वर्ण-व्यवस्था के अमानवीय बन्धनों ने शताब्दियों से दलितों के भीतर हीनता भाव को पुख़्ता किया है। धर्म और संस्कृति की आड़ में साहित्य ने भी इस भावना की नींव सुदृढ़ की है। ऐसे सौन्दर्यशास्त्र का निर्माण किया गया जो अपनी सोच और स्थापनाओं में दलित विरोधी है और समाज के अनिवार्य अन्तर्सम्बन्धों को खंडित करने वाला भी। जनवादी, प्रगतिशील और जनतांत्रिक साहित्य द्वारा भारत में जन्मना जाति के सन्दर्भ में केवल वर्ग की ही बातें करने से उपजी एकांगी दृष्टि के विपरीत दलित साहित्य सामाजिक समानता और राजनीतिक भागीदारी को भी साहित्य का विषय बनाकर आर्थिक समानता की मुहिम को पूरा करता है—ऐसी समानता जिसके बग़ैर मनुष्य पूर्ण समानता नहीं पा सकता। दलित चिन्तन के नए आयाम का यह विस्तार साहित्य की मूल भावना का ही विस्तार है जो पारम्परिक और स्थापित साहित्य को आत्मविश्लेषण के लिए बाध्य करता है और झूठी और अतार्किक मान्यताओं का विरोध। अपने पूर्व साहित्यकारों के प्रति आस्थावान रहकर नहीं, बल्कि आलोचनात्मक दृष्टि रखकर दलित साहित्यकारों ने नई जद्दोजहद शुरू की है, जिससे जड़ता टूटी है और साहित्य आधुनिकता और समकालीनता की ओर अग्रसर हुआ है। यह पुस्तक दलित साहित्यान्दोलन की एक बड़ी कमी को पूरा करती हुई दलित-रचनात्मकता की कुछ मूलभूत आस्थाओं और प्रस्थान बिन्दुओं की खोज भी करती है, और साहित्य के स्थापित तथा वर्चस्वशाली गढ़ों को उन आस्थाओं के बल पर चुनौती भी देती है।

Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar is considered the Messiah of the Dalits in India. In 1947, the Constituent Assembly appointed him as the chairman of the Drafting Committee constituted for drafting the Constitution for independent India. He played a key role in building the Constitution. He was born on 14 April 1891 at Mhow (near Indore), a small town of present Madhya Pradesh. He was the fourteenth child of Subedar Ramji and Bhimabai Sakpal. Being from the Maharcaste, he was treated as an ‘untouchable’. His father and his grandfather had served in the British Army. Good schools were arranged by the then government for the education of the children of all military personnel. Therefore, despite being from a low caste, he got a good education. In 1937, Dr Ambedkar introduced a bill to end the ‘Khoti’ practice of Mahars working as official slaves in the Konkan region. When India became independent in 1947, he adorned the post of the Minister of Law. He had made a clarion call—‘Lost rights are never regained by begging... but by relentless struggle’. For his remarkable work, he was posthumously awarded India’s highest civilian award ‘Bharat Ratna’ in the year 1990.

Oral epics in any Indian language are generally associated with certain specific communities, defined by their traditional occupations; and the present oral epic Koti Channaya belongs to the Billava community. This poetic narrative, which records the life and adventures of the two cultural heroes of the Billava community, their yearning for cultivable land, their brave opposition to the established powerful classes, and their tragic end, is sung by the members of the particular communities called Pambada and Parava of coastal Karnataka, during the annual worship of the twin heroes. The oral epic, Koti Chennaya unravels the world of Billava community (traditionally toddy-tappers) of coastal Karnataka recording in the process the life and adventures as also the travails and tribulations of the two cultural heroes of Billava community. Most of the oral epics begin with a 'Creation Myth', which begins with the creation of the entire universe step by step, thus focuses on the legendary first parents/ancestors of the community concerned. Such a myth, besides glorifying the cultural heroes of the epic, gives a privileged position to the community by linking it with the rest of the world and gives it a socio-cultural identity. Koti Channaya also begins with a 'Creation Myth'. A recent study undertaken by UNESCO says that half of the 6,700 languages spoken in the world at present face the danger of extinction before the end of this century.

