Agnisakshi (meaning, With Fire As Witness) is a Malayalam novel written by Lalithambika Antharjanam. Originally serialised in Mathrubhumi Illustrated Weekly, it was published as a book by Current Books in 1976. It tells the story of a Nambudiri woman, who is drawn into the struggle for social and political emancipation but cannot easily shake off the chains of tradition that bind her. The novel was concerned with implied criticism of aspects of social structure and behaviour. Thethikutty (Devaki or Sumitarananda) is married to Unni Nambudiri of the well-known Brahmin family named Manampilly Illam. He is young, virtuous, and loving but too orthodox to be the husband of a woman with Thethikutty's views. Feeling frustrated, Thethikutty leaves him once and forever and reaches her paternal home. Unni lives the life of a piety, is branded as an eccentric and dies. Thethikutty, meanwhile, finds no peace anywhere. At last, in the Himalayas, she meets her old friend and Unni's half-sister, the sixty-year-old Mrs K.M.K. Nair (Thankam). She finds her unborn son in Mrs. Nair's son and hands over her wedding pendant to her daughter with the request to cherish it with due regard.

 प्रज्ञा पांडेय के इस उपन्यास में वल्लरी और उसकी बेटी अन्ना की यह कथा सिर्फ़ माँ-बेटी की कथा नहीं है। मानवीय संबंधों के सर्पिल पेंचदार गलियों से गुजरती इस कथा में मन के अनगिन गवाक्ष हैं और इन गवाक्षों में छिपा जीवन पाठकों को विलक्षण जीवनानुभव सौंपता है। प्रेम में चोटिल होने के बावजूद वल्लरी अपने गर्भ की रक्षा करती है और अन्ना को जन्म देती है। वह इसे अपने लिए केवल प्रकृति का उपहार नहीं मानती, बल्कि स्त्री-जीवन की गरिमा की रक्षा के लिए लिया गया निर्णय मानती है. अन्ना का जन्म उसके अंतःकरण को नई शक्ति देता है.

The Hell of Heaven’ is one of the most famous novels of Shanta Kumar, which has a multiplicity of themes ranging from petty politics to the communal nationalism which represents integrity of character, sense of belonging and commitment to the human cause. सभ्यता के वर्तमान पड़ाव पर जितनी उपेक्षा किसान और किसानी की हो रही है उतनी शायद ही किसी और की हुई हो। देश में तीन लाख से ज्यादा किसान आत्महत्या कर चुके हैं और अस्सी लाख से ज्यादा किसानी से किनारा कर चुके हैं। इसी भीषण यथार्थ की पृष्ठभूमि पर रचा गया है यह उपन्यास ‘फाँस’। कभी प्रेमचन्द ने ‘गोदान’ के जरिये भारतीय ग्रामीण तंत्र के शोषणकारी ढाँचे और किसानों के जीवन-संघर्ष को उजागर किया था, उसके वर्षों बाद, ‘फाँस’ हिन्दी का किंचित पहला उपन्यास है जो किसानों की दारुण स्थिति को उसकी व्यापकता में सामने लाता है। इस उपन्यास में विदर्भ (महाराष्ट्र) के किसानों की कहानी गई है जिनके एक कन्धे पर घर-परिवार का उत्तरदायित्व है तो दूसरे कन्धे पर किसानी का। दोनों उत्तरदायित्व एक-दूसरे से नाभिनालबद्ध—फसल होगी तो घर-परिवार चलेगा, नहीं होगी तो पेट भरना मुश्किल, बच्चों की पढ़ाई-लिखाई दुश्वार, हारी-बीमारी का इलाज असम्भव। फिर किसानी भी तो सिर्फ मेहनत नहीं माँगती; उसमें भी पैसा चाहिए। पैसा जुटता है कर्ज से। इस तरह फर्ज से कर्ज तक एक ऐसा व्यूह बनता है जिसमें पड़ने के बाद किसान निरुपाय और अन्तत: आत्महंता हो जाता है। इस दुखान्त को यह उपन्यास पूरी सूक्ष्मता से दर्ज करता है और यह सोचने को विवश करता है कि क्या यह त्रासदी केवल किसानों की है अथवा एक समूची सभ्यता, एक समूचे समाज की? अत्यन्त समसामयिक और ज्वलन्त विषय पर एक अवश्य पठनीय कृति!

