• Description: Adorations of the Ancients is a comprehensive English translation of all 19 stories of Vaddaradhane in one volume. The stories herein constitute the earliest prose writing in 10th-century Halagannada. At the outset, these tales appear to be dedicatedly religious, preaching ethics and morality according to the Jain order. However, as a creative endeavour, the stories operate at various levels: the realistic, the mythical, the fantastic, the quasi-historical, the worldly, the monarchical, the economic, and the socio-cultural. The characters are always embedded in various economic classes, and, curiously, seldom in caste constituencies. The woman characters appear strong and decisive. This English translation is based on R.L. Anantharamaiah’s edition of Shivakotyacharya’s Vaddaradhane. This translation attempts to contain within its limitations and scope of equivalences and approximations. This, it is believed, would make reading an act of pleasure without sacrificing their scholastic interest.
