र बनाकर हत्या जैसे कृत्य के बहुआयामी चित्र प्रस्तुत किए हैं। शिवनारायण एक आदर्शवादी व्यक्ति है, और है शहर का एक नामी गुंडा चुन्नू जो मोहल्ले और शहर के निरीह लोगों पर जोर-जुल्म करता है। शिवनारायण उसकी इन हरकतों पर उत्तेजित होकर, उसके साथ कोई व्यक्तिगत शत्रुता न होते हुए भी, एक दिन उसकी हत्या कर देता है। मुक़दमा चलता है और अन्ततः शिवनारायण को फाँसी की सज़ा होती है। इस सारी प्रक्रिया में न केवल क़ानून का वास्तविक रूप उजागर होता है बल्कि हत्या के अनेक पहलू उभरकर सामने आते हैं। क़ानून की नज़र में हत्या सिर्फ़ एक आदमी के प्राण ले लेना है, जबकि हत्या व्यक्ति के चरित्र की, उज्ज्वल सम्भावनाओं की, अभिव्यक्ति पाने के लिए छटपटाती प्रतिभा की भी होती है। लेकिन समाज के कर्णधारों, सत्ता में बैठे लोगों और क़ानून के लिए हत्या के ये रूप चिन्तनीय नहीं हैं। ‘हत्या’ उपन्यास में लेखक ने इन सब पहलुओं को प्रभावशाली ढंग से चित्रित किया है।

- Description: बिट्टो अपनी माँ लाजो के जीवन और समय को समझने की यात्रा पर निकली है, जिनकी पत्थर मारकर हत्या कर दी गई है। बिट्टो के स्कूली दोस्तों का एक समूह है जहाँ भिन्न धार्मिक पहचान रखनेवाले ‘दोस्त’ समूह से बाहर खदेड़ दिए गए हैं; और बिट्टो जो इस बँटवारे के ख़िलाफ़ है, उससे पूछा जा रहा है कि “सू, हमेशा गुस्से में क्यों रहती है आजकल तू?” यह रोमान के ख़त्म होने और उसके कॉम्प्लिकेटेड होते जाने का भी आख्यान है। ‘सरकफंदा’ विभाजन की डरावनी निरन्तरता के बारे में है, जहाँ लोग देश से प्यार का दम तो भरते हैं लेकिन आपसी बन्धुत्व की भावना को ख़त्म करने में लगे हैं। ‘सरकफंदा’ का एक सिरा गुलाम भारत में खुलता है दूसरा निपट वर्तमान में। दोनों के बीच वह भविष्य है जिस पर यह कसता ही जा रहा है। इस उपन्यास में बिल्ला उर्फ़ लाइब्रेरियन एक अद्भुत रूपक और रिलीफ़ की तरह उपस्थित है जो अतीत और वर्तमान, भ्रम और ज्ञान के सरकफंदे के बीच निर्लिप्त आवाजाही रखता है और वर्तमान पर क़ाबिज़ घातक परछाइयों के बीच अपने खेल से जीवन की स्वाभाविकता को राह दिखलाता चलता है। लाजो और बिट्टो का सिनेमची होना भी वह दूरी सम्भव करता है कि घट रहे को उसके घटाटोप से ज़रा दूर होकर देखा जा सके। हमारे समय के यथार्थ की सघन, आवेग-भरी, कलात्मक दुनिया।

छाको एक धुरी है, जिस पर घूम रही है एक भरी-पूरी दुनिया। एक समूची क़ौम की ज़ेहनियत और ज़िन्दगी। बीच में जो विभाजन की रेखा दिखाई देती है, वह हिन्दुस्तान और पाकिस्तान के बीच से होती हुई दोनों देशों के शासकवर्ग और जनता के वर्ग-हितों की भी सुस्पष्ट पहचान कराती है, और अन्तत: मनुष्य के अस्तित्व के प्रश्न में बदल जाती है।
मिट्टी की गन्ध जिस तरह से पूरी कृति में समाई हुई है, उसके आगे देश-प्रेम की भारी-भरकम शब्दावली वाली कितनी ही परिभाषाएँ बेकार हैं। सरहदों और सीमाओं में बँधी नागरिकता का एक प्रति-विमर्श रचते हुए यह उपन्यास ज़िन्दगी और ज़मीन के कहीं गहरे, लगभग शाश्वत रिश्ते की ओर इशारा करता है। यही वह रिश्ता है जो आख़िरकार मानव-सभ्यता के विकास का बीज बनता है।
‘एक चूहे की मौत’ जैसे अत्यन्त लोकप्रिय उपन्यास के लेखक का यह उपन्यास नागरिकता और देश की मौजूदा बहसों के सन्दर्भ में और भी प्रासंगिक हो जाता है।

This haunting autobiographical novel spans about 60 years of history, reflecting on themes of memory, nostalgia, hardship, dreams, and numbness. It concludes with a monologue: "Forgive me, the representative of the new generation of Athiranippadam, forgive me for trespassing into your land, and consider me merely an antique collector, a non-native!"
