He started by dropping off his widowed mother at her family's home, initially at Elanhippoyil, then heading to Bombay- a solitary voyage into the vast, bewildering world, as SKP describes. This haunting autobiographical novel spans about 60 years of history, reflecting on themes of memory, nostalgia, hardship, dreams, and numbness. It concludes with a monologue: "Forgive me, the representative of the new generation of Athiranippadam, forgive me for trespassing into your land, and consider me merely an antique collector, a non-native!"

वह सच है जाति जो हर तरह की सामाजिक-आर्थिक प्रगति को ठेंगा दिखाती हुई हमारे समाज में आज भी जहाँ की तहाँ बनी हुई है। तीन पीढ़ियों के दुःख-दर्द और बदलाव के संघर्षों से रचा हुआ यह पूरा उपन्यास अपने आप में एक तीखा सवाल है जिसे जाति के यथार्थ से आँख मिलाते हुए पूछा गया है। यह उपन्यास पूछता है कि भारत के लोग आज भी एक समान नागरिकता बोध और व्यवहार के अभ्यस्त क्यों नहीं हो पाए हैं; कि आज़ादी के इतने वर्षों बाद भी समाज के एक बड़े हिस्से को अपने जन्म, विवाह एवं मृत्यु संस्कारों और उत्सवों को अपने ढंग से मनाने का अधिकार क्यों नहीं मिला; कि यह कैसी व्यवस्था है जिसमें सार्वजनिक सड़क को भी कुछ लोग अपनी निजी सम्पत्ति समझते हैं और चाहते हैं कि कौन उस पर चलेगा, कौन नहीं ये भी वे तय करें? और सबसे बड़ा यह सवाल कि एक लोकतान्त्रिक राष्ट्र की सरकारें भी क्यों जाति की इस लक्ष्मण रेखा को नहीं लाँघ पातीं? ऐसे तमाम सवालों से उपन्यास के पात्र टकराते हैं। बदलाव की बेचैनी हो या बराबरी के सपने, वे यहाँ एक सुलगती हुई आँच में धीरे-धीरे पकते हैं और सघन सामूहिकता के साथ दर्ज होते हैं। हमारे समय और समाज को समझने के लिए एक ज़रूरी उपन्यास.
