Maharajadhiraja Rameshwar Singh (16 January 1860 – 3 July 1929) was the 21st ruler of the Khandawala dynasty of Darbhanga in the Mithila region from 1898 till his death. On the one hand, he was a scholar of Indian scriptures and worshiper of divine powers, on the other hand, he was proficient in the English language and an efficient administrator. As the president of Bharat Dharma Mahamandal, he propagated Sanatan Dharma all over India and strengthened it socially and religiously. For the promotion of education in Mithila as well as social political awakening, he established a press and started a newspaper Mithila Mihir. Many important books were published under his supervision. Maharaj Rameshwar Singh established many factories for economic development and played an important role in the establishment of Kashi Hindu University. The ruins of the grand palace of Rajnagar in the present Madhubani district and many grand temples in that complex remind us of his glory. He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire (KCIE) and was promoted to a Knight Grand Commander (GCIE) and a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, Civil Division (KBE).

पांचाली उपन्यास द्रौपदी के मन को समझने का प्रयास है। द्रौपदी आजीवन सहधर्मिणी बनी रही किन्तु इसके कारण पाँच पाण्डवों की पत्नी बनी। पांचाली का कथन है कि मेरे जीवन में एक भी क्षण ऐसा नहीं आया जहाँ मुझे अनुभव हुआ हो कि मैं इन सब की पत्नी हूँ। मैं तो सदैव इनकी दासी और भोग्या ही रही। आज सोचती हूँ कि मैंने स्वयं को पाँच हिस्सों में क्यों बाँटा? जब बाँट ही रही थी तो छह हिस्से क्यों नहीं किए? एक हिस्सा अपने लिये क्यों नहीं रखा जहाँ मेरी इच्छा के विपरीत किसी का भी प्रवेश वर्जित हो, साथ ही बाँटते समय थोड़ी-सी बेईमानी क्यों नहीं कर ली? थोड़ी नहीं अधिक बेईमानी करनी चाहिये थी मुझे, आधा से भी अधिक, किन्तु अब तो बाँट चुकी, सब हिस्सों में से कतर-ब्योंत करूँगी तो भी कुछ पूरा तो होगा नहीं बस टुकड़े-टुकड़े ही रहेंगे। अब तो मैं अभ्यस्त हो चुकी हूँ वे हिस्से मेरे जीवन में ढल चुके हैं, उस समय क्यों नहीं सोचा?

इतिहास पर लिखना बहुत मुश्किल होता है, और विशेषकर उस इतिहास पर लिखना, जिसके बारे में कहीं कोई विशेष जानकारी नहीं मिलती हो। आकाश माथुर ने एक ऐसा ही विषय उठा लिया। कुँवर चैन सिंह की जगह उन्हीं के साथ शहीद हुई नर्तकी उमेदा की कहानी लिखना। नर्तकी का नाम तक कहीं नहीं मिलता, बस एक टूटी-फूटी समाधि है, जो सीहोर में कुँवर चैन सिंह की छतरी के पास बनी हुई है। समाधि भी धीरे-धीरे टूट रही है, या यूँ कहें कि तोड़ी जा रही है। और कुछ समय में वहाँ समाधि का नामो-निशान तक नहीं मिलेगा। लेकिन अब कम से कम यह तो है कि आकाश ने उसकी कहानी को सुरक्षित कर दिया है। प्रशंसा करनी होगी आकाश की कि उसने एक ऐसी शहीद नर्तकी की कहानी लिखी, जिसके बारे में कहीं एक शब्द भी नहीं लिखा गया है। इस उपन्यास को पढ़ते हुए यह विश्वास करना मुश्किल होता है कि कुछ बहुत छोटे-छोटे सूत्रों से ही इस पूरे उपन्यास को लिख दिया गया है और उमेदा की कहानी रच दी गई है। आकाश ने बहुत मेहनत की है इस उपन्यास पर। इन दिनों जब शोध कर के लिखने की परंपरा ही समाप्त होती जा रही है, ऐसे में यह उपन्यास इसलिए भी महत्त्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि इसके लेखक ने न केवल किताबों की यात्रा की है, बल्कि उन स्थानों की भी यात्रा की, जहाँ-जहाँ इस उपन्यास को लेकर उसे सूत्र मिल सकते थे। जाने किस-किस से मुलाक़ात की, उन सब से, जिनके पास से कोई छोटी से छोटी भी जानकारी मिल सकती थी। यह मेहनत, यह श्रम और यह शोध इस उपन्यास को पढ़ते समय शब्द दर शब्द महसूस होता है। उपन्यास बहुत रोचक बना है, जिसको पढ़ते समय कभी भी पठनीयता की कमी महसूस नहीं होती है। आकाश का यह पहला उपन्यास है, उम्मीद करता हूँ कि आगे और भी उपन्यास आकाश की लेखनी से सामने आएँगे। मेरी शुभकामनाएँ। - पंकज सुबीर

