- Description: आधुनिक सन्दर्भ में मानव-चरित्र के आभ्यन्तर जगत के गहन रहस्यों के उद्घाटन के साथ ही यह उपन्यास भारत के स्वाधीनता आन्दोलन में स्वदेशी के उभार तथा उस काल में राष्ट्रवाद की उभरती प्रवृत्ति का विशेष रूप से बेलाग विश्लेषण करता है। वह काल, पहले से चली आती लीक से हटकर अपने सृजन की व्याकुलता लिये हुए था, जिसमें स्त्री और पुरुष, दोनों ही अन्तर्बाह्य जीवन-व्यवहार से जुड़े प्रश्नों के उत्तर खोजना चाहते थे, लेकिन उनके सामने कोई स्पष्ट मार्ग नहीं था। इस विवशता ने उपन्यास को आद्यन्त तनाव से भरे रखा है। दूसरी ओर रवीन्द्रनाथ स्वयं बहुत कठोर यथार्थ की जमीन पर खड़े होकर स्वाधीनता आन्दोलन को देख रहे थे। उन्हें स्वदेशी और राष्ट्रवाद के सम्बन्ध में अपने स्वतंत्र दृष्टिकोण के लिए जाना जाता है, जिसके लिए वे अन्ध राष्ट्रवादियों की आलोचना का शिकार होते रहे हैं। ‘घर-बाहर’ इन दोनों ही सन्दर्भों में उनके चिन्तन व तर्कों को प्रस्तुत करता है।
