हिन्दी सिनेमा एक साथ ढेर सारे मिले-जुले प्रभावों से परिचालित है। एक तरफ़ हॉलीवुड सिनेमा, लोकनाट्य रूपों तथा पारसी थियेटर की खिचड़ी, दूसरी तरफ़ पौराणिक मिथकों का लोक-लुभावन स्वरूप, तीसरी तरफ़ इटैलियन नवयथार्थवादी सिनेमा का प्रभाव। इन सबके बीच भारतीय सिनेमा के अपने मूल गुणों को पहचानने-परखने की कोशिश ही इस पुस्तक का ध्येय है। दादा साहब फाल्के ने भारतीय सिनेमा को व्याकरण के साँचे में कसने के लिए एक भारतीय सिने-सिद्धान्त की आवश्यकता महसूस की थी लेकिन वे स्वयं ऐसा कर नहीं पाए और आगे भी नहीं किया जा सका।
भारतीय सिने-सिद्धान्त और सिने-कला, इतिहास, पटकथा की संरचना आदि पर छिटपुट टिप्पणियों, लेखों, विचारों को एकत्रित कर सिने-सिद्धान्त का अवलोकन इस पुस्तक के मुद्दों में केन्द्रीय है। सिनेमा की कला-भाषा का ठीक से शिक्षण नहीं होने के चलते एक दृष्टिहीन सिनेमा का व्यावसायिक लुभावना सम्मोहन समाज पर हावी है। यह पुस्तक भारतीय सिने-सिद्धान्त को लेकर किंचित् भी चिन्तित व्यक्तियों को गम्भीरता से सोचने के लिए तथ्य उपलब्ध कराएगी, साथ ही एक सामूहिक प्रयास के लिए प्रेरित करेगी।
