भारत की पौराणिक परम्परा के प्राण-स्वरूप हैं श्रीकृष्ण और श्रीराधा के लीला-चरित्र का प्राण हैं उनकी अनन्य संगिनी श्रीराधा। उनको जाने बिना न तो श्रीकृष्ण को जाना जा सकता है न ही भारतीय संस्कृति के उस अन्तःकरण को, जहाँ जीवन और संसार के समस्त कार्य-व्यापारों के सुख-असुख से ऊपर प्रेम को प्रतिष्ठा प्राप्त है। वस्तुतः राधा प्रेम का मूर्तिभाव स्वरूप हैं जिनकी औपन्यासिक गाथा प्रस्तुत करती है यह पुस्तक।
श्रीराधा को लेकर कथा-किंवदन्तियों से लेकर परम्परा-पुराणों तक में इतनी कहानियाँ हैं जिनसे एक तो जन-मन को उनसे लगाव और उनके प्रति जिज्ञासा का संकेत मिलता है, दूसरी तरफ यथार्थ-अयर्थाथ का संशय भी उत्पन्न होता है। इस मायने में यह उपन्यास एक महत्त्वपूर्ण प्रस्थान माना जाना चाहिए जिसमें श्रीराधा के सम्बन्ध में फैली भ्रान्तियों का निराकरण कर उनकी प्रामाणिक कथा दी गई है।
राधा के बारे में सबसे बड़ी भ्रान्ति यह है कि उनसे श्रीकृष्ण का विवाहेत्तर सम्बन्ध था और पारिवारिक सम्बन्धों के लिहाज से वे उनकी मामी—श्रीकृष्ण की पालक माता यशोदा के भाई रायण/रायन या अभिमन्यु की ब्याहता—थीं। जबकि परम्परा यशोदा के एक ही भाई कुम्भव के अस्तित्त्व को स्वीकार करती है। इन्हीं कुम्भक ने राधा और उनके भाई श्रीदामा को अपनी सन्तान बनाकर जरासंध के क्रूर सैनिकों से बचाया था, जब इन बच्चों के माता-पिता की हत्या हो गई। इसी प्रकार एक बड़ा भ्रम यह भी है कि राधा और श्रीकृष्ण का विधिवत विवाह नहीं हुआ था। जबकि दोनों ने बलराम, अर्जुन, नन्द और यशोदा की उपस्थिति में अग्नि प्रदक्षिणा करके विवाह किया था। और यही श्रीकृष्ण का भी इकलौता वैवाहिक सम्बन्ध था जिसको उन्होंने अग्नि प्रदक्षिणा की थी।
परम्परा, पुराण, शास्त्र आदि तमाम स्रोतों के गहन अध्ययन-विश्लेषण पर आधारित एक अत्यन्त पठनीय उपन्यास।
