পুরুষ কত প্রকার? পাঁচ। বীরপুরুষ, উত্তরপুরুষ, মহাপুরুষ, ল্যাদপুরুষ আর বাংলার বাঘ। বীরপুরুষ আপন আপন গৃহে দু পায়ের ফাঁকে ন্যাজ নাবিয়ে ঘোরেন। কর্মক্ষেত্রের দরজা পেরিয়ে বাঘ মশাইয়ের আত্মপ্রকাশ ঘটে। মহীন ডাক্তার এবং প্রচন্ড দারোগা এই জাতীয়। এদের কাছা কোথা থেকে টানলে খোলে জানা থাকলে, মোকাবিলা করা অত কঠিন নয়। উত্তরপুরুষেরা থাকে আয়নার অন্যদিকে। নায়িকার ধারেকাছে তেনারা ভেজা ন্যাতা, আগুনে বঝাঁপানোয় রেডি সেট গো বলে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা শ্যামা পোকা। আমাদের গল্পের হাগা আর নিক্সনকে এই জন্যেই টিকলির নাম নিয়ে যা কিছু করিয়ে নেওয়া এতই সোজা। উত্তরপুরুষেরাই কালে কালে বীরপুরুষ হন। পানু রঘু ডাকাতের সাক্ষাৎ বংশধর। জগদম্বার সংসারে তার বীরগতি প্রাপ্তি ঘটেছে। কিন্তু তাতে দমে না গিয়ে উনকি ঝুনকিতে উপগত হয়েছে। এদের দেখেই আমরা বলি ব্যাটার দম আছে। এনারা মহাপুরুষ। ল্যাদপুরুষেরা সচরাচর জীবনের পশ্চাৎপট। তারা মামুলি, পাদপূরণে নিমিত্ত বলিপ্রদত্ত। আছে কি নেই বোঝা যায় না, তাদের আত্মপ্রকাশের জন্য অনেক গ্রহ নক্ষত্রের যোগ সাজশ চাই, আর চাই লেখকের হাতের সাফাই। রাখহরি, বিফল এই দলে। বাংলার বাঘের পেডিগ্রি অন্যরকম। তারা ঘরেও সড়ষের তেল পেটে দলাই মলাই করে রোদে ছিরকুটে থাকেন। মিনিটে মিনিটে তাদের হুকুম তালিম হয়। আবার বাইরেও তাদের বিশেষ গলাবাজি চলে। তারা দিনে কালে রাজনৈতিক নেতা হন। অই, ঠিক ধরেছেন। বুদ্ধ খাসনবিশ। কিন্তু বাঘেরও টাগ থাকে।
