Born on 14 July 1936, Jeelani Bano was a prolific Urdu fiction writer who began her literary career in 1950 with the short story Mom ki Maryam published in the leading literary magazine Adab-e-Latif. Marked by a sharp gender consciousness, her writings explore the social and cultural upheavals of postcolonial India. Her story Narsayya Ki Bavdi was adapted into Shyam Benegal’s 2009 film Well Done Abba. Recognizing her literary contributions, she was awarded the Padma Shri in 2001. She passed away in March 2026, leaving behind a substantial body of literary works.
