The story is based on a historical figure, a real Clarinda, the widow of a Maratha Brahmin, who had been one of the King's servants in Tanjore, and after her husband's death became theconcubine of an English oficer of the name Lyttleton. From these bare facts, Madhaviah creates a fictionlized early life of Clarinda as she grows up in the principality of Tanjore. The imagined story of this unusual woman, who gradually takes control of her life, gives Madhaviah the opportunity to work out some of his favourite themes: woman's education, the question of sati and widow re-marriage and the encounter between Hinduism and Christianity. The cross cultural, inter-religious relationship which is at the heart of the novel is unusual and profoundly interesting.

- Description: भारतीय स्वाधीनता-आन्दोलन में बिना किसी प्रकार की सुयश-प्राप्ति की कामना किए हँसते-हँसते फाँसी के तख़्ते पर झूल जानेवाले मृत्युंजयी वीरों के बलिदान का सर्वाधिक महत्त्व रहा है। उन वीरों को जितनी प्रतिष्ठा और सम्मान प्राप्त होना चाहिए था, उसकी उपेक्षा एवं अवहेलना सत्ता-लोलुप स्वार्थियों ने सदैव ही की है। यदि उन वीरों की नि:स्वार्थ मातृ-भूमि-सेवा का अनुकरण किया गया होता तो भारतीय जनता आज स्वर्ग-सुख का उपभोग निस्सन्देह करती होती। पराधीनता के समय जो भी क्रान्तिकारी साहित्य उपलब्ध था उसे भारतीय युवक बड़े उत्साह से पढ़ते थे; इसीलिए तत्कालीन युवकों में देश के प्रति नि:स्वार्थ सेवा की सच्ची लगन थी। आज भारतीय जनता, विशेषतः युवकों में सुषुप्त त्याग और सेवा की भावना को जाग्रत करने के लिए उन क्रान्तिकारी वीरों के इतिहास के पठन-पाठन की अत्यधिक आवश्यकता है। भारतीय क्रान्तिकारियों के सम्बन्ध में अभी तक बहुत कम लिखा गया है। इन क्रान्तिकारियों के सम्बन्ध में पुस्तक लिखने का कार्य अत्यन्त कठिन है क्योंकि सभी क्रान्तिकारी अपने कार्य-कलापों को एकदम गुप्त रखते थे, उनके निकटतम सहयोगी भी उनकी बहुत सी बातों से अपरिचित रहते थे। प्रस्तुत पुस्तक अमर शहीद स्व. चन्द्रशेखर आज़ाद और भगवतीचरण बोहरा के अत्यन्त विश्वासपात्र, क्रान्तिकारी आन्दोलन में निरन्तर कार्य करनेवाले भाई सुखदेव राज जी ने लिखी है। अस्तु, पुस्तक की उपादेयता निर्विवाद है।

He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire (KCIE) and was promoted to a Knight Grand Commander (GCIE) and a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, Civil Division (KBE).

- Description: ‘मांडवी’ रामकथा की स्त्री-चरित्रों को लेकर संवेदनशील रही आशा प्रभात की लेखनी का नया पड़ाव है। इससे पहले वह ‘मैं जनकनन्दिनी’ और ‘उर्मिला’ लिख चुकी हैं। ‘मांडवी’ भरत की पत्नी थीं जिनके विषय में न तो रामकथा में बहुत विस्तार से कुछ आता है, न ही बाद के विद्वानों-साहित्यकारों ने उन पर कुछ ख़ास ध्यान दिया, जबकि राम-वनवास के दौरान उन्होंने सम्भवतः लक्ष्मण की पत्नी उर्मिला से भी ज़्यादा पीड़ा का वहन किया होगा। आशा प्रभात एक सजग लेखिका के रूप में यह ठीक ही प्रश्न उठाती हैं कि रामायण के पुरुष-पात्र जहाँ इतने पराक्रमी, प्रज्ञावान और गुणवान थे, तो फिर स्त्री-पात्र क्या इतने संवेदनहीन और प्रज्ञाशून्य थे कि उनकी मनस्थिति का विस्तृत चित्रण करना कवियों की अनिवार्य नहीं लगा। इसी से प्रेरित होकर उन्होंने सीता और उर्मिला के बाद अब मांडवी को अपना विषय बनाया जो दुर्भाग्य से उस कैकेयी की बहू भी थी जिसके चलते राम को वनवास हुआ और उनसे जुड़े तमाम पात्रों, ख़ासकर स्त्रियों को इतना कुछ झेलना पड़ा। यह उपन्यास एक पौराणिक चरित्र की भावभूमि का अन्वेषण करते हुए स्त्री-मात्र की व्यथा को समझने का प्रयत्न करता है, और रामकथा के महत्त्वपूर्ण लेकिन उपेक्षित चरित्र को, उसके पूरे व्यक्तित्व के साथ रेखांकित करता है।
