Maaya – A tryst with self, is the story Maaya, who, through her love for a man, Rahul, took on an incredible journey within, where she understood and experienced love in its purest, truest form. मनु शर्मा के तीन उपन्यासों की कड़ी में यह पहला उपन्यास है। ‘घरौंदा’ का कालखंड लगभग 1930 से आरंभ होता है। कथा एक पाँच-छह वर्ष के बालक का पीछा करती है। इस उपन्यास में एक गरीब परिवार कड़कड़ाते जाड़े को कैसे भोगता है, टूटी चारपाई और फटी गुदड़ी केनीचे पड़े एक खाँसते-कूँखते व्यक्ति का उसके इकलौते बालक पर क्या प्रभाव पड़ता है, दिल को छूनेवाला इसका वृत्तांत उपन्यास में है। घरौंदे बनाने और मिटाने वाले बालक जग्गू को क्या मालूम कि उसके सामने एक घरौंदा टूट रहा है। जग्गू इस उपन्यास का नायक है, जो आगे चलकर काल की ठोकरें खाता हुआ ‘जयनाथ’ बन जाता है। वह जीवन के अनेक परिवर्तनों के साथ समाज के बदलते परिवेश का भी साक्षी बनता है—आजाद भारत का सपना, अंग्रेजों का अत्याचारी कुशासन और सांप्रदायिक दंगे। जग्गू के शैशव का प्रतीक यह ‘घरौंदा’ बाल सुलभ जिज्ञासाओं, कुतूहल और एक माँ के लाचारी मन को गहरे तक उद्वेलित करता है। तो क्या यह ऐतिहासिक उपन्यास है? नहीं। ऐतिहासिक उपन्यास में घटनाएँ और चरित्रों के केवल नाम सच होते हैं, बाकि सब काल्पनिक। उसमें कल्पना से परिवेष्ठित सच होता है, इसमें सत्य से परिवेष्ठित कल्पना। तो यह ग्रंथ इतिहास भी है और उपन्यास भी। काव्य के विविध उपाख्यानों के साथ आधी शताब्दी का महाख्यान है—‘घरौंदा’।

भरे राजदरबार में द्रौपदी ने कुरुवंश के अनेक बड़े-बुजुर्गों और दुर्योधन से सवाल पूछा था, ‘‘मेरे पति पहले मुझे हारे थे कि अपने आपको?’’ तब उसका अपमान किया गया था। उसी द्रौपदी ने वर्षों तक निरंतर बिना कोई प्रश्न पूछे पाँच पतियों की सेवा की थी, इस बारे में कहीं किसी ने कोई उल्लेख तक नहीं किया है। समाज की यह संपूर्ण व्यवस्था स्त्री-विरोधी क्यों है? स्त्री का स्वभाव एक ही पुरुष के साथ बँधकर रहना और सुरक्षा की अपेक्षा करना है, परंतु वह सहन कर सके, उससे अधिक अत्याचार अगर उस पर किए जाएँ तो उसमें से जागा विद्रोह सर्वनाश करता है। स्त्री का विद्रोह समाज को बदलता है, बदलने के लिए मजबूर करता है। जिस प्रकार बीज को उगाने के लिए धरती में दबाना पड़ता है, उसी प्रकार दबाई हुई, कुचली हुई स्त्री जमीन फोड़कर अंकुर की तरह फूटती है, विकसित होती है और विशालकाय वृक्ष बन जाती है, जबकि पुरुष मिट्टी की तरह वहीं-का-वहीं रह जाता है। प्रस्तुत पुस्तक में द्रौपदी के रूप में स्त्रियों की पीड़ा, उनकी मनोव्यथा, उनके सुख अथवा उनकी समझदारी की कथा उनकी जुबानी ही लिखी गई है। पर यह ‘द्रौपदी’ वर्तमान की है, ‘आज’ की है। अभी भी जी रही है—शायद हर स्त्री में! स्त्री-विषयक समस्याओं, विसंगतियों एवं विद्रूपताओं को विश्लेषित करती एक पठनीय कृति।

