- Description: स्वामी विवेकानंद का भारत में अवतरण उस समय हुआ, जब हिंदू धर्म के अस्तित्व पर संकट के बादल मँडरा रहे थे। पंडा-पुरोहित तथा धर्म के ठेकेदारों के कारण हिंदू धर्म घोर आडंबरवादी तथा पथभ्रष्ट हो गया था। ऐसे विकट समय में स्वामीजी ने हिंदू धर्म का उद्धार कर उसे उसकी खोई प्रतिष्ठा पुन: दिलाई। मात्र तीस वर्ष की आयु में स्वामी विवेकानंद ने शिकागो के विश्वधर्म सम्मेलन में हिंदू धर्म का परचय लहराया और भारत को विश्व के आध्यात्मिक गुरु का स्थान दिलाया। स्वामीजी केवल संत ही नहीं थे, बल्कि एक प्रखर देशभक्त, ओजस्वी वक्ता, गंभीर विचारक, मनीषी लेखक और परम मानव-प्रेमी भी थे। मात्र उनतालीस वर्ष के अपने छोटे से जीवनकाल में उन्होंने जो काम कर दिखाए, वे आनेवाली पीढ़ियों का शताब्दियों तक मार्गदर्शन करते रहेंगे। कवींद्र रवींद्र ने एक बार कहा था—“यदि भारत को जानना चाहते हो तो विवेकानंद को पढ़िए।” हिंदू समाज में फैली कुरीतियों का घोर विरोध करते हुए स्वामीजी ने आह्वान किया था—“उठो, जागो और स्वयं जागकर औरों को जगाओ। अपने नर-जन्म को सफल करो और तब तक रुको नहीं जब तक कि लक्ष्य प्राप्त न हो जाए।” हमें विश्वास है, ऐस किसी विलक्षण तपस्वी के गुणों को आत्मसात् कर अपना तथा राष्ट्र का कल्याण किया जा सकता है—इसी विश्वास को बल देती है एक अत्यंत प्रेरणादायी पुस्तक—‘युगद्रष्टा स्वामी विवेकानंद’।

- Description: स्त्रियों की पराधीनता’ पुस्तक में मिल पुरुष-वर्चस्ववाद की स्वीकार्यता के आधार के तौर पर काम करनेवाली सभी प्रस्तरीकृत मान्यताओं-संस्कारों-रूढ़ियों को, और स्थापित कानूनों को तर्कों के ज़रिए प्रश्नचिह्नों के कठघरे में खड़ा करते हैं। निजी सम्पत्ति और असमानतापूर्ण वर्गीय संरचना के इतिहास के साथ सम्बन्ध नहीं जोड़ पाने के बावजूद, मिल ने परिवार और विवाह की संस्थाओं के स्त्री-उत्पीड़क, अनैतिक चरित्र के ऊपर से रागात्मकता के आवरण को नोच फेंका है और उन नैतिक मान्यताओं की पवित्रता का रंग-रोगन भी खुरच डाला है जो सिर्फ़ स्त्रियों से ही समस्त एकनिष्ठता, सेवा और समर्पण की माँग करती हैं और पुरुषों को उड़ने के लिए लीला-विलास का अनन्त आकाश मुहैया कराती हैं। पुरुष-वर्चस्ववाद की सामाजिक-वैधिक रूप से मान्यता प्राप्त सत्ता को मिल ने मनुष्य की स्थिति में सुधार की राह की सबसे बड़ी बाधा बताते हुए स्त्री-पुरुष सम्बन्धों में पूर्ण समानता की तरफ़दारी की है। स्त्री-पुरुष समानता के विरोध में जो उपादान काम करते हैं, उनमें मिल प्रचलित भावनाओं को प्रमुख स्थान देते हुए उनके विरुद्ध तर्क करते हैं। वे बताते हैं कि (उन्नीसवीं शताब्दी में) समाज में आम तौर पर लोग स्वतंत्रता और न्याय की तर्कबुद्धिसंगत अवधारणाओें को आत्मसात् कर चुके हैं लेकिन स्त्री-पुरुष सम्बन्धों के सन्दर्भ में उनकी यह धारणा है कि शासन करने, निर्णय लेने और आदेश देने की स्वाभाविक क्षमता पुरुष में ही है। स्त्री-अधीनस्थता की समूची सामाजिक व्यवस्था एकांगी अनुभव व सिद्धान्त पर आधारित है। मिल के अनुसार, प्राचीन काल में बहुत-से स्त्री-पुरुष दास थे। फिर दास-प्रथा के औचित्य पर प्रश्न उठने लगे और धीरे-धीरे यह प्रथा समाप्त हो गई लेकिन स्त्रियों की दासता धीरे-धीरे एक क़िस्म की निर्भरता में तब्दील हो गई। मिल स्त्री की निर्भरता को पुरातन दासता की ही निरन्तरता मानते हैं जिस पर तमाम सुधारों के रंग-रोगन के बाद भी पुरानी निर्दयता के चिह्न अभी मौजूद हैं और आज भी स्त्री-पुरुष असमानता के मूल में ‘ताक़त’ का वही आदिम नियम है जिसके तहत ताक़तवर सब कुछ हथिया लेता है। —सम्पादकीय से,