Clarinda written in English is a novel set in the mid-18th century. The story is based on a historical figure, a real Clarinda, the widow of a Maratha Brahmin, who had been one of the King's servants in Tanjore, and after her husband's death became theconcubine of an English oficer of the name Lyttleton. She asked Rev. Schwartz to baptize her when he visited Palayamkottai. He refused, however, because of her 'irregular union'. Some years laterm after her husband's death, she was accepted into the chruch. From these bare facts, Madhaviah creates a fictionlized early life of Clarinda as she grows up in the principality of Tanjore. The imagined story of this unusual woman, who gradually takes control of her life, gives Madhaviah the opportunity to work out some of his favourite themes: woman's education, the question of sati and widow re-marriage and the encounter between Hinduism and Christianity. The cross cultural, inter-religious relationship which is at the heart of the novel is unusual and profoundly interesting.

ग़ुलामी के दौरान पंजाब पर अकल्पनीय अत्याचार के प्रतिवाद में रचित तथा ब्रिटिश शासन द्वारा प्रतिब​न्धित और ज़ब्त रचनाएँ ‘जलियाँवाला बाग़ की कराहें’ पुस्तक जलियाँवाला बाग़ के नरसंहार की अतिशय वेदना और अंग्रेज़ी जुल्मों की व्यथा-कथा है जिसे हिन्दुस्तानियों ने अपनी आत्मा पर झेला, अपनी आँखों से देखा और साहित्यकारों ने अपनी क़लम से उकेरा। यह जनता का, जनता के द्वारा और जनता के लिए लिखा गया साहित्य है जो एक सदी तक अन्वेषकों की नज़रों से लगभग छिपा रहा। इन रचनाकारों ने अंग्रेज़ी राज की प्रताड़नाएँ सहते हुए औपनिवेशिक काल की त्रासद स्थितियों को कलमबद्ध किया। रचनाएँ मौखिक यात्रा करती हुईं जन-चेतना के उद्देश्य तक पहुँचती रहीं। पुस्तक में कुल नौ अध्याय हैं जिनमें जलियाँवाला बाग़ हत्याकांड के बाद रचित वे नाटक, कविताएँ, दोहे, ठुमरी, लावणी, क़व्वाली, ग़ज़ल आदि सम्मिलित हैं जो अलग-अलग पुस्तिकाओं में प्रकाशित हुईं। लगभग सभी विधाओं में रचित यह साहित्य जलियाँवाला बाग़ की पृष्ठभूमि से लेकर हर छोटी-बड़ी घटना, अंग्रेज़ों की क्रूरता, जुल्म और यातनाओं, लोगों की बेबसी, लाचारी, सामाजिक दशा-दुर्दशा का निर्भीक और वास्तविक विवरण प्रस्तुत करता है तो दूसरी तरफ़ साहस से उठ खड़े होने का आह्वान भी करता है। इनमें नृशंस हत्याओं के साथ-साथ हरे-भरे पेड़-पौधों की उखड़ी-जली छालों, घास चरती हुईं गाय-भैंसों का चरते-चरते मारे जाना, तोते, कोयल और मैना आदि पक्षियों तक का भी गोलियों से डरकर मरने का मार्मिक चित्रण है। इन रचनाओं की सत्यता पर कोई सन्देह इसलिए नहीं किया जा सकता कि आधिकारिक ऐतिहासिक दस्तावेज़ों में भी किसी न किसी रूप में इनका ज़िक्र है और इतिहास की पुस्तकों में भी इन्हें प्राय: उसी रूप में अभिव्यक्त किया गया है।

