- Description: 1960 के आरम्भिक दिनों में मैंने दो मुख्य फ़िल्में (फ़ीचर फ़िल्म) बनाने में मदद की थी और अपने को एक मुख्य फ़िल्म निर्देशन के योग्य मान रहा था। मैं इधर-उधर एक कहानी तलाश रहा था। मेरे मित्र और सहयोगी अरुण कौल ने राजेन्द्र यादव की कहानी ‘सारा आकाश’ का सुझाव दिया। उसकी एक प्रति उनके पास थी, उन्होंने मुझे दे दी। एक शाम मैं उसे एक ही साँस में पढ़ गया और मैं अभिभूत ही था। ‘सारा आकाश’ एक जटिल कथा के रूप में लिखा गया था। लेखक ने सपाट रास्ता नहीं चुना था, इसीलिए इसने मुझे ज़्यादा आकर्षित किया था। दृश्यों को मैंने यथासम्भव वर्णन के निकट रखा है। चूँकि लेखक ने कहानी फ़िल्म के लिए नहीं लिखी थी, अत: उसमें बहुत-सी बातों का विवरण दिया गया है जिनको दृश्यों में रूपान्तरित करना एक चुनौती थी।...ऐसे ही कई स्थान हैं जहाँ नायक अतीत और भविष्य के बारे में बहुत कुछ सोच रहा है। छठे दशक के मध्य में मैंने अनेक यूरोपीय और रूसी फ़िल्में देखी थीं। मुझे ऐसे दृश्य लिखने में इनसे सहायता मिली। पटकथा लिखने के बाद मुझे इसे विक्रम सिंह को दिखाने का अवसर मिला। वे अपने समय में ‘टाइम्स ऑफ़ इंडिया’ के सर्वश्रेष्ठ फ़िल्म आलोचक थे। उन्होंने मेरे प्रयास की सराहना की और मुझे फ़िल्म बनाने के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया। और ‘सारा आकाश’ बन गई। 1970 में ‘फ़िल्मफ़ेयर’ के समारोह में इसे वर्ष की सर्वश्रेष्ठ पटकथा घोषित किया गया। निर्देशन के लिए इसकी सिफ़ारिश राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार के लिए भी की गई। इसके कैमरामैन को सर्वश्रेष्ठ छायाचित्रण के लिए पुरस्कार भी मिला। —बासु चटर्जी

- Description: मातृभूमीविषयीचं प्रेम, गैरवर्तन करणाऱ्यांविषयी चीड, सामाजिक न्यायासाठी अन्यायाविरुद्ध लढण्याची हिंमत, विचारांची स्पष्टता आणि ध्येयासाठी कष्ट आणि संघर्ष करण्याची तयारी असेल, तर अगदी सर्वसामान्य ग्रामीण कुटुंबातून आलेला तरुणही नवख्या शहरी जीवनात स्वत:चं वेगळं स्थान निर्माण करू शकतो. इतकंच नाही, तर हीणकस वृत्तीच्या तथाकथीत उच्चभ्रू मान्यवरांच्या नाकावर टिच्चून तो आपल्या आयुष्यात अत्यंत उंच भरारी घेऊ शकतो. याचाच प्रत्यय देणारी ही आत्मकथा आहे. ती सुरू होते विमानतळावरील हमालीच्या कामापासून. हमाल हा समाजातला सर्वात दुर्लक्षित घटक. पण तो जर चौकस आणि डोळसपणे भोवतालच्या घटनांकडे पाहू लागला आणि जागरूक नागरिक म्हणून रिॲक्ट होऊ लागला तर अनेकांसाठी पळता भुई थोडी होते. गोवा विमानतळावर ‘संत्या कुली'ने हा चमत्कार घडवला होता. त्याची ही त्यानेच सांगितलेली गोष्ट आहे. पत्रकारितेचं शिक्षण घेण्यासाठी लागणारे पैसे जमा करता यावेत आणि मुख्य म्हणजे सेलिब्रिटींना प्रत्यक्ष बघता यावं म्हणून संतोष मळवीकर यांनी हमालीच्या कामापासून आपल्या जीवनप्रवासाची सुरूवात केली होती. तो प्रवास आता भवतालच्या गैरकारभाराविरुद्ध आवाज उठवणारा सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता ते प्रथितयश वकील इथपर्यंत पोचला आहे. मुख्य म्हणजे हा साराच प्रवास अत्यंत रोमहर्षक आणि संघर्षशील घटनांनी भरलेला आहे. त्यातील ऐन उमेदीच्या काळात ‘कुली' म्हणून जगताना पुकारलेला व्यवस्थेविरुद्धचा संघर्ष या पुस्तकात आला आहे. साधा कुली म्हणून जगतानाही एखादा व्यक्ती किती नेक काम करू शकतो याची ही संघर्षकथा अनेकांसाठी प्रेरक ठरेल आणि त्याचा पुढचा प्रवास जाणून घेण्याची उत्सूकताही वाढवेल.
