तीक्ष्ण हास्यबोध और अकाट्य तर्कों के साथ जर्मेन ग्रीयर ने इस पुस्तक में स्त्री के सम्मान, उदात्त मनोवेगों की अभिव्यक्ति और एक व्यक्ति के रूप में उसके स्वतंत्र विकास की ज़रूरत को रेखांकित किया। दौड़ने, चिल्लाने, ज़ोर से बोलने, घुटने फैलाकर बैठने, सीखने और सिखाने की आज़ादी को अनिवार्य बताते हुए वे कहती हैं कि ‘औरत को अपनी यौनिकता को व्यक्त करने का अधिकार’ हो; कि उसकी यौनेच्छा मात्र प्रतिक्रियात्मक न हो। उनके मुतािबक़ यह सिर्फ़ पुरुषों के प्रस्तावों को स्वीकार या अस्वीकार करने का प्रश्न नहीं है, इसका अर्थ यह है कि वह स्वयं एक स्वायत्त इकाई की तरह अपनी इच्छा को व्यक्त कर सके।
दुिनया की अनेक भाषाओं में अनूिदत इस किताब ने आलोचना भी कम नहीं झेली, लेिकन आज भी यह उतनी ही प्रासंगिक है जितनी बीसवीं सदी के आख़िरी दशकों में थी। तमाम क्षेत्रों में अपनी दावेदारी सिद्ध करने के बावजूद, अभी भी यह नहीं कहा जा सकता कि स्त्री अपनी देह की मालिक ख़ुद है।
भारत के सन्दर्भ में इस पुस्तक के तर्क और भी ज़्यादा सटीक कहे जा सकते हैं।

- Description: कवि जगनिक रचित ‘परिमाल रासो’ में वर्णित आल्हा-ऊदल की इस वीरगाथा को प्रत्यक्ष युद्ध-वर्णन के रूप में लिखा गया है। बारहवीं शताब्दी में हुए वावरा (52) गढ़ के युद्धों का इसमें प्रत्यक्ष वर्णन है। स्वयं कवि जगनिक ने इन वीरों को महाभारत काल के पांडवों-कौरवों का पुनर्जन्म माना है। बुंदेलखंड, मध्य प्रदेश, उत्तर प्रदेश एवं राजस्थान में इनकी शौर्य गाथाएँ गाँव-गाँव में गाई जाती हैं। पश्चिमी उत्तर प्रदेश और राजस्थान के कुछ भागों में तो आल्हा को ‘रामचरित मानस’ से भी अधिक लोकप्रियता प्राप्त है। गाँवों में फाल्गुन के दिनों में होली पर ढोल-नगाड़ों के साथ होली गाने की परंपरा है तो आल्हा गानेवाले सावन में मोहल्ले-मोहल्ले रंग जमाते हैं। मातृभूमि व मातृशक्ति की अपनी अस्मिता, गौरव और मर्यादा की रक्षा के लिए अपूर्व शौर्य और साहस का प्रदर्शन कर शत्रु का प्रतिकार करनेवाले रणबाँकुरों की वीरगाथाएँ, जो पाठक को उस युग की विषमताओं से परिचित कराएँगी; साथ ही आप में शक्ति और समर्पण का भाव जाग्रत् करेंगी।