Prema Jayakumar provides the English translation of S.K. Pottekkar's acclaimed Malayalam novel, ' Oru Deshanthinte Katha, ' published by Sahitya Akademi in 2015. The narrative centres on Sreedharan, a boy from Athiranippadam, portraying villagers' lives through the perspectives of the narrator and other characters. Set during British India, the story begins with Sreedharan's return to his hometown after more than 40 years. He is dropped near a petrol overhead tank on the site of his teenage love's house. He recounts the lives of the residents of Athiranippadam. The novel is segmented into five parts: childhood, early youth, teenage years, and a final section called "marmarangal." It features a story told by Velu Mooper, who witnesses events after Sreedharan's father's death, following his extensive travels to North India, Africa, and Europe. Throughout the story, he encounters individuals who leave lasting impressions from different stages of life, including Emma from Switzerland, a Bengali Babu, his half-brothers Kunhappu and Gopalettan (who caused him suffering by contracting syphilis), the mother goddess psyche of a Tamil Brahmin woman, with whom he longs, a girl who loved him unrequitedly before dying of tuberculosis, pranks with the " Supper Circuit Set, " lost loves, profound loneliness, his father's legendary life, and his journeys across continents. He started by dropping off his widowed mother at her family's home, initially at Elanhippoyil, then heading to Bombay- a solitary voyage into the vast, bewildering world, as SKP describes. This haunting autobiographical novel spans about 60 years of history, reflecting on themes of memory, nostalgia, hardship, dreams, and numbness. It concludes with a monologue: "Forgive me, the representative of the new generation of Athiranippadam, forgive me for trespassing into your land, and consider me merely an antique collector, a non-native!"

जब रवीन्द्रनाथ उपन्यासों में अपने काल के समाज को सँजो रहे थे, तब स्त्री अपने व्यक्तित्व के प्रति सजग होना प्रारम्भ ही हुई थी। ‘चोखेर बालि’ को पढ़ने से इस बात की पुष्टि हो जाएगी। 

‘रामो का भतीजा’ को अधिकांश विद्वान दिदेरो की सर्वाधिक महत्त्वपूर्ण साहित्यिक रचना मानते हैं। यह दार्शनिक और नीतिशास्त्रीय होने के साथ ही एक सौन्दर्यशास्त्रीय कृति भी है जो अपने समय के तमाम नैतिक-वैधिक-सामाजिक-सौन्दर्यशास्त्रीय मूल्यों पर, प्रस्तरीकृत रूढ़ियों पर अनूठे कोण और मारक ढंग से सवाल उठाती है, जिरह करती है और बिना फ़ैसला सुनाए दो अवस्थितियों के दोनों पक्षों पर सोचने और सापेक्षत: सही-ग़लत की शिनाख़्त करने के लिए पाठक को तर्क एवं दृष्टि देकर खुला छोड़ देती है। इसीलिए इसे द्वन्द्ववाद की अनुपम कृति भी माना जाता। ‘रामो का भतीजा’ में स्वयं दिदेरो और रामो का भतीजा—दो ही मुख्य पात्र सामने हैं जिनके बीच एक लम्बे संवाद के रूप में रचना अन्त तक की यात्रा पूरी करती है। रामो का भतीजा भी तत्कालीन पेरिस का एक वास्तविक चरित्र है। प्रसिद्ध फ़्रांसीसी संगीत-रचनाकार रामो उसका चाचा है। (भतीजा) रामो एक ग़रीब संगीतकार है जो पेरिस के बोहेमियाई जीवन का एक प्रतिनिधि है—पूरी तरह से अनैतिक, बिना किसी उसूल का, मानवद्वेषी चरित्र, जो घूसखोर, धनलोलुप, प्रतिक्रियावादी पत्रकारों का मित्र है और एक ऐसा परजीवी जो धनी अभिजातों के घरों में घुसने की जुगत भिड़ाने में दक्ष है। रामो समाज के नैतिक मानदंडों को ख़ारिज करता है। वह उन्हें एक ऐसी ताक़त मानता है जो उसके लिए बेगानी है, उसके ख़िलाफ़ है और इसलिए बुरी है। अपनी कामनाओं-वासनाओं-आवश्यकताओं की पूर्ति—जीवन में बस इसी एक चीज़ को वह मूल्य के तौर पर स्वीकार करता है। लेकिन रचना का कौशल यह है कि अपने अनैतिक व्यवहार और मानवद्वेषी अभिव्यक्तियों के ज़रिए रामो अपने आसपास की दुनिया को बेनकाब करता जाता है। वह समाज के पाखंडों के मुखौटों को नोच देता है और उसके सारतत्त्व को सामने ला देता है। वह दार्शनिक (जिसका प्रतिनिधित्व संवाद में दिदेरो करता है) के आदर्शों की निर्जीविता और अमूर्तता को भी उजागर करता है। वह स्पष्टत: देख रहा है कि धन समाज की मुख्य शक्ति बनता जा रहा है, लेकिन दूसरी ओर ग़रीबी भी मौजूद है। इस स्थिति में किसी भी तरह की स्वतंत्रता का बोध भ्रामक है। हर व्यक्ति भाँति-भाँति की मुद्राएँ-मुखौटे ओढ़े हुए है और कोई भी अपने प्रति सच्चा और ईमानदार नहीं है।
