Prema Jayakumar provides the English translation of S.K. Pottekkar's acclaimed Malayalam novel, ' Oru Deshanthinte Katha, ' published by Sahitya Akademi in 2015. Set during British India, the story begins with Sreedharan's return to his hometown after more than 40 years. He is dropped near a petrol overhead tank on the site of his teenage love's house. He recounts the lives of the residents of Athiranippadam. The novel is segmented into five parts: childhood, early youth, teenage years, and a final section called "marmarangal." It features a story told by Velu Mooper, who witnesses events after Sreedharan's father's death, following his extensive travels to North India, Africa, and Europe. Throughout the story, he encounters individuals who leave lasting impressions from different stages of life, including Emma from Switzerland, a Bengali Babu, his half-brothers Kunhappu and Gopalettan (who caused him suffering by contracting syphilis), the mother goddess psyche of a Tamil Brahmin woman, with whom he longs, a girl who loved him unrequitedly before dying of tuberculosis, pranks with the " Supper Circuit Set, " lost loves, profound loneliness, his father's legendary life, and his journeys across continents. He started by dropping off his widowed mother at her family's home, initially at Elanhippoyil, then heading to Bombay- a solitary voyage into the vast, bewildering world, as SKP describes. This haunting autobiographical novel spans about 60 years of history, reflecting on themes of memory, nostalgia, hardship, dreams, and numbness. It concludes with a monologue: "Forgive me, the representative of the new generation of Athiranippadam, forgive me for trespassing into your land, and consider me merely an antique collector, a non-native!"

The novel “Teen Batti Ke Rama” brings to light the unseen and untold world of metropolitan Mumbai—a world that, despite being far removed from glamour and glitter, remains an integral part of it. Its backdrop is set around Walkeshwar, a prestigious and affluent locality in South Mumbai, where, on the one hand, there is the serene world of the Parsi community and the grand mansions of the wealthy, and on the other hand, the struggle-filled lives of the domestic workers who serve in these very households. The author, Ali Imam Naqvi, has portrayed the lives of these domestic workers—male servants locally known as “Rama,” and female helpers referred to as “Bai” or “Aya”—with remarkable subtlety and sensitivity. One of the most striking features of the novel is its language, which employs Mumbai’s distinctive “tapori” slang in a natural and precise manner, bringing the narrative vividly to life. This work not only tells the story of a neglected section of society but also reveals the emotions, struggles, and realities hidden within them. वैकल्य अर्थात् विकलता। कुष्ठरोग पर आधारित हिंदी में संभवतः यह पहला क्लासिकल और मूल ललित शैली में लिखा गया उपन्यास है। इसने कुष्ठ रोगियों के पुनर्वास और उपचार को लेकर समाज में लोगों की आँखें खोलने का काम किया है। उपन्यास का कथानक अंतर्मन को छू लेता है। विषय बहुत ही हृदयस्पर्शी और दिलचस्प है। यह दो महापुरुषों के मौन संघर्ष की गाथा है। एक वह जो, समाजसेवी हैं, कुष्ठरोगियों के लिए आश्रम व्यवस्था की बात करते हैं, तो दूसरे वह, जो प्रख्यात डॉक्टर हैं, अस्पताल व्यवस्था की बात करते हैं और रोगियों का इलाज घर से ही होना चाहिए—इसका पुरजोर समर्थन करते हैं। कुल मिलाकर कुष्ठरोग को लेकर वैज्ञानिक और सामाजिक दृष्टिकोण के बीच की यह गहरी खाई सशक्त कथ्य के ताने-बाने से बुनी एक करुण-गाथा है। दोनों महापुरुषों की पत्नियों का अपने पति और उनके कार्य के प्रति त्याग और समर्पण की कहानी भी गजब की है। कुष्ठरोग को महारोग के नाम से भी जाना जाता है, जिसके प्रति लोगों के मन में कई प्रकार के भ्रम, भय और अंधविश्वासी भावनाएँ थीं। इस रोग के संसर्ग की स्थिति, टीके का आविष्कार, उपलब्ध दवाइयाँ, देश-विदेश के अनुसंधानकर्ताओं की मान्यताएँ, सरकारी रवैया, रोगियों का देश निकाला, पाप-पुण्य जैसे मुद्दों को लेकर यह उपन्यास वैचारिक द्वंद्व पेश कर जनजागरण की स्थिति पैदा करता है।