‘नरक-दर-नरक’ ममता कालिया के चर्चित उपन्यासों में से एक है। अपने समय का सांगोपांग चित्रण करने वाली यह रचना पाठकों और आलोचकों दोनों की प्रिय रही है। उपन्यास के केन्द्र में जगन और उषा हैं जो एक तरह से आज़ादी के बाद पैदा हुई युवा पीढ़ी का भी प्रतिनिधित्व करते हैं। अच्छा रोज़गार और बेहतर जीवन उनके ऐसे सपने हैं जो अपनी योग्यता के बावजूद उन्हें अपनी पहुँच से दूर दिखाई देते हैं। प्रेम और उसके बाद तुरन्त ही शादी के बाद उनका प्यार ही है जो उन्हें राहत देता है, नहीं तो जगन के कॉलेज में वहाँ की राजनीति, मामूली-सी तनख़्वाह और उषा के सामने घर को सँभालने की चुनौती उन्हें तनाव में ही रखती है। हारकर वे मुम्बई से इलाहाबाद आते हैं और वहाँ जगन एक प्रेस शुरू करता है। लेकिन चुनौतियाँ यहाँ भी कम नहीं। नया शहर, नया काम और फिर एक बच्चा भी उनके जीवन में आ जाता है। दाम्पत्य जीवन और सामाजिक–राजनीतिक तनावों को यह उपन्यास अत्यन्त कुशलता से चित्रित करता है। भाषा की चुस्ती, संवाद और सूक्ष्म मनोभावों का अंकन कहीं भी पाठक को भटकने नहीं देता।

जरूरी नहीं कि तूफान से सब कुछ अस्त-व्यस्त ही हो जाए। तूफान से रास्ता साफ भी होता है। यह सकारात्मकता मेरे भीतर उठते तूफानों से दृश्यों को साफ करने का काम करती है, शब्दों की ताकत से परिचय कराती है। शब्द घाव भी करते हैं और घाव को भरते भी हैं, क्योंकि शब्दों का अपना तापमान होता है, उनमें कू​लिंग और हीटिंग का सन्तुलन बनाना लेखकीय दायित्व होता है। इसलिए जब भी मैं कहने के लिए उतावली हुई हूँ शब्दों का चयन मैंने संभल कर किया है। भावनाओं, संवेदनाओं और अनुभवों ने जो तानाबाना बुना उससे कहानी को आकार दिया है। कहानियों में ठहरे हुए पलों की कहानी है, उम्र से परे वैचारिक मित्रता है, जिन्दगी के बदलते हुए दृश्य हैं, जानने-मानने-चाहने जैसे विरोधाभास हैं। गलत दिशा में भाग रही भीड़ का हिस्सा न बनकर मैंने सही दिशा मे अकेले चलने को बेहतर माना है।

कुछ दिन इसी प्रकार और बीत गए। अभिवादनों का आदान-प्रदान हो गया। और एक दिन जब सायंकाल को दीये जल चुके थे, तभी अलका लौट रही थी। ऊपर से मणिकलाल ने धीरे से कहा— ‘‘भाभी?’’ वह ठिठक गई और उसने भी धीरे से कहा, ‘जी’। ‘‘आप से एक-दो मिनट बात करना चाहता हूँ?’’ मणिकलाल ने नम्रता भरे शब्दों से कहा। ‘‘इस समय?’’ अलका ने घूँघट में से ही पूछा। ‘‘हाँ। अभी! केवल दो मिनट! आप तनिक मेरे पास इधर आ जाए!’’ ‘‘क्या बात है यहीं कह दीजिए!’’ अलका ने वहीं खड़े-खड़े कहा। ‘‘भाभी ये रास्ता है यहाँ ठीक नहीं है, आप डरिए नहीं। तनिक इधर आ जाओ।’’ कहकर वह द्वार से भीतर को बैठक में चला गया। अलका ने मन-ही-मन सोचा कदाचित् आज ही वह दिन आ गया, जिसकी उसे आशंका थी। उसने सोचा ‘नहीं!’ इसके प्रस्ताव को ठुकरा दो, इसे स्पष्ट मना कर दो। पर उन वस्त्रों और खाद्य पदार्थों के दबाव ने उसे ऐसा नहीं करने दिया और वह अपने स्थान से थोड़ी सी हटकर बैठक के द्वार के निकट खड़ी हो गई बोली—‘‘कहिए?’’ ‘‘देखिए, आप घबराएँ नहीं, अंदर ही आ जाएँ!

किसान नहीं होंगे तो हम नहीं होंगे। खेती नहीं होगी तो ये शहर नहीं होंगे जहाँ हम उस विशाल आबादी से आँखें चुराए इत्मीनान से रहते हैं, जिस आबादी का सब कुछ खेती पर निर्भर है, वे लोग जो अन्न उगाते हैं, लेकिन अकसर खाली पेट सोते हैं, कर्ज लेते हैं और फिर आत्महत्या कर लेते हैं। हैरानी की बात है कि इतने महत्त्वपूर्ण क्षेत्र पर न तो नीति-निर्माताओं का फोकस है, न ही नागरिक चेतना का। ‘किसानी की कहानी : बेटी के लिए’ हमारा ध्यान उस ओर खींचती है, और एकदम अलग और नए ढंग से। किताबों, खबरों और निजी अनुभवों के माध्यम से आजादी से पहले और बाद के वक्तों पर नजर डालते हुए यह किताब भारतीय किसान और खेती की पीड़ा को हमारी सोच के केन्द्र में ला देती है।
