C. Viruthachalam (25 April 1906 – 30 June 1948), known by the pseudonym Pudhumaipithan, also spelt Pudumaipithan or Puthumaippiththan, was a highly influential and revolutionary Tamil fiction writer. His writing style was marked by social satire, progressive ideas, and outspoken criticism of societal norms. Many contemporary writers and critics found his views challenging, often reacting with hostility. Over the past sixty years since his death, both his life and works have been extensively analysed and debated. Today, his influence is acknowledged and appreciated by current Tamil fiction writers and critics. In 2002, the Government of Tamil Nadu officially nationalised Pudumaippithan's works.
