ನಾಟಕ, ಪತ್ರಿಕೋದ್ಯಮ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದ ನಂಟಿನ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಸಣ್ಣ ಕತೆಗಾರನಾಗಿ ವ್ಯಾಪಕ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಕೃಷಿ ಮಾಡಿರುವ ಸೈರಸ್ ಮಿಸ್ತ್ರಿ ಅವರ ‘ಕ್ರಾನಿಕಲ್ ಆಫ್ ಎ ಕಾರ್ಪ್ಸ್ ಬೇರರ್’ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಅನುವಾದ ಈ ಹೊತ್ತಿಗೆ.
2013ನೇ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಪಡೆದ ಈ ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಬಿ.ಆರ್.ಜಯರಾಮರಾಜೇ ಅರಸ್ ಅನುವಾದಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಪುಟ ತಿರುವಿದಂತೆ ಕಥೆಯು ಬಾಂಬೆಯಲ್ಲಿ 1942ನೇ ಇಸವಿಯ ವರ್ತಮಾನ ಕಾಲದಿಂದ ಆರಂಭವಾಗಿ ಭೂತಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಗುತ್ತಾ ಅಪೂರ್ಣ ಭವಿಷ್ಯ ಬಿಚ್ಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾ ಮುನ್ನಡೆದಿದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ‘ಎಲ್ಚಿ’ (ಫಿರೋಜ್ ಎಲ್ಚಿದಾನ) ಕಥಾನಾಯಕ. ಪಾರ್ಸಿ ಉಪಜಾತಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿದ ಅಸ್ಪೃಶ್ಯರಾದ ಹೆಣಹೊರುವವರ ಬದುಕಿನ ವೃತ್ತಾಂತ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಫಿರೋಜ್ ಸಮಾಜದ ಪ್ರಬಲ ವರ್ಗಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿದ ಪುರೋಹಿತರೊಬ್ಬನ ಮಗ. ‘ಖಾಂಧಿಯಾ’ (ಹೆಣ ಹೊರುವವರು) ಜಾತಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿದ ಸೆಪಿಡೆಹ್ (ಸೆಪ್ಪಿ) ಎಂಬುವವಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರೀತಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ಮಗಳನ್ನು ಮದುವೆಯಾಗಬೇಕಾದರೆ ಹೆಣ ಹೊರುವ ವೃತ್ತಿ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿ, ತಮ್ಮ ಜೊತೆಯೇ ಬದುಕಬೇಕು ಎನ್ನುವ ಸೆಪ್ಪಿ ತಂದೆಯ ಷರತ್ತಿಗೆ ಒಪ್ಪಿ ಆಕೆಯನ್ನು ಮದುವೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ತಂದೆ, ತಾಯಿ, ಸಮುದಾಯವನ್ನೂ ತೊರೆದು ಬರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಮಗಳ ಜನನದ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೆಪ್ಪಿ ನಿಧನ, ಎಲ್ಚಿ ಬದುಕಿಗೆ ತಿರುವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆತ, ಈ ನೋವಿನಲ್ಲೂ, ತುಳಿತಕ್ಕೊಳಗಾಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಖಾಂಧಿಯಾ ಜನರ ಬದುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬದಲಾವಣೆ ತರುವತ್ತ ಪಾರ್ಸಿ ಪಂಚಾಯತ್ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ದಂಗೆಯನ್ನೂ ಆರಂಭಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ದ್ವಿತೀಯಾರ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಥೆಯ ಈ ನಿರೂಪಣೆ ಭಾರತದ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ಸಂಗ್ರಾಮದ ಘಟನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಮಾನಾಂತರವಾಗಿ ಸಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಉಸಿರು ಬಿಗಿಹಿಡಿದು ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಓದುವಂತೆ ಪ್ರೇರೇಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಪಾರ್ಸಿ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯು ಕೃತಿಯುದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಉಸಿರಾಡಿದೆ. ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊಸತನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಕೃತಿ ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿದೆ.
