प्रस्तुत कोश कई दृष्टियों से महत्त्वपूर्ण है। इसके लिए हिन्दी प्रदेश में निर्धारित पाँचवें दर्जे तक की सभी पाठ्य-पुस्तकें मँगवाई गईं और उनमें से शब्दों का संग्रह करवाया गया। बारम्बारता की पद्धति से तैयार की हुई शब्दावलियों को भी हस्तगत किया गया। बारम्बारता की पद्धति से तैयार की हुई शब्दावलियों को भी हस्तगत किया गया। इस प्रकार शब्दावली का एक स्तर निश्चित हुआ। इस शब्दकोश में लगभग छह हज़ार शब्द हैं जो प्राथमिक कक्षाओं के विद्यार्थियों के लिए उपयोगी और आवश्यक हैं। अर्थों का चुनाव भी इसी दृष्टि से किया गया है। सबसे बड़ी बात यह है कि प्रत्येक शब्द का प्रयोग जैसा कि शिष्ट हिन्दी में होता है, अत्यन्त सटीक उदाहरणों द्वारा समझाया गया है।
एक अन्यतम विशेषता यह भी है कि विद्यार्थियों के लिए इतना उपयोगी यह पहला सचित्र कोश है। अर्थ समझाने के लिए तीन तरीक़े बताए गए हैं। एक तो पर्यायवाची शब्द देकर, जैसे—जल (पानी), दशा (अवस्था, हालत); दूसरे, व्याख्या या वर्णन देकर, जैसे—अरबी (सूरन जैसा एक छोटा कंद), अस्पताल (इलाज करने-कराने की जगह); और तीसरे, परिभाषा देकर, जैसे—अंकगणित (गणित की वह शाखा जिसमें अंकों का जोड़ना, घटाना, गुणा करना और भाग देना आदि अनेक क्रियाओं का अध्ययन किया जाता है।) परन्तु कभी-कभी इसके बाद भी विद्यार्थी के मन में वस्तु का ठीक-ठाक ज्ञान नहीं हो पाता। समुचित ज्ञान कराने में चित्र बहुत सहायक होते हैं। हिन्दी में ऐसे सचित्र कोश नहीं हैं। प्रस्तुत कोश इस दृष्टि से बेजोड़ है।
