पुस्तक में ऐसी बारह सच्ची कहानियाँ हैं जिनसे बच्चों की दासता और उत्पीड़न के अलग-अलग प्रकारों और विभिन्न इलाक़ों तथा काम-धंधों में होने वाले शोषण के तौर-तरीक़ों को समझा जा सकता है। जैसे; पत्थर व अभ्रक की खदानें, ईंट-भट्ठे, क़ालीन कारख़ाने, सर्कस, खेतिहर मज़दूरी, जबरिया भिखमंगी, बाल विवाह, दुर्व्यापार (ट्रैफ़िकिंग), यौन उत्पीड़न, घरेलू बाल मज़दूरी और नरबलि आदि। हमारे समाज के अँधेरे कोनों पर रोशनी डालती ये कहानियाँ एक तरफ हमें उन खतरों से आगाह करती है जिनसे भारत समेत दुनियाभर में लाखों बच्चे आज भी जूझ रहे हैं। दूसरी तरफ धूल से उठे फूलों की ये कहानियाँ यह भी बतलाती हैं कि हमारी एक छोटी-सी सकारात्मक पहल भी बच्चों को गुमनामी से बाहर निकालने में कितना महत्त्वपूर्ण हो सकती है, नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेता की कलम से निकली ये कहानियाँ आपको और अधिक मानवीय बनाती हैं, और ज़्यादा ज़िम्मेदार बनाती है।