तिच्या सोबतीवाचून अहिंसा आणि आत्मशिस्तीच्या माझ्या प्रयत्नांमध्ये मला यश मिळालं नसतं, हे सत्य मी मान्य करायला हवं. इतर कुणाच्याही तुलनेत ती मला अधिक चांगलं समजून घेऊ शकायची. तिची निष्ठा अद्वितीय होती. आयुष्याचा निरोप घेताना ती कुणाच्या मांडीवर, त्या क्षणी डोके टेकवून डोळे मिटेल हे मलाही शेवटपर्यंत माहीत नव्हतं, पण तिनं शेवटच्या क्षणी मला बोलावलं आणि माझ्या मांडीवर डोकं ठेवून अखेरचा श्वास घेतला. अशी होती बा! तिच्यासारखी निर्दोष श्रद्धा, नि:स्वार्थ भक्ती आणि सेवाभाव माझ्या पाहण्यात नाही. आमचं लग्न झाल्यापासून ती माझ्या आयुष्यातील सर्व संघर्षांमध्ये अतूट निष्ठेनं माझ्या पाठीशी उभी राहिली. शरीर-आत्म्यासह आपलं सर्वस्व अर्पून तिनं स्वत:ला माझ्या जीवनकार्याला वाहून घेतलं. अशा प्रकारच्या समर्पणाचं दुसरं उदाहरण क्वचितच सापडेल. महात्मा गांधी कस्तुरबांच्या तिसऱ्या स्मृतिदिनानिमित्त बोलताना 22 फेब्रुवारी 1947, नोआखाली. हिंदी में रामकथा पर बहुत कुछ काम हुआ है। इसमें सर्वाधिक विस्तृत संपूर्ण सर्वेक्षण फादर कामिल बुल्के (रामकथा) का है। रामचरितमानस और आधुनिक भारतीय भाषाओं में रचित रामचरितों का तुलनात्मक अध्ययन कई विद्वानों ने किया है। अभी तक गुजराती, मराठी, बँगला, तेलुगु एवं तमिल आदि भाषाओं के प्रमुख रामचरित काव्यों और उनमें उपलब्ध रामकथा का तुलसी के मानस के साथ तुलनात्मक अध्ययन हो चुका है। परंतु बलरामदास की दांडी रामायण और मानस की रामकथा का तुलनात्मक अध्ययन कम ही हुआ है। प्रसिद्ध समालोचक एवं अनुवादक डॉ. शंकरलाल पुरोहित ने बलरामदास के राम-संबंधी दृष्टिकोण के मूल में जगन्नाथ और तुलसी के राम-संबंधी दर्शन के मूल में ब्रह्म की बात को ध्यान में रखकर यह पुस्तक लिखी है। रामकथा जहाँ भी, जिस रूप में भी कही गई है, उसके मूल में भक्तिधारा रही है। तुलसी और बलराम की रामकथा-धारा में अवगाहन कर हम इसी निष्कर्ष पर पहँुचते हैं और यह भक्तिधारा मानव मंगल तथा जनकल्याण के लिए एक विराट् फलक पर उत्कीर्ण हुई है।

‘चन्द्रशेखर आज़ाद : विवेकशील क्रान्तिकारी’ प्रत्येक भारतीय के लिए एक अनिवार्य पाठ्य-पुस्तक की तरह है। चन्द्रशेखर आज़ाद ने भारत के स्वाधीनता संग्राम में महानायक की भूमिका निभाई। सच्चे अर्थों में उनका तन-मन-धन भारतमाता की सेवा में समर्पित रहा। वे आज़ाद जिए और अन्त तक पुलिस के हाथ न आए। आज़ाद ने अपने साहसी व्यक्तित्व से आज़ादी के देशव्यापी अभियान को क्रान्ति की अद्भुत गरिमा प्रदान की। उनके व्यक्तित्व से प्रभावित होकर असंख्य युवाओं ने क्रान्ति के मार्ग पर क़दम बढ़ाए। सरदार भगत सिंह के साथ तो आज़ाद का विशेष लगाव था। इस पुस्तक के अनुसार, ‘भगत सिंह को आज़ाद केवल पार्टी के एक सदस्य के नाते ही नहीं देखते थे, बल्कि उन्हें अपने भाई की तरह, अपने परिवार के व्यक्ति की तरह मानते और अत्यधिक स्नेह करते थे।’ सत्य तो यह है कि आज़ाद को प्रत्येक क्रान्तिकारी में अपना ही रूप दिखाई देता था। प्रस्तुत पुस्तक अमर शहीद चन्द्रशेखर आज़ाद के जीवन-वृत्तान्त के साथ उनके युग की महान गाथा रेखांकित करती है। समकालीन सन्दर्भों में यह पुस्तक अत्यधिक महत्त्वपूर्ण हो उठती है।

In late eighteenth century India, an obscure king who ruled over Huseypur in northwest Bihar, challenged the might of the British. When overpowered by the East India Company forces, he escaped into the jungles of Gorakhpur, raised a people’s army and fought a guerilla war against them for nearly thirty years. Beaten many times, he always bounced back and did not surrender ever. He was Maharaja Fateh Bahadur Sahi. A warrior, patriot and innovator, Sahi visualised the dangers of impending imperialism and rose to meet the challenge. He devised new war logistics and resorted to guerilla warfare, including ascetics, destitute and bandits in his unique army. This happened years before the Indian Revolt of 1857 and the revolutions in America and France. Mainstream history is yet to look at him, but in the middle-Ganga valley, Sahi is remembered as a folk hero and a people’s king. This work is an effort to unravel Sahi’s unusual life.
