- Description: उषा प्रियम्वदा का यह उपन्यास एक लम्बे दिवास्वप्न की तरह है जिसमें तिलिस्मी, चमत्कारी अनुभवों के साथ-साथ अनपेक्षित घटनाएँ भी पात्रों के जीवन से जुड़ी हुई हैं। एक ओर यह मृत्यु के कगार पर खड़े परिपक्व व्यक्ति की तर्क विरुद्ध, असंगत, अपने से उम्र में आधी युवती के प्यार में आकंठ डूब जाने की कहानी है पर साथ-साथ एक अविकसित, अप्रस्फुटित, अव्यावहारिक स्त्री के सजग, सतर्क और स्वयंसिद्ध होने की भी यात्रा है। यात्रा का बिम्ब उषा प्रियम्वदा के हर उपन्यास में मौजूद है। चाहे वह कैंसर से उबरने की यात्रा हो या अपने से विलग हुई सन्तान के लौटने तक की। इस उपन्यास की कथा भी प्रमुख स्त्री पात्र की स्वयं चेतन, स्वयं सजग और स्वयं जीवन-निर्णय लेने तक की यात्रा है, और लेखिका के हर उपन्यास की तरह कहानी अन्तिम पृष्ठ पर समाप्त नहीं होती, बल्कि पाठक के मन में अपने अनुसार समाप्ति तक चलती रहती है। इस उपन्यास में प्रवास, इतिहास और साहित्य तीन धाराओं की तरह जुड़ा हुआ है, और लेखिका ने पठनीयता के साथ-साथ पाठक को गम्भीरता से अपना जीवन विश्लेषण करने की ओर प्रेरित किया है। ‘अल्पविराम’ एक प्रेम कथा है। बाकी वृत्तान्त एक चौखटा है, एक फ्रेम। परन्तु फ्रेम के बिना तस्वीर अधूरी है। इसी प्रकार प्रेम कहानी प्रवाल के बिना अपूर्ण है।
