हिन्दी कथा-साहित्य में नारी चेतना के उन्मेष और स्त्री-अस्मिता के सन्दर्भ में जिन कथाकारों की प्रभावशाली भूमिका रही, उनमें कृष्णा सोबती का नाम बहुत आदर से लिया जाता है। वे इस अर्थ में भी विशिष्ट हैं कि उनका कथा-साहित्य स्त्री-अस्मिता से जुड़े सवालों से जूझने की नई दृष्टि और ऊर्जा देता है। उनके स्त्री-चरित्र जहाँ समाज की रूढ़ मान्यताओं, सड़े-गले क़ायदों और असंगत तौर-तरीक़ों को चुनौती देते हैं, वहीं अपनी सहज स्वतंत्रता के पक्ष में ऐसे सवाल भी खड़े करते हैं, जिनसे स्त्री के लोकतांत्रिक अधिकारों की हिमायत के साथ मानवीय सरोकारों का एक व्यापक धरातल निर्मित होता है।
‘कृष्णा सोबती की कथा-यात्रा’ पर केन्द्रित यह आलोचना कृति इस बात को विशेष रूप से रेखांकित करती है कि कृष्णाजी के रचनाकर्म को किसी ऐतिहासिक काल-खंड, भौगोलिक दायरों या सामयिक जीवन-यथार्थ के किन्हीं खास विषयों तक सीमित नहीं किया जा सकता। उनके कथा-साहित्य में हमारे समय-समाज की वास्तविकताओं और कमजोर होते पारिवारिक संबंधों के बीच स्त्री के साथ बढ़ते अमानवीय बरताव के विरुद्ध स्त्री-रचनाशीलता का जो संघर्ष उभरकर सामने आया है, वह स्त्री की भूमिका को और प्रभावशाली बनाता है।
उनके उपन्यासों में ‘डार से बिछुड़ी’ की पाशो, ‘मित्रो मरजानी’ की मित्रो, ‘सूरजमुखी अँधेरे के’ की रतिका, ‘तिन पहाड़’ की जया, ‘ज़िन्दगीनामा’ की शाहनी, चाची महरी और बिन्द्रा, ‘दिलो-दानिश’ की महक और छुन्ना, ‘ऐ लड़की’ की अम्मू और उनकी खुद्दार बेटी, ‘समय सरगम’ की आरण्या और उनकी लेखन यात्रा के अन्त में छपी कृति ‘चन्ना’ की कथानायिका चन्ना सरीखे स्त्री-चरित्र आज़ादी के बाद हिन्दी कथा-साहित्य में उभरती स्वायत्त स्त्री की जीती-जागती मिसाल हैं।
‘कृष्णा सोबती की कथा-यात्रा’ में कृष्णा सोबती की इसी संघर्षशील स्वायत्त स्त्री की छवि को उजागर करने का प्रयास किया गया है।
