He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire (KCIE) and was promoted to a Knight Grand Commander (GCIE) and a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, Civil Division (KBE).

The story is based on a historical figure, a real Clarinda, the widow of a Maratha Brahmin, who had been one of the King's servants in Tanjore, and after her husband's death became theconcubine of an English oficer of the name Lyttleton. She asked Rev. Schwartz to baptize her when he visited Palayamkottai. He refused, however, because of her 'irregular union'. Some years laterm after her husband's death, she was accepted into the chruch. From these bare facts, Madhaviah creates a fictionlized early life of Clarinda as she grows up in the principality of Tanjore. The imagined story of this unusual woman, who gradually takes control of her life, gives Madhaviah the opportunity to work out some of his favourite themes: woman's education, the question of sati and widow re-marriage and the encounter between Hinduism and Christianity. The cross cultural, inter-religious relationship which is at the heart of the novel is unusual and profoundly interesting.

- Description: ‘क्रान्तिवीर भगत सिंह : ‘अभ्युदय’ और ‘भविष्य’’ आज़ादी की लड़ाई, ख़ासकर इन्क़लाबी नौजवानों के संघर्ष की हक़ीक़त तलाशती कोशिश का नतीजा है। पुस्तक में शामिल पत्रिकाओं ‘अभ्युदय’ और ‘भविष्य’ की सामग्री हिन्दुस्तान की आज़ादी के संग्राम को ठीक से समझने के लिए बेहद ज़रूरी है। ‘अभ्युदय’ ने भगत सिंह के मुक़दमे और फाँसी के हालात पर भरपूर सामग्री छापी और 8 मई, 1931 को प्रकाशित उसका ‘भगत सिंह विशेषांक’ ब्रिटिश सरकार द्वारा ज़ब्त कर लिया गया। भगत सिंह के जीवन, व्यक्तित्व और परिवार को लेकर जो सामग्री ‘अभ्युदय’ व ‘भविष्य’ में छापी गई—विशेषतः भगत सिंह व उनके परिवार के चित्र—उसी से पूरे देश में भगत सिंह की विशेष छवि निर्मित हुई। ‘भविष्य’ साप्ताहिक इलाहाबाद से रामरख सिंह सहगल के सम्पादन में निकलता था। पहले पं. सुन्दरलाल के सम्पादन में ‘भविष्य’ निकलता था, जिसमें रामरख सिंह सहगल काम करते थे। 2 अक्टूबर, 1930 को गांधी जयन्ती पर रामरख सिंह सहगल ने, जो स्वयं युक्तप्रान्त कांग्रेस कार्यसमिति के सदस्य थे, ‘भविष्य’ साप्ताहिक का प्रकाशन शुरू किया। पहले अंक से ही भगत सिंह आदि पर सामग्री प्रकाशित कर, ‘भविष्य’ ने सनसनी फैला दी। ‘भविष्य’ में भगत सिंह की फाँसी के बाद के हालात का जीवन्त चित्रण हुआ है। ‘भविष्य’ और ‘अभ्युदय’ से कुछ चुनिन्दा चित्र इस किताब में शामिल किए गए हैं। सम्पादक प्रो. चमन लाल ने विलुप्तप्राय तथ्यों को इस पुस्तक में सँजोकर ऐतिहासिक कार्य किया है। वस्तुतः इस इन्क़लाबी वृत्तान्त को पढ़ना स्वतंत्रता की अदम्य जिजीविषा से साक्षात्कार करना है।

- Description: ‘काला पहाड़’ और ‘रेत’ जैसे उपन्यासों द्वारा भगवानदास मोरवाल ने हिंदी में एक ऐसे लेखक की छवि बनाई है जो अपनी कथा-वीथियाँ समाज, देश और संस्कृति के तथ्यात्मक भूगोल के बीच से निकालता है। आम तौर पर वे ऐसे विषयों को चुनते हैं जिन्हें सिर्फ कल्पना के सहारे कहानी नहीं बनाया जा सकता, उनका गारा-माटी श्रमसाध्य शोध और खोजबीन से तैयार होता है। मेवात उनके लेखकीय और नागरिक सरोकारों का केंद्र रहा है. अपनी इस मिट्टी की संस्कृति, इतिहास और उसके समाजार्थिक पक्षों पर उन्होंने बार-बार निगाह डाली है। ‘खानजादा’ उपन्यास इसकी अगली कड़ी है। यह महत्वपूर्ण इसलिए है कि यह उन अदृश्य तथ्यों की निर्ममता से पड़ताल करता है जो हमारी आज की राष्ट्रीय चिंताओं से सीधे जुड़े हुए हैं। भारत में तुगलक, सादात, लोदी और मुगलों द्वारा चौदहवीं सदी के मध्य से मेवातियों पर किए गए अत्याचारों और देहली के निकट मेवात में मची तबाही की दस्तावेजी प्रस्तुति करते हुए यह उपन्यास मेवातियों की उन शौर्य-गाथाओं को भी सामने लाता है जिनका इतिहास में बहुत उल्लेख नहीं हुआ है। प्रसंगवश इसमें हमें कुछ ऐसे उद्घाटनकारी सूत्र भी मिलते हैं जो इतिहास की तोड़-मरोड़ से त्रस्त हमारे वर्तमान को भी कुछ राहत दे सकते हैं। मसलन बाबर और उसका भारत आना। हिन्दू अस्मिता का उस वक्त के मुस्लिम आक्रान्ताओं से क्या रिश्ता बनता था, धर्म-परिवर्तन की प्रकृति और उद्देश्य क्या थे और इस प्रक्रिया से वह भारत कैसे बना जिसे गंगा-जमुनी तहजीब कहा गया, इसके भी कुछ संकेत इस उपन्यास में मिलते हैं।
