K S Subramanian
Dr. K.S. Subramanian (1937), from Thirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, resides in Chennai. He holds Master's degrees in Physics, History, and Business Management, as well as a Doctorate in Public Administration. He served the Government of India (IRAS) from 1960 to 1975 and the Asian Development Bank until 1998, retiring as a Director. Since returning in 1998, he has engaged in literary and social pursuits, translating over 30 Tamil works into English, including 11 novels, 7 novellas, 3 short story collections, and 7 poetry anthologies (about eighty Sangam Poems). He translated over 40% of Subramania Bharathiar’s poetic corpus for a Sahitya Akademi publication of Bharathi's complete works. His translations appear in publications by Sahitya Akademi, Macmillan, Katha, East-West Books, New Horizon, Tamil University, and the International Institute of Tamil Studies. He has presented numerous papers on notable Tamil writers like Subramania Bharathi and Na. Pichamurthy, addressing literature's relationship with society and challenges of humanism. As the compiling editor of the Jayakanthan Reader, he pioneered efforts in Tamil literary collections and published seminal articles by C. Subramaniam, the Father of India’s Green Revolution, through Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. His seven volumes of Tamil articles cover literary, social, and developmental themes. He has received multiple awards for literary translation and serves as a trustee of the National Agro Foundation and MOZHI Trust, focusing on Tamil language and culture. He is a former member of the Tamil Advisory Board of Sahitya Akademi.
