- Description: कुसुम खेमानी का यह उपन्यास ‘लालबत्ती की अमृतकन्याएँ’ कथावस्तु की दृष्टि से एक साहसिक क़दम माना जा सकता है क्योंकि यह वह इलाक़ा है जिस पर लिखने से हिन्दी लेखकों की क़लम प्राय: गुरेज करती है। फिर भी इस दिशा में कुछ उल्लेखनीय कृतियाँ तो देखने को मिलती ही हैं, यह उपन्यास उसी शृंखला की नवीनतम कड़ी है। यों उपन्यास कोलकाता के ‘सोनागाछी’ पर केन्द्रित है लेकिन यह लालबत्ती गली हर शहर और हर क़स्बे में होती है और अन्त:सलिला की तरह समाज के अन्तर में बहती रहती है। समाज इन स्त्रियों को विषकन्याएँ मानता है पर दरअसल ये समाज के भीतर छिपी गन्दगी को फैलने से रोकने के साथ ही उसका परिष्करण भी करती हैं और इस बिन्दु पर आकर ये ‘विषकन्याएँ’ अमृतकन्याओं में बदल जाती हैं। उपन्यास की कथा विष से अमृत की ओर बढ़ने की संघर्ष-गाथा है क्योंकि उपन्यास की पात्र वे स्त्रियाँ हैं, जिन्हें अमृत से वंचित कर ‘विष’ की ओर ढकेल दिया गया है। उपन्यास में इन स्त्रियों की रोज़-रोज़ की प्रताड़ना, अपमान और हत्या जैसे रोंगटे खड़े कर देनेवाले प्रसंगों का चित्रण कुसुम खेमानी ने जिस भाषाई कौशल और शिल्पगत दक्षता के साथ किया है, वह देखते ही बनता है। पहला पन्ना खोलते ही उपन्यास किसी रोचक फ़िल्म की तरह हमारे सामने खुलता चला जाता है। यह बतरस शैली डॉ. कुसुम खेमानी का अपना निजी और विशिष्ट कौशल है जो पाठकों को अन्त तक बाँधे रखता है। उपन्यास की कथा में सहारा देनेवाले हाथों का सन्दर्भ ही नहीं है बल्कि इन पतिता स्त्रियों द्वारा गिरकर ख़ुद उठने और सँभलने की कोशिशों का कलात्मक मंथन भी है। ‘लावण्यदेवी’, ‘जड़िया बाई’ और ‘गाथा रामभतेरी’ जैसे उपन्यासों से गुज़रने के बाद, निस्सन्देह यहाँ यह कहा जा सकता है कि इतनी ख़ूबियों से भरा-पूरा यह उपन्यास अगर किसी का हो सकता है, तो वह सिर्फ़ कुसुम खेमानी का हो सकता है। —एकान्त श्रीवास्

- Description: भरे राजदरबार में द्रौपदी ने कुरुवंश के अनेक बड़े-बुजुर्गों और दुर्योधन से सवाल पूछा था, ‘‘मेरे पति पहले मुझे हारे थे कि अपने आपको?’’ तब उसका अपमान किया गया था। उसी द्रौपदी ने वर्षों तक निरंतर बिना कोई प्रश्न पूछे पाँच पतियों की सेवा की थी, इस बारे में कहीं किसी ने कोई उल्लेख तक नहीं किया है। समाज की यह संपूर्ण व्यवस्था स्त्री-विरोधी क्यों है? स्त्री का स्वभाव एक ही पुरुष के साथ बँधकर रहना और सुरक्षा की अपेक्षा करना है, परंतु वह सहन कर सके, उससे अधिक अत्याचार अगर उस पर किए जाएँ तो उसमें से जागा विद्रोह सर्वनाश करता है। स्त्री का विद्रोह समाज को बदलता है, बदलने के लिए मजबूर करता है। जिस प्रकार बीज को उगाने के लिए धरती में दबाना पड़ता है, उसी प्रकार दबाई हुई, कुचली हुई स्त्री जमीन फोड़कर अंकुर की तरह फूटती है, विकसित होती है और विशालकाय वृक्ष बन जाती है, जबकि पुरुष मिट्टी की तरह वहीं-का-वहीं रह जाता है। प्रस्तुत पुस्तक में द्रौपदी के रूप में स्त्रियों की पीड़ा, उनकी मनोव्यथा, उनके सुख अथवा उनकी समझदारी की कथा उनकी जुबानी ही लिखी गई है। पर यह ‘द्रौपदी’ वर्तमान की है, ‘आज’ की है। अभी भी जी रही है—शायद हर स्त्री में! स्त्री-विषयक समस्याओं, विसंगतियों एवं विद्रूपताओं को विश्लेषित करती एक पठनीय कृति।