प्रस्तुत उपन्यास ह्रासशील सामन्तवाद को उसके सम्पूर्ण घिनौने पहलुओं के साथ, बड़ी बारीकी से हमारे समक्ष पेश करता है। इस ह्रासशील सामन्तवाद को उसकी सारी सड़ांध के साथ हम बड़े सरकार के चरित्र, उनके क्रियाकलापों, जो उनके अन्तःपुर से लेकर बाहर के परिवेश तक फैले हुए हैं, सामन्ती साम्राजी साँठ-गाँठ और उसके शिकार साधारण जनों की ज़िन्दगी तथा नरक की इस ज़िन्दगी से मुक्त होने की उनकी कोशिशों तथा मुक्त न हो पाने की स्थिति में उनकी छटपटाहट, प्रतिहिंसा आदि में देखते हैं। भैरव जी ने इस सारे परिदृश्य को यथार्थ के सही आलोक में बारीकी के साथ देखा और चित्रित किया है।

‘राह दर बदर’ गोविन्द मिश्र का नया उपन्यास है जिसे हम उपन्यास विधा के सन्दर्भ में भी एक ‘नया उपन्यास’ कह सकते हैं। जो चीज़ इसे एक औपन्यासिक कृति बनाती है वह किसी एक पात्र की केन्द्रीय अथवा आद्योपान्त उपस्थिति नहीं बल्कि एक ‘थीम’ का क्रमशः विकास है। इस थीम का ताल्लुक़ भारतीय स्त्री से, उसके अ‌‌स्मिता-बोध की पिछली आधी सदी से भी ज़्यादा लम्बी यात्रा से है। गोविन्द मिश्र स्वयं इसे ‘मध्यवर्गीय भारतीय नारी की अन्तश्चेतना का 1940 से 2020 तक का क्रमिक विकास’ कहते हैं और यह भी कि इसी के चलते यह कृति जितनी साहित्यिक है, उतनी ही समाजशास्त्रीय भी। भारतीय स्त्री ने पिछली सदी के उत्तरार्द्ध और मौजूदा सदी के अब तक के वर्षों में एक लम्बा सफ़र अपने भीतर भी किया है, और समाज के सार्वजनिक स्पेस में भी। परिवार और विवाह के स्वरूप में भी काफ़ी बदलाव आया है, लेकिन शायद उतना नहीं, जितना गुणात्मक परिवर्तन भारतीय स्त्री की प्राथमिकताओं में आया है। यह उपन्यास इस परिवर्तन की धारा को रेखांकित करते हुए भविष्य के विषय में भी कुछ प्रश्न छोड़ता है, जो स्त्री के साथ समाज के लिए भी विचारणीय हैं, और पुरुष के लिए भी। एक ‌दिलचस्प और विचारोत्तेजक कथा-कृति!

‘चतुरंग’ मूलत: जीवन के प्रयोजनों और उनकी उपलब्धि के बीच अनिर्णीत संघर्ष का कथा-प्रयोग है। अब तक हुई तमाम बौद्धिक व्याख्याओं की पहुँच के परे इस संघर्ष का प्रारम्भ कहीं भौतिक परिवेश में दिखाई देता है, कहीं तर्क और विवेक की जुगलबन्दी में और कहीं मनो-जगत में पलती आत्म-प्रताड़णा में; और तीनों ही स्रोतों से यह हमारे आधुनिक विचार-जगत में प्रवेश करता दिखता है। शचीश, श्रीविलास, दामिनी और लीलानन्द स्वामी इसे अपने-अपने स्तर पर जीते हैं—अध्यात्म और भक्ति के दिशाहारा आवेग में, दैहिक प्रेम की तृषार्त-भीरु गुफाओं में, जीवन के भीतर, जीवन के बाहर, प्रभंजन के व्यामोह से घिरे-घिरे। ताऊ जी (जगमोहन) इस कथा को रवीन्द्रनाथ की तत्कालीन सामाजिक चिन्ताओं से जोड़ते हैं, देहरी लाँघने की व्याकुलता तक।

सुविख्यात बांग्ला उपन्यासकार ताराशंकर बंद्योपाध्याय की यह पुस्तक कथावस्तु और रचना-शिल्प की दृष्टि से एक अनूठी और मार्मिक कथाकृति है। माता-पिताविहीन नीरजा नामक एक बालिका का जैसा चरित्र-चित्रण यहाँ हुआ है, वह सिर्फ़ तारा बाबू जैसे कथाकार ही कर सकते हैं। पशुवत् मनुष्यों के लोभ, कुत्सा और समाज की कुरूपताओं से अनथक संघर्ष करती हुई नीरजा मानो तेजोद्दीप्त भारतीय नारी का प्रतीक बनकर उभरती है, जिसमें परदुख-कातरता भी है और उसके लिए आत्मोत्सर्ग की भावना भी। एक ओर वह अनाचार से जूझने के लिए जलती हुई मशाल है, तो दूसरी ओर उसके अन्तर में प्रेम की अन्तःसलिला प्रवाहित हो रही है। नारी की आत्मनिर्भरता उसके जीवन का मूलमंत्र है, जिसे वह सम्मानपूर्वक जीने की पहली शर्त मानती है। वस्तुतः तारा बाबू ने इस उपन्यास में स्थितियों और परिवेश को नाटकीयता प्रदान करके विलक्षण प्रभाव उत्पन्न किया है।

