- Description: Dalpat Chauhan's first novel Homeland (Malak in Gujarati) is set in rural northern Gujarat in pre-independence India and tells the tale of a community of Dalits who eke out an existence on the margins of an upper castr village. They belong to the Vankar caste and are considered 'Untouchables' by the upper caste villagers. Many of them because of small loans taken by them or their forefathers from the village landlords are 'bonded' for generations to them and have to provide them with free labour. Their women are sexually harassed and at times raped and murdered. Yet these Vankars are attached to their Malak and are traumatised when they are forced to leave it due to the threat of uppar caste reprisal over the relationship between a young Dalit man and upper castemarried woman. Homeland is writtten in what be termed the postcolonial narrative style, with interior monologues, interventions of the past into the present and alternative voices. The language is a judicious mix of Northern Gujarat rural dialect and standard Gujarati. This gives the novel a very authentic and contemporary edge.

- Description: ‘काठ का उल्लू’ को ‘दोआबा’ पत्रिका में प्रकाशित करते हुए, सम्पादकीय के अन्तर्गत एक महत्त्वपूर्ण टिप्पणी की गई थी कि यह उपन्यास अपनी थीम के कारण पाठकों के बीच लोकप्रिय होगा। प्रश्न उठता है कि इस उपन्यास की ‘थीम’ है क्या? निःसन्देह इसका उत्तर एक शब्द में नहीं दिया जा सकता है। ‘काठ के उल्लू’ की थीम के कई स्तर हैं जो प्याज के छिलके की भाँति परत दर परत खुलते चले जाते हैं। सपनों में पलती नौकरशाही, अभिजात्य वर्ग की ढँकी-छुपी सच्चाई, स्याह-सफेद के बीच खिलवाड़ करती राजनीति... और एक सामान्य-सी लड़की को ‘दलित इकाई’ के रूप में बदल देने की चतुराई। अर्थात इस उपन्यास में हमारे समाज के इतने रंग हैं कि उन सबको मिला कर यदि ‘रंगामेज़ी’ शैली में कोई चित्र बनाया जाए तो वह बदरंग ही होगा, आकर्षक भले हो। जाहिर है कि यह एक जटिल यथार्थ है, जिसे एक छोटे से उपन्यास में व्यक्त कर देना आसान काम नहीं था। मगर, पल्लवी प्रसाद ने उसे बखूबी कर दिखाया है। इस उपन्यास में कई अन्य यथार्थ भी दर्ज हैं। जैसे गाँवों का ‘आधुनिक’ हो जाना, हर व्यक्ति का लगभग ‘आम आदमी’ हो जाना और अन्ततः कृष्णकान्त जैसे महत्वाकांक्षी व्यक्ति का ‘काठ का उल्लू’ बन जाना। उल्लू का पसन्दीदा समय ‘अँधेरा’ पूरे उपन्यास में आदि से अन्त तक छाया हुआ है। मगर लेखिका ने उसमें भी रोशनी की एक ‘झिरी’ देख ली है। वह है एक बूढ़ी स्त्री जो गाँव में रहती है और जो किसी की माँ है, किसी की दादी तो किसी की परदादी। वास्तव में इस ‘झिरी’ ने ही इस उपन्यास को वह सार्थकता बख्शी है, जो उसका मूल उदेश्य प्रतीत होती है। पल्लवी प्रसाद का यह उपन्यास ऐसे समय में आया है जबकि अभिजात्य वर्ग में ही नहीं बल्कि सामान्य जीवन में भी पारिवारिक सम्बन्धों की दीवारें दरक रही हैं। इसलिए इस उपन्यास का अपना अलग ही महत्त्व है। —अब्दुल बिस्मिल्लाह

- Description: उपन्यास का महत्त्व दरअसल आजकल भी इसलिए बना हुआ है कि उपन्यास एक समानान्तर जीवन की परिकल्पना करते हैं। इस सन्दर्भ में असग़र वजाहत के उपन्यास ‘कैसी आगी लगाई’ में जीवन की विशद व्याख्या है, जीवन का विस्तार है और तमाम अन्तर्विरोधों के बीच से मानव-गरिमा और श्रेष्ठता के कलात्मक संकेत मिलते हैं। पिछले तीस साल से कहानियाँ और उपन्यासों के माध्यम से अपनी विशेष पहचान बना चुके असग़र वजाहत ने ‘कैसी आगी लगाई’ में विविधताओं से भरा एक जीवन हमारे सामने रखा है। यह जीवन बिना किसी शर्त पाठक के सामने खुलता चला जाता है। कहीं-कहीं बहुत संवेदनशील और वर्जित माने जानेवाले क्षेत्रों में उपन्यासकार पाठक को बड़ी कलात्मकता और सतर्कता से ले जाता है और कुछ ऐसे प्रसंग सामने आते हैं जो सम्भवतः हिन्दी उपन्यास में इससे पहले नहीं आए हैं। उपन्यास का ढाँचा परम्परागत है लेकिन दर्शक के सामने विभिन्न प्रसंग जिस तरह खुलते हैं, वह अत्यन्त कलात्मक है, एक व्यापक जीवन में लेखक जिस प्रसंग को उठाता है, उसे जीवन्त बना देता है। ‘कैसी आगी लगाई’ में साम्प्रदायिकता, छात्र-जीवन, स्वातंत्र्योत्तर राजनीति, सामन्तवाद, वामपन्थी राजनीति, मुस्लिम समाज, छोटे शहरों का जीवन और महानगर की आपाधापी के साथ-साथ सामाजिक अन्तर्विरोधों से जन्मा वैचारिक संघर्ष भी हमारे सामने आता है। उपन्यास मानवीय सरोकारों और मानवीय गरिमा के कई पक्षों को उद्घाटित करता है। जीवन और जगत के विभिन्न कार्य-व्यापारों के बीच कथा-सूत्र एक ऐसा रोचक ताना-बाना बुनते हैं कि पाठक उनमें डूबता चला जाता है। ‘कैसी आगी लगाई’ उन पाठकों के लिए आवश्यक है जो उपन्यास विधा से अतिरिक्त आशाएँ रखते हैं।
