ऐनी फ्रैंक ने जिस अटारी में अपने जीवन के अंतिम वर्ष बिताए, वहाँ से मिली उनकी चर्चित डायरी एक विश्वप्रसिद्ध रचना बन गई। यह युद्ध की भयावहता की प्रभावशाली ढंग से याद दिलाती है और इनसानी उत्साह और जिजीविषा का स्पष्ट प्रमाण देती है। 1942 में जब नाजियों ने हॉलैंड पर कब्जा कर लिया, तब तेरह साल की एक यहूदी लडक़ी और उसका परिवार एम्सटर्डम में अपने घर से भागकर कहीं छिप गया। अगले दो वर्षों तक, जब तक धोखे से उनके ठिकाने के बारे में खुफिया नाजी पुलिस को जानकारी नहीं हो गई, तब तक एक अन्य परिवार के साथ वे एक पुराने कार्यालय भवन के गुप्त हिस्से में रहते थे। बाहरी दुनिया से कटे हुए, उन्होंने भूख, ऊब, तंग जगह में रहने की क्रूरता और ढूँढ़ निकाले जाने के साथ ही मौत के हमेशा मँडराते खतरे का सामना किया था। ऐनी फ्रैंक ने अपनी डायरी में इस अवधि के दौरान अपने अनुभवों को जीवंत रूप में दर्ज किया है। विचारशील, भावपूर्ण और रोचक रूप मेें उनका वर्णन मानवी साहस और कमजोरियों पर विचारवान टिप्पणी है, जो एक संवेदनशील एवं उत्साही युवा महिला के सम्मोहक आत्म-चित्रण को प्रस्तुत करती है, जिससे किया गया वादा दुखद रूप से बहुत जल्दी तोड़ दिया गया।