बंगला-साहित्य के मूर्धन्य रचनाकार सुनील गंगोपाध्याय की यह कृति उनके महत्त्वपूर्ण औपन्यासिक रचनाओं में शुमार है। इसमें दो परिवारों की कहानी समानान्तर धाराओं में चलती है। एक परिवार पूँजीपति शिवशंकर लाहिड़ी का है जिसने अपने एक सिनेमा हॉल को अपनी ज़िद के कारण बन्द कर दिया है और हड़ताली कर्मचारियों के आगे झुकने को किसी भी हालत में तैयार नहीं है। दूसरी कहानी उसी सिनेमा हॉल के एक कर्मचारी रमेश मुखर्जी के परिवार की है जो इस हड़ताल के कारण खाने-पीने की बुनियादी सुविधाओं के लिए मोहताज है। लेकिन विडम्बना यह है कि दोनों के बेटे अपने-अपने पिताओं से झगड़ा करके अलग रह रहे हैं। लेखक ने इस दोनों परिवारों की स्थितियों के तनाव को इतने संवेदनशील रूप से रचा है कि वह पाठकों में एक रचनात्मक बेचैनी भर देता है। इन दोनों परिवारों की कहानियों के बीच धीमी मगर विरल लय में एक प्रेम कहानी की अन्तःसलिल धारा बढ़ रही है जो मीठी आँच की तरह प्यारी और सुखद लगती है। स्थितियों, चरित्रों और घटनाओं का रचनात्मक संयोजन पाठकों को अपने बहाव में इस तरह लिए चलता है कि पाठक इस कृति को एक ही बैठक में पूरा पढ़ जाना चाहेंगे, ऐसा हमारा विश्वास है।

प्रेम की न कोई भाषा होती है, न परिभाषा, न सीमाएँ उसे सीमित करती हैं, न दूरियाँ उसे ओझल करती हैं, वह दूरी जीवन और मृत्यु भी क्यों न हों! ‘पूर्णमिदम्’ के बाद सरोज कौशिक का यह उपन्यास ‘पूर्णमदः’; अलग-अलग होते हुए भी ये दोनों उपन्यास एक-दूसरे से जुड़े हुए हैं। वह अध्यात्म के आलोक में प्रकाशमान, तो यह जीवन के संघर्षों ने बीच के पवित्र दीप को अपने सचेत आत्मबोध की ओट में बचाते हुए एक सघन यात्रा। ‘पूर्णमदः’ में पीड़ा है, अतीत के दुखते घाव हैं, स्मृति में कौंधती विविधवर्णी छवियाँ हैं, चहुँओर व्याप्त कालिमा में अपने अन्तस की पवित्रता को निष्कलंक रखते अपने मूल्यों को बचाने का संघर्ष है; और जीवन तथा समाज में मनुष्य की आत्मा को कचोटतीं, खोखला करतीं अपूर्णताओं के बरक्स पूर्ण को बचाने और अगली पीढ़ियों के लिए संरक्षित रखने की कामना है। भावनाओं के सघन चित्रों से परिपूर्ण एक पठनीय औपन्यासिक कृति।

Raghavendra Patil (b.1951) belongs to the postmodernist group of writers in Kannada. Like his predecessors, U.R. Anantamurthy, Yahvant Chittal, Tejasvi and Shantinath Desai, he arrived at the novel through the short story. The Chariot (Teru), which won him the Sahitya Akademi Award, is his second novel. Though Patil belongs to the postmodern era, he does not share the thematic concerns or techniques of Western postmodernism. He is closer to the nativistic movement, which has already produced major writers like Chandrasekhar Kambar and Kum. Veerabhadrappa. He has also inherited some of the qualities of his famous uncle Anandakanda, such as an interest in local history and closeness to rural life. The story that Patil tells in The Chariot spans more than a hundred and fifty years, beginning with the years when the Peshva extended his rule to North Karnataka and ending with the years after the Emergency, and it relates to the Belagavi region, with its epicentre in an imagined but fully realised village named Dharamanatti. The novel offers two images of Teru, which in Kannada means both the chariot and the festival associated with it. The first is centred on an atrocious human sacrifice made in the name of religion by an autocratic ruler, and the second, distanced in time by a century and a half, mirrors the change from the feudal order to a democratic one, where religious superstition and feudal practices have been replaced by scepticism and the politics of power. The novel is remarkable for its innovative technique, which handles myth and reality with equal success.
