The novel Dika, which means "direction" in Konkani, tells the story of a farming family from the lower middle class. It is set in the North Kanara district of Karnataka and offers a vivid portrayal of the socio-cultural life of the region's inhabitants. The plot follows Deepak and his family as they struggle to adapt to a new way of life in their village after the sudden death of Deepak's father, a policeman. Along the way, they encounter various challenges, including problematic villagers, conniving relatives, and blind faith. When Deepak's sister falls in love with a Muslim boy, he must confront societal norms and convince his mother to accept their relationship. Ultimately, Deepak leads his family to a new and free existence, breaking free from the constraints imposed on them by society. This is best exemplified in the novel's closing scene, where Deepak witnesses a lone crow moving eastward, away from its flock, in a new direction.

- Description: कुसुम खेमानी का यह उपन्यास ‘लालबत्ती की अमृतकन्याएँ’ कथावस्तु की दृष्टि से एक साहसिक क़दम माना जा सकता है क्योंकि यह वह इलाक़ा है जिस पर लिखने से हिन्दी लेखकों की क़लम प्राय: गुरेज करती है। फिर भी इस दिशा में कुछ उल्लेखनीय कृतियाँ तो देखने को मिलती ही हैं, यह उपन्यास उसी शृंखला की नवीनतम कड़ी है। यों उपन्यास कोलकाता के ‘सोनागाछी’ पर केन्द्रित है लेकिन यह लालबत्ती गली हर शहर और हर क़स्बे में होती है और अन्त:सलिला की तरह समाज के अन्तर में बहती रहती है। समाज इन स्त्रियों को विषकन्याएँ मानता है पर दरअसल ये समाज के भीतर छिपी गन्दगी को फैलने से रोकने के साथ ही उसका परिष्करण भी करती हैं और इस बिन्दु पर आकर ये ‘विषकन्याएँ’ अमृतकन्याओं में बदल जाती हैं। उपन्यास की कथा विष से अमृत की ओर बढ़ने की संघर्ष-गाथा है क्योंकि उपन्यास की पात्र वे स्त्रियाँ हैं, जिन्हें अमृत से वंचित कर ‘विष’ की ओर ढकेल दिया गया है। उपन्यास में इन स्त्रियों की रोज़-रोज़ की प्रताड़ना, अपमान और हत्या जैसे रोंगटे खड़े कर देनेवाले प्रसंगों का चित्रण कुसुम खेमानी ने जिस भाषाई कौशल और शिल्पगत दक्षता के साथ किया है, वह देखते ही बनता है। पहला पन्ना खोलते ही उपन्यास किसी रोचक फ़िल्म की तरह हमारे सामने खुलता चला जाता है। यह बतरस शैली डॉ. कुसुम खेमानी का अपना निजी और विशिष्ट कौशल है जो पाठकों को अन्त तक बाँधे रखता है। उपन्यास की कथा में सहारा देनेवाले हाथों का सन्दर्भ ही नहीं है बल्कि इन पतिता स्त्रियों द्वारा गिरकर ख़ुद उठने और सँभलने की कोशिशों का कलात्मक मंथन भी है। ‘लावण्यदेवी’, ‘जड़िया बाई’ और ‘गाथा रामभतेरी’ जैसे उपन्यासों से गुज़रने के बाद, निस्सन्देह यहाँ यह कहा जा सकता है कि इतनी ख़ूबियों से भरा-पूरा यह उपन्यास अगर किसी का हो सकता है, तो वह सिर्फ़ कुसुम खेमानी का हो सकता है। —एकान्त श्रीवास्

- Description: सुपरिचित कथाकार हृदयेश ने इस उपन्यास में एक छोटे-से शहर की धड़कती ज़िन्दगी को केन्द्र बनाकर हत्या जैसे कृत्य के बहुआयामी चित्र प्रस्तुत किए हैं। शिवनारायण एक आदर्शवादी व्यक्ति है, और है शहर का एक नामी गुंडा चुन्नू जो मोहल्ले और शहर के निरीह लोगों पर जोर-जुल्म करता है। शिवनारायण उसकी इन हरकतों पर उत्तेजित होकर, उसके साथ कोई व्यक्तिगत शत्रुता न होते हुए भी, एक दिन उसकी हत्या कर देता है। मुक़दमा चलता है और अन्ततः शिवनारायण को फाँसी की सज़ा होती है। इस सारी प्रक्रिया में न केवल क़ानून का वास्तविक रूप उजागर होता है बल्कि हत्या के अनेक पहलू उभरकर सामने आते हैं। क़ानून की नज़र में हत्या सिर्फ़ एक आदमी के प्राण ले लेना है, जबकि हत्या व्यक्ति के चरित्र की, उज्ज्वल सम्भावनाओं की, अभिव्यक्ति पाने के लिए छटपटाती प्रतिभा की भी होती है। लेकिन समाज के कर्णधारों, सत्ता में बैठे लोगों और क़ानून के लिए हत्या के ये रूप चिन्तनीय नहीं हैं। ‘हत्या’ उपन्यास में लेखक ने इन सब पहलुओं को प्रभावशाली ढंग से चित्रित किया है।

Originally serialised in Mathrubhumi Illustrated Weekly, it was published as a book by Current Books in 1976. It tells the story of a Nambudiri woman, who is drawn into the struggle for social and political emancipation but cannot easily shake off the chains of tradition that bind her. The novel was concerned with implied criticism of aspects of social structure and behaviour. Thethikutty (Devaki or Sumitarananda) is married to Unni Nambudiri of the well-known Brahmin family named Manampilly Illam. He is young, virtuous, and loving but too orthodox to be the husband of a woman with Thethikutty's views. Feeling frustrated, Thethikutty leaves him once and forever and reaches her paternal home. Unni lives the life of a piety, is branded as an eccentric and dies. Thethikutty, meanwhile, finds no peace anywhere. At last, in the Himalayas, she meets her old friend and Unni's half-sister, the sixty-year-old Mrs K.M.K. Nair (Thankam). She finds her unborn son in Mrs. Nair's son and hands over her wedding pendant to her daughter with the request to cherish it with due regard.
