मैं तो यही कहूँगा कि वर्णाश्रम धर्म, गहरी मानवीय असमानता के प्रति हमें सहिष्णु बनाता है। यह असमानता कई अलग-अलग स्वरूपों में प्रकट होती है। इसमें शामिल हैं—आर्थिक, सामाजिक, पितृसत्ता, लैंगिकता, जाति प्रथा, आध्यात्मिक और सोच आदि की असमानता। ये एक-दूसरे को क्रमवार मजबूती देती हैं। भारतीय समाज इसके क्रूर दमन पर आधारित है। पूरी दुनिया में जिसकी कोई और मिसाल मिलना मुश्किल है।
भारत के सभी सत्ताधारी वर्णाश्रम धर्म के मौन समर्थक हैं, ऐसा नहीं है, मुझे ऐसा लगता है कि वर्णाश्रम धर्म, वर्तमान सत्ताधारी पार्टी की विचारधारा, हिन्दुत्व, का अभिन्न अंग है। इसके प्रवक्ता गोलवलकर ने साफ शब्दों में लिखा था कि वर्ण और आश्रम, समाज में हिन्दू ढाँचे की विशेषताएँ हैं।
भारत में हिन्दुत्ववादी आन्दोलन के समर्थक वर्ण, आश्रम और जाति-प्रथा के सार्वजनिक व्यख्याता और प्रशंसक हैं। अगर नरमपंथी—हिन्दू राष्ट्रवादी, वर्णाश्रम धर्म के विरोध में हैं, तो वे हिन्दुत्व के प्रखर विरोध के लिए आगे क्यों नहीं आते हैं! और समतामूलक सोच और समाज का अभियान क्यों नहीं चलाते? यह ग्रंथ और पेरियार ललई सिंह का चिन्तन इसी बात को चरितार्थ करता है।
