विकास बनाम पर्यावरण इस सदी की सबसे बड़ी बहसों में से एक है। आज जबकि पूरी दुनिया में पर्यावरण-चेतना फैल रही है और विकास की लगभग हर गतिविधि के लिए पर्यावरणीय मानदंड निर्धारित किए जा रहे हैं, फिर भी विकासवादी निरन्तर इस कोशिश में रहते हैं कि पर्यावरणीय ख़तरों की अनदेखी करके भी किस तरह कोई बड़ा बाँध, कोई बड़ी परियोजना शुरू की जाए। इसलिए जब सुन्दरलाल बहुगुणा दुनिया के अन्य पर्यावरणविदों के साथ सुर मिलाकर यह कहते हैं कि तीसरा विश्वयुद्ध छिड़ गया है और वह तथाकथित विकासवादियों द्वारा प्रकृति के विरुद्ध छेड़ा गया है, तो वे ग़लत नहीं होते।
वे कहते हैं, ‘‘प्रश्न केवल विकास के विरोध का नहीं है, ज़िन्दा रहने के अधिकार की रक्षा का है। जिन परियोजनाओं को सरकारी मीडिया और शासन व अर्थनीति पर हावी आभिजात्य वर्ग देश के त्वरित विकास के लिए अनिवार्य मानता है, उन परियोजनाओं के औचित्य को चुनौती देनेवालों को विदेशी एजेंट, देशद्रोही और विकास के दुश्मन के रूप में प्रचारित किया जाता है।’’
सुन्दरलाल बहुगुणा भी इस दृष्टि से बौद्धिक समाज में नायक और खलनायक दोनों हैं। लेकिन हिमालय, गंगा, जंगल और टिहरी बाँध को लेकर जो सवाल बहुगुणा ने खड़े किए हैं और सरकार की प्रकृति-विरोधी नीतियों का पर्दाफ़ाश किया है, उसमें शायद ही किसी को आपत्ति हो। साथ ही उन्होंने विकास की जो वैकल्पिक दृष्टि दी है, उससे भी किसी को परहेज़ नहीं होगा।
यह पुस्तक ‘धरती की पुकार’ बहुगुणा जी के चिन्तन का सार है। इसमें ‘चिपको आन्दोलन’ से लेकर टिहरी बाँध के विरोध में उनके लम्बे उपवासों तक की चिन्तनभूमि के दर्शन होते हैं। आशा है, यह पुस्तक विकास और पर्यावरण के रिश्तों को सही परिप्रेक्ष्य में देखने-समझने में मदद करेगी।

This book examines Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's contributions to the growth of our nation and his function as its pillar. He supported the development of every person, thought everyone should have access to clean, safe drinking water, that rural areas should have access to power, that everyone should have access to employment possibilities, and that everyone should be informed of their rights to survival. In this book, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar have personas that are strikingly similar in their endeavours to advance the underprivileged segments of society. Making the nation "self-reliant" and maximising the potential of its natural resources and human resources are the goals of the current government's policies and reforms for the benefit of the general population. It also draws attention to the striking similarities between the two towering figures who overcame hardship to succeed and sought to overthrow repressive social structures with which they were personally familiar. Apart from these, I loved the quality of the book, it's pages, printing, design, everything is so apt. I received the book on time, and the packaging was done well.
