मानव की सामाजिक, राजनीतिक, आर्थिक, धार्मिक, सांस्कृतिक आदि सभी चेतनाओं का प्रत्यक्ष अथवा अप्रत्यक्ष रूप लोकगीतों में समाहित रहता है। दरअसल ये लोकगीत हमारे वे महत्त्वपूर्ण दस्तावेज़ हैं जिनमें साधारण से साधारण घटना को आम लोगों ने लोकगीतों के अन्दाज़ में सहजता से दर्ज किया है। अवधी, भोजपुरी, ब्रज, बुन्देली, छत्तीसगढ़ी, मैथिली, मागधी आदि लोक-गीतों में राष्ट्रीय, साहित्यिक, धार्मिक, सांस्कृतिक तथा ऐतिहासिक तत्त्व अनेकानेक परतों में परम्परागत रूप से विद्यमान हैं। इन लोकगीतों के पीछे जो मार्मिक अनुभूतियाँ एवं सजीवता भरी है, वह अन्यत्र दुर्लभ है।
भारतीय इतिहास लेखन की परम्परा में लोक एवं लोकगीत अभी हाल तक अनुपस्थित रहे हैं। चाहे उपनिवेशवादी इतिहासकार हों, राष्ट्रवादी इतिहासकार हों, मार्क्सवादी इतिहासकार हों या उपाश्रयी इतिहासकार सबके लेखन से यह प्राय: अछूता ही रहा है। इधर इतिहासकारों का एक वर्ग लोकगीतों, लोक-परम्पराओं एवं लोक-संस्कृति को अपने अध्ययन एवं लेखन का केन्द्र बना रहा है, जिससे भारतीय इतिहास के अनेक अछूते तथ्य सामने आ रहे हैं।
स्वाधीनता संग्राम की समग्र तस्वीर लोकगीतों, लोक-कथाओं, लोक-मुहावरों आदि के अध्ययन के बिना नहीं तैयार की जा सकती। अवधी, भोजपुरी, मैथिली, बुन्देली, ब्रज, छत्तीसगढ़ी, राजस्थानी आदि लोकगीतों में इसकी जो विभिन्न छवियाँ हैं इनके द्वारा स्वतंत्रता संग्राम का एक समानान्तर इतिहास लिखा जा सकता है। इस पुस्तक के माध्यम से लेखक ने यही प्रयत्न करते हुए लोकगीतों के आलोक में भारतीय स्वाधीनता संग्राम को नए परिप्रेक्ष्य में समझने की सफल कोशिश की है।

From this point of view, the existence of the power of duality cannot be denied. Just as the existence of wave in the ocean cannot be denied, the existence of the wave of duality in the ocean of the Supreme Consciousness will have to be accepted; but keeping in mind that the real existence is not that of the wave but of the ocean.
