He started by dropping off his widowed mother at her family's home, initially at Elanhippoyil, then heading to Bombay- a solitary voyage into the vast, bewildering world, as SKP describes. This haunting autobiographical novel spans about 60 years of history, reflecting on themes of memory, nostalgia, hardship, dreams, and numbness. It concludes with a monologue: "Forgive me, the representative of the new generation of Athiranippadam, forgive me for trespassing into your land, and consider me merely an antique collector, a non-native!"

- Description: ‘प्रेम एक पालतू बिल्ली’ की कहानियों में उदासी से भरी कायनात की गहरी तफ़सीलें चली आई हैं और इस दुनिया के जोखिम भरे अनुभव, उनके यथार्थ-बोध का हिस्सा बनते गए हैं। इनमें दर्ज हुए विषाद की वजह खोजें तो वहाँ हमें, भीतर-बाहर से जूझती हुई ज़िन्दगी मिलेगी। स्त्री-पुरुष दोनों के किरदार, अपनी रूह में जागे हुए-से शैतानी फ़ितरतों से मुकाबले में दिखाई देंगे। तब ‘शैतानी तुरही’ जैसी कहानी में उभर आए अँधेरे, कीच और लीच ही नहीं बल्कि गहन अकेलेपन को भी आप बहुत सारे सवालों की नींव उधेड़ते हुए महसूस करेंगे। ये कहानियाँ जीवन में पैवस्त हुए नैतिक-अनैतिक से कहीं अधिक मनुष्य होने के ज़रूरी आधारों को पुकारती हैं। इस तरह वे इनसानी रूह को रोगिल बना देने पर आमादा हुए अँधेरे के ज़हर से टकरा रही हैं और यह ज़हर कई रंग का है, किन्तु जहाँ भी है, दारुण है। इसके भीतर जीवन को अवरुद्ध करने वाला पतन है, असम्भव क़िस्म की वारदातें हैं, जीवन की सुन्दरताओं को नष्ट कर जाने वाला पाप-बोध का विषैला पुष्प है, और है मनुष्यता की ओर से जारी हुई एक अनवरत जिरह, जो न होती तो ये कहानियाँ अधूरी रह जातीं। निधि अग्रवाल की कहानियाँ, यथार्थ के प्रचलित इलाक़ों की कहानियाँ नहीं हैं और न ही शिल्प की ज़रा-सी भी सुस्ती इन्हें मंज़ूर है। ये जीवन के भीतर और बाहर को शिद्दत-भरी संवेदनशीलता में रचने में कामयाब हुई कहानियाँ हैं, जिनकी भाषा की भीतर झाँकने वाली ख़ूबी बेजोड़ है।

- Description: आठ साल की एक लड़की सांतो दोमिंगो में अपने पिता–पापू–का इन्तज़ार करती है। यह इन्तज़ार उसे एक लम्बी और दर्दनाक मौत जैसा लगता है लेकिन वह राह देखती है कि पापू अमेरिका से आएँगे और अपनी दौलत और शोहरत की शानदार उपलब्धियों—चमचमाती नई कारों, पोलो शर्टों, सोने की चेन और सुन्दर जूतों से उसे अभिभूत कर देंगे। जब पापू आते हैं तो वह उसे फ़िल्म ‘फ़्राइडे द थर्टींथ’ के जेसन जैसे मालूम पड़ते हैं—स्मार्ट, चतुर और निर्मम। वे एक डोमिनिकन माफ़िया बॉस हैं, एक ड्रग डीलर, एक ऐसा शख़्स जो अविश्वसनीय रूप से ख़तरनाक है, लेकिन इससे उसकी बेटी ख़ुद को बेहद ताक़तवर और जीवन्त महसूस करती है। लड़की के जीवन में पापू आते हैं, ग़ायब हो जाते हैं और फिर एक बार और प्रकट होते हैं पैसे, गाड़ियों और मार-तमाम तोहफ़ों से लदे हुए, प्रेमिकाओं से घिरे हुए। सांतो दोमिंगो और अपने पिता के साथ की गई अमेरिका की जगर-मगर यात्राओं के बीच विभाजित, एक लड़की की बचपन की यादों को समेटे यह उपन्यास एक बेटी के प्यार के अलावा अपराध और मर्दानगी के आकर्षण और बड़ों की दुनिया की हिंसा का कभी न भूलने वाला चित्र पेश करता है। एक बच्ची की कल्पना के साथ व्यंग्य और विज्ञान-कथा के साथ ख़ौफ़ का कुशल मिश्रण, कैरेबियाई संस्कृति की पृष्ठभूमि में बुनी गई इस कहानी को अत्यन्त प्रभावी बना देता है।