भारत केवल भौगोलिक रचना या भूखंड मात्र नहीं है, न तो भारतबोध मात्र इतिहास से बनता है । वस्तुत: भारतबोध एक सनातनबोध की प्रक्रिया है, जो नित्य और निरंतर, इन दोनों के साथ गुंफित होता है। नित्यता से शाश्वत मूल्य आते हैं तो निरंतरता से समय के साथ उनका समंजन होता है। भारतबोध राष्ट्रीयता है, संस्कृति है और धर्म भी है। भारतबोध पद से जो अर्थ अभिहित होता है--वह सनातन और निरंतर सभ्यता की जीवन-प्रणाली की अभिव्यंजना है। भारतीयता का विचार, भारतबोध का प्रश्न इस रूप में समझा जा सकता है कि यह कृतज्ञता की संस्कृति है और कृतज्ञता का प्रारंभ इस मान्यता, इस विश्वास के साथ होता है कि हम कुछ ऋणों के साथ उत्पन्न हुए हैं । हमने इस धरती में जन्म लेने के साथ ही समाज का, धरती का, परिवार का, शिक्षकों का, आचार्यों का ऋण प्राप्त किया है और वास्तविक मुक्ति हमें तब होगी, जब हम इन ऋणों से मुक्त होंगे; और इससे ऋण मुक्ति का तरीका इतना ही है कि हमें मनुष्य बनना है; न तो यह सभ्य बनने की प्रणाली है और न ही यह जीनियस बनने की । भारत धर्म भी है और यह धर्म उपासना-पंथों से परे भी । यह धर्म मानवीय मूल्यों का पुंज है। भारतबोध की दृष्टि से इस पुस्तक में कुछ सूत्रों की चर्चा है और कुछ सूत्रों का आज के परिप्रेक्ष्य में पल्ल्वन भी है। समकाल के भारत की भूमिका को उभारने की कोशिश की गई है और समकाल के भारत के लिए, भारत में जन्म लिये हुए लोगों को किस प्रकार की जीवन प्रणाली को स्वीकार करना है; किस मूल्य-व्यवस्था को स्वीकार करना है, इस पर किंचित्‌ विवेचन किया गया है.

वेरियर एलविन एक युवा अंग्रेज़ थे जो मिशनरी बनकर भारत आए और बाद में भारत के एक महत्त्वपूर्ण मानव-विज्ञानी बने। गांधी जी की प्रेरणा और जमनालाल बजाज के मार्गदर्शन में वेरियर एलविन ने मैकाल पहाड़ी पर बसे एक गोंड गाँव करंजिया में बसने का निर्णय लिया और उस क्षेत्र के लोगों के कल्याण के लिए ख़ुद को समर्पित कर दिया। ‘एक गोंड गाँव में जीवन’ उनके करंजिया में बिताए 1932 से 1936 तक के जीवन का रोज़नामचा है जहाँ वे गोंड लोगों की तरह ही स्वयं और कुछ मित्रों की सहायता से बनाई गई एक झोंपड़ी में रहते थे। यह जीवन्त, मर्मस्पर्शी और उपाख्यानात्मक पुस्तक है जिसमें एलविन ने निरीक्षण की अपनी मानव-विज्ञानी क्षमता और स्वाभाविक विनोदप्रियता के संयोग से गोंड जीवन की बहुरंगी छवि और आश्रम, जिसमें हिन्दू मुसलमान, ईसाई, गोंड आदि सभी शामिल हैं, की आन्तरिक उपलब्धि का उत्कृष्ट वर्णन किया है।
