- Description: ‘काठ का उल्लू’ को ‘दोआबा’ पत्रिका में प्रकाशित करते हुए, सम्पादकीय के अन्तर्गत एक महत्त्वपूर्ण टिप्पणी की गई थी कि यह उपन्यास अपनी थीम के कारण पाठकों के बीच लोकप्रिय होगा। प्रश्न उठता है कि इस उपन्यास की ‘थीम’ है क्या? निःसन्देह इसका उत्तर एक शब्द में नहीं दिया जा सकता है। ‘काठ के उल्लू’ की थीम के कई स्तर हैं जो प्याज के छिलके की भाँति परत दर परत खुलते चले जाते हैं। सपनों में पलती नौकरशाही, अभिजात्य वर्ग की ढँकी-छुपी सच्चाई, स्याह-सफेद के बीच खिलवाड़ करती राजनीति... और एक सामान्य-सी लड़की को ‘दलित इकाई’ के रूप में बदल देने की चतुराई। अर्थात इस उपन्यास में हमारे समाज के इतने रंग हैं कि उन सबको मिला कर यदि ‘रंगामेज़ी’ शैली में कोई चित्र बनाया जाए तो वह बदरंग ही होगा, आकर्षक भले हो। जाहिर है कि यह एक जटिल यथार्थ है, जिसे एक छोटे से उपन्यास में व्यक्त कर देना आसान काम नहीं था। मगर, पल्लवी प्रसाद ने उसे बखूबी कर दिखाया है। इस उपन्यास में कई अन्य यथार्थ भी दर्ज हैं। जैसे गाँवों का ‘आधुनिक’ हो जाना, हर व्यक्ति का लगभग ‘आम आदमी’ हो जाना और अन्ततः कृष्णकान्त जैसे महत्वाकांक्षी व्यक्ति का ‘काठ का उल्लू’ बन जाना। उल्लू का पसन्दीदा समय ‘अँधेरा’ पूरे उपन्यास में आदि से अन्त तक छाया हुआ है। मगर लेखिका ने उसमें भी रोशनी की एक ‘झिरी’ देख ली है। वह है एक बूढ़ी स्त्री जो गाँव में रहती है और जो किसी की माँ है, किसी की दादी तो किसी की परदादी। वास्तव में इस ‘झिरी’ ने ही इस उपन्यास को वह सार्थकता बख्शी है, जो उसका मूल उदेश्य प्रतीत होती है। पल्लवी प्रसाद का यह उपन्यास ऐसे समय में आया है जबकि अभिजात्य वर्ग में ही नहीं बल्कि सामान्य जीवन में भी पारिवारिक सम्बन्धों की दीवारें दरक रही हैं। इसलिए इस उपन्यास का अपना अलग ही महत्त्व है। —अब्दुल बिस्मिल्लाह

- Description: समकालीन लेखन में शिवेन्द्र की विशिष्ट पहचान ऐसे कहानीकार के रूप में है जो चित्र-विचित्र घटनाओं वाली पुराकथाओं और परीकथाओं के ढब-ढाँचे में ठेठ आधुनिक जीवन के प्रश्नों और संकटों से हमें रू-ब-रू कराता है। पिछले लगभग सवा सौ सालों से हिन्दी कहानी अपनी बात कहने के लिए जिस ‘वेरिसिमिलीट्यूड’ पर, विश्वसनीय अंकन की जिस विधि पर भरोसा करती आई है, उसे तोड़ या छोड़ कर शिवेन्द्र एक वयस्क आधुनिक पाठक को झटका देते हैं; ऐसा लगता है कि वे उसे एकबारगी आधुनिक के मुक़ाबले पुरातन या वयस्क के मुक़ाबले बालसुलभ कथा-आस्वाद की ओर ले जाना चाहते हैं, लेकिन उनके द्वारा सम्बोधित सवाल इस भ्रम की गुंजाइश नहीं रहने देते। उनके यहाँ अपनी जाति बताकर प्यार से वंचित हो जाने वाले और सीवर में ही ज़िन्दगी खपा देने वाले दलित हैं; ‘किसी ऊबे हुए बन्दर की तरह फ़ेसबुक की एक दीवाल से दूसरी दीवाल पर यूँ ही कूदने’ वाले बेरोज़गार हैं; गेम न खेलने पर गोली मार देने वाले कमांडोज़ से डर कर अपने-अपने मोबाइल में घुसे, अपने आसपास की दुनिया से नावाक़िफ़ लोग हैं; आज़ादी प्रतीत होने वाली नई ग़ुलामी है; ऐसे चुनाव हैं जिनमें जनता उन्हीं को चुनती है जिनकी सरकार बनाने का ठेका बड़ी कम्पनियों ने लिया है; ‘बिना कुछ सोचे-समझे ऐसी चीज़ों को पाने में नष्ट होती’ ज़िन्दगियाँ हैं ‘जिनकी असल में कोई ज़रूरत ही नहीं’; और सबसे बड़ी बात, दूसरों की आज़ादी छीनने वालों और आज़ादी चाहने वालों के बीच का संघर्ष है जिसमें एक ओर तानाशाहों से लेकर उनके पक्ष के विचारक, हत्यारे और आज की दुनिया में मसीहा की तरह पूजे जानेवाले धनकुबेर तक हैं, तो दूसरी ओर बेरोज़गार, मज़लूम और अपने को बेचने के लिए तैयार न होने वाले चैतन्य लोग। हमारे इस वर्तमान को शिवेन्द्र जिस कल्पनाशीलता के साथ कहानी में लाना सम्भव करते हैं, वह आपको बार-बार चकित करती है और आप साश्चर्य कहानी के इस आदिम गुण की वापसी के साक्षी बनते हैं। वे निस्सन्देह हमारे समय के सबसे उर्वर रचनात्मक मस्तिष्कों में से एक हैं। —संजीव कुमार
