- Description: किसी कहानी को लोकप्रिय तो पाठक ही बनाता है। जो रचना पाठकों द्वारा पढ़ी ही न जाए, वह लोकप्रिय नहीं होती। किंतु इसका अर्थ यह नहीं है कि जो रचना लेखक को प्रिय न हो, पाठक उसे लोकप्रिय बना देगा। वस्तुतः कहानियाँ लेखक और पाठक दोनों की रुचि से लोकप्रिय बनती हैं। मैंने 1960-70 के दौर में कहानियाँ लिखी थीं। तब तक वे उपन्यास नहीं लिखे गए थे, जिन्होंने अपनी लोकप्रियता के बल पर कहानियों की चर्चा को मंद कर दिया है। इसके पश्चात् उपन्यासों ने कहानियों को अपना अंग ही बना लिया। लिखने को तो अब भी कहानी लिखने बैठ जाता हूँ, लिख भी लेता हूँ, किंतु मेरे लेखन के केंद्र में कहानी नहीं है। फिर भी कह सकता हूँ कि ‘परिणति’, ‘नमक का कैदी’, ‘संचित भूख’, ‘किरचे’, ‘निचले फ्लैट में’ और ‘नींद आने तक’ जैसी कहानियाँ न मुझसे भुलाई गई हैं और न पाठकों द्वारा उनकी उपेक्षा की स्थिति आई है। यदा-कदा उनकी चर्चा होती ही रहती है। वह मेरी किशोरावस्था थी। उसमें समाज के प्रति दायित्वबोध भी था और प्रेम का आकर्षण भी। उनमें मेरे भाई-बहन भी हैं और मेरी सखियाँ भी। वह जीवन का वह महत्त्वपूर्ण मोड़ था, जिसे भुलाना संभव नहीं है। परिणामतः आज आधी शताब्दी के पश्चात् भी वे कहानियाँ मुझे प्रिय हैं। —नरेंद्र कोहली

- Description: मनुवादी व्यवस्था में सदियों से पिसते, शूद्र-अतिशूद्र की श्रेणी में डाले गए लोगों को अभिव्यक्ति का अवसर मिला तो उन्होंने भावपूर्ण रचनाएँ कीं। मध्यकाल के अनेक सन्त कवियों, ख़ासतौर से निर्गुण कवियों ने जात-पाँत के भेदभाव के विरोध में आवाज़ उठाई। जोतिबा फुले ने उन्नीसवीं सदी में दलित समाज को ‘ग़ुलामगीरी’ की पहचान कराई, ‘सत्यशोधक’ बनने का सपना दिया। बाबा साहब आंबेडकर ने बीसवीं सदी में उनमें जागृति की नई चेतना पैदा की और इसी चेतना से पढ़े-लिखे दलित समाज ने अपने दमन-शोषण और उपेक्षा को अपनी रचनाओं के माध्यम से अभिव्यक्त किया। मराठी आदि भाषाओं से होते हुए नई दलित रचनाशीलता सभी भाषाओं में प्रस्फुटित हुई। इस रचनाशीलता के विकास के लिए जब ख़ुद दलित रचनाकार अपने साहित्य की परख के लिए सौन्दर्यशास्त्र रचने की कोशिश में प्रवृत्त हुए तो लगा कि ज़रूरत सिर्फ़ दलित साहित्य के लिए ही सौन्दर्यशास्त्र रचने की नहीं है बल्कि जो नया नज़रिया जोतिबा फुले और आंबेडकर ने हमारे समाज को दिया है, उससे एक सार्वभौमिक ‘दलित सौन्दर्यशास्त्र’ की वैचारिकी गढ़ी जानी चाहिए। इस पुस्तक का आधार यही विचार है। इसमें जिस सौन्दर्यशास्त्र को गढ़ने का प्रयास किया गया है, वह सिर्फ़ दलित साहित्य का नहीं, समूचे साहित्य पर लागू होने वाला दलित सौन्दर्यशास्त्र है।

साहित्य में मंज़रनामा एक मुकम्मिल फ़ॉर्म है। यह एक ऐसी विधा है जिसे पाठक बिना किसी रुकावट के रचना का मूल आस्वाद लेते हुए पढ़ सके। लेकिन मंज़रनामा का अन्दाज़े-बयान अमूमन मूल रचना से अलग हो जाता है या यूँ कहें कि वह मूल रचना का इन्टरप्रेटेशन हो जाता है।
मंज़रनामा पेश करने का एक उद्देश्य तो यह है कि पाठक इस फ़ॉर्म से रूबरू हो सकें और दूसरा यह कि टी.वी. और सिनेमा में दिलचस्पी रखनेवाले लोग यह देख-जान सकें कि किसी कृति को किस तरह मंज़रनामे की शक्ल दी जाती है। टी.वी. की आमद से मंज़रनामों की ज़रूरत में बहुत इज़ाफ़ा हो गया है।
कथाकार, शायर, गीतकार, पटकथाकार गुलज़ार ने लीक से हटकर शरतचन्द्र की-सी संवेदनात्मक मार्मिकता, सहानुभूति और करुणा से ओत-प्रोत कई उम्दा फ़िल्मों का निर्देशन किया, जिनमें ‘मेरे अपने’, ‘अचानक’, ‘परिचय’, ‘आँधी’, ‘मौसम’, ‘ख़ुशबू’, ‘मीरा’, ‘किनारा’, ‘नमकीन’, ‘लेकिन’, ‘लिबास’, और ‘माचिस’ जैसी फ़िल्में शामिल हैं।
अपने समय की बेहद चर्चित फ़िल्म ‘आँधी’ का यह मंज़रनामा वरिष्ठ साहित्यकार कमलेश्वर के उपन्यास ‘काली आँधी’ से कुछ अलग भी है और नहीं भी। फ़िल्म में किरदारों के एटिट्यूड उपन्यास से अलग हैं। इसमें राजनीति के छल-छद्मों से भरी कथावस्तु के बीच दो दिलों के प्रेम की अन्तःसलिल धारा भी बह रही है जो पाठकों की संवेदना को छू लेती है।
यह पुस्तक पूरी फ़िल्म की एक तरह से औपन्यासिक प्रस्तुति है जो पाठकों की अपेक्षाओं पर खरा उतरेगी।
