काव्य के इतिहास के प्रसंग में और विशेष रूप से
प्राचीन और मध्यकालीन काव्यधाराओं के परिचय में कवि-परिचय के साथ-साथ उसकी विशिष्टताओं को स्पष्ट करने के लिए काव्य की कुछ पंक्तियाँ भी उदाहरणस्वरूप दी गई हैं। इससे जहाँ एक ओर तथ्यात्मक विवरण की नीरसता दूर हो जाती है, वहीं दूसरी ओर काव्य-युगों को समझने में भी सुविधा होती है।

मध्यकालीन साहित्य के विश्रुत विद्वान डॉ. भगीरथ मिश्र ने इस छोटी-सी पुस्तक में हिन्दी-काव्य की एक अत्यन्त वेगवती धारा का सर्वांगीण अध्ययन प्रस्तुत किया है। इस काव्यधारा की पृष्ठभूमि के रूप में उन्होंने लोक-भाषा की परम्परा, रीति-साहित्य के विकास के कारणों और तत्कालीन राजनीतिक-सामाजिक परिस्थितियों पर विस्तार से विचार किया है। सामान्यतः इस काव्यधारा पर जो दोष लगाए जाते हैं, उन पर क्रमबद्ध रूप से विचार करते हुए निष्कर्ष रूप में कहा है कि ‘उस समय रीति साहित्य का बँधी-बँधाई परिपाटी पर विकास, रूढ़िवादिता नहीं वरन् अतिशय राजप्रशंसा से मुक्ति पाने और शुद्ध काव्य लिखने के उद्देश्य को पूरा करनेवाला है।’ और ‘हिन्दी-रीति साहित्य का जिन परिस्थितियों में विकास हुआ उनका पूरा प्रभाव आत्मसात् करके भी इस साहित्य की अपनी सांस्कृतिक और सामाजिक देन है।’
लेखक का मानना है कि हमें ‘रीति-साहित्य’ को संकीर्णता से नहीं बल्कि साहित्यिक उदारता से देखना चाहिए जिससे केवल आम और अमरूद की उपयोगिता से प्रभावित लोगों के लिए बिहारी को फिर यह न कहना पड़े कि :
‘फूल्यो अनफूल्यो रह्यो गँवई गाँव गुलाब।’
पृष्ठभूमि के उपरान्त डॉ. मिश्र ने ‘रीति’ के तात्पर्य, रीतिशास्त्र की परम्परा और उसके आधार को स्पष्ट करते हुए अलंकार सम्प्रदाय, रस सम्प्रदाय और ध्वनि सम्प्रदाय के इतिहास और सिद्धान्त पर भी विस्तार से विचार किया है। साथ ही, इन सम्प्रदायों के विभिन्न आचार्यों और उनके योगदान का समुचित मूल्यांकन किया है।
पुस्तक के अन्त में रीति-काव्य धारा के नौ प्रमुख कवियों का काव्य-चयन है। उपरोक्त सम्पूर्ण विवेचन के सन्दर्भ में इस काव्य को पढ़ना पाठकों के लिए रुचिकर अनुभव होगा। इस प्रकार सिद्धान्त और व्यवहार की समवेत प्रस्तुति के रूप में यह पुस्तक हिन्दी रीति-साहित्य का सांगोपांग इतिहास ही है, जो साहित्य के विद्यार्थियों के लिए तो उपयोगी है ही, सन्दर्भ-ग्रन्थों के विस्तृत उल्लेख से विद्वानों के लिए भी समान रूप से उपयोगी हो गई है।
