The book is sensitively written, full of intimate anecdotes, not without political insight, and makes very interesting reading. It offers not only a personal viewpoint, but a glimpse into the lives of all detenus.

- Description: भारत रत्न बाबासाहब डॉ. बी.आर. आंबेडकर को भारतीयसंविधान के सिद्धांत निर्माता और दलित अधिकारों के मुर प्रवक्ता के रूप में जाना जाताहै। उन्होंने कम उम्र से ही भेदभाव का अनुभव किया, जिसका उन्होंने अपने बाद के लेखनमें स्पष्ट रूप से वर्णन किया। एक जगह वे लिखते हैं—‘‘स्कूल में रहते हुए मैं जानताथा कि जब सामान्य वर्ग के बच्चे प्यासे होते हैं, तो वे पानी के नल के पास जा सकतेहैं, उसे खोल सकते हैं और अपनी प्यास बुझा सकते हैं, लेकिन मेरी स्थिति अलग थी। मैंनल को नहीं छू सकता था और जब तक नल को कोई सामान्य जन मेरे लिए नहीं खोल देता, तब तकमेरी प्यास बुझाना संभव न था।’’ 1920 में उन्होंनेएक साप्ताहिक मराठी अखबार शुरू किया, जिसमें जातिगत भेदभाव की कड़ी आलोचना की गई। उन्होंने1937 और 1946 में अंग्रेजों द्वारा दिए गए चुनाव लड़ने के लिए दो राजनीतिक दलों कीस्थापना की, हालाँकि इन्हें संसाधन-संपन्न कांग्रेस पार्टी के खिलाफ बहुत कम सफलतामिली। 1947 में भारत स्वतंत्र हुआ, तो प्रधानमंत्री नेहरू ने उन्हें पहले कानून औरन्यायमंत्री बनने के लिए आमंत्रित किया। संविधान 26 जनवरी, 1950 को लागू किया गया था।डॉ. आंबेडकर ने इसकी सराहना की कि इसकी सीमाएँ हैं। बाबासाहब के अनंत संघर्ष कीमर्मांतक कहानी, जिसमें उनके बाल-संघर्ष को मुखरता से अभिव्यक्त किया गया है।

- Description: पंडित विद्यानिवास मिश्र के साहित्य का बहुआयामी विस्तार मुख्यत: निबन्ध-विधा में ही फलीभूत हुआ है। इस विधा में जितना काम उन्होंने किया है और इस विधा से जितना बड़ा काम उन्होंने लिया है, उतना हिन्दी में शायद ही किसी और से सम्भव हुआ हो। देश-दुनिया, सभ्यता-समाज, धर्म-संस्कृति, इतिहास, राजनीति, भाषाशास्त्र, साहित्यशास्त्र, कला समेत सभी कुछ को उन्होंने निबन्ध में समेटा है। एक लेखक के रूप में उन्होंने अपनी निष्ठा सदैव पाठक के प्रति रखी। वह पाठक जिसे उन्होंने बल-विद्या-बुद्धि किसी भी मामले में अपने से घटकर नहीं माना। उनका पाठक उन्हीं की तरह उनके गाँव-घर का है, और अपनी व्याप्ति में पूरे संसार का। उनके निबन्धों में जो व्यक्तित्व व्यंजित हुआ है, वह जितना अपना है, उतना ही उनके पाठक का भी। एक नितान्त गँवई व्यक्तित्व जिसके लिए जीव-जन्तु, नदी, पेड़, पहाड़ ऋतु का भी अपना व्यक्तित्व है। विद्या बोझ न बन जाए, इसके प्रति उनकी प्रतिश्रुति इतनी प्रबल है कि समीक्षा, साहित्येतिहास और काव्यशास्त्र आदि क्षेत्रों में अत्यन्त महत्त्वपूर्ण कार्यों के बावजूद उन्होंने आग्रहपूर्वक अपनी पहचान साहित्य के एक विद्यार्थी की ही बनाए रखी। सच तो यह है कि साहित्य में सैद्धान्तिक ही नहीं, व्यावहारिक स्तर पर भी ‘सहृदय’ को, ‘सामाजिक’ को, ‘सहृदय सामाजिक’ को जो सम्मान पं. विद्यानिवास मिश्र ने, उनके साहित्य-कर्म ने दिया, वह अभूतपूर्व है। उनके समग्र रचना-कर्म से इस संचयन में निबन्धों के अलावा उनके रचना-संसार के अल्पज्ञात और अज्ञात कोने-अँतरों का प्रतिनिधित्व करने का प्रयास भी किया गया है। पाठक यहाँ कविता, काव्यान्तर, ध्वनि-रूपक, व्यंग्य-बन्ध, साक्षात्कार, संवाद, व्याख्या, अनुवाद और उनके पत्र-व्यवहार की भी झलक पा सकेंगे। साथ ही विद्वान सम्पादकगण के अथक परिश्रम से यह भी सम्भव हुआ है कि पंडित जी की विराट निबन्ध-सम्पदा का हर रंग, हर रूप इसमें मुखर हो सके।
